Anglo American Platinum's social license to operate depends on its SLP, which addresses human resource development, employment equity, procurement and community development. Here is an update of our progress on the current SLP, which runs from 2016-2020, as at the end of 2017. TRANSFORMING OUR WORKFORCE It is important to ensure that Mogalakwena Complex has a diverse workforce that reflects South Africa’s rainbow nation. The Mining Charter sets out clear guidelines for broad-based black economic empowerment (BBBEE), which Platinum strives to achieve at each of its operations.

ast year, Mogalakwena Complex exceeded the targets for BBBEE in the middle management category. We also exceeded the target for the number of people trained by 382 people in 2017. However, there is work to be done in ensuring that LMogalakwena Complex recruits the right people with the necessary skills, experience and compentence to meet EE objectives. Here are some of the human resource development (HRD) programmes we have initiated to start closing the gaps:

SENIOR MANAGEMENT The Programme for Management Excellence, Senior Leadership Programme, Advanced Management Programme and Executive Development Programme all aim to develop senior leaders and improve their capabilities.

JUNIOR MANAGEMENT The Junior Management Programme (JUMP), the Achiever Programme (TAP) and the Situational Leadership Programme target employees on a supervisory level (including graduates). To close the gap between junior and senior management in the Processing division, the mine has implemented the Shift Leader Development Programme as well as the Processor Supervisors Development Programme.

CORE SKILLS Mogalakwena Complex’s Operator Academy creates core skills by training local community members to operate trackless mobile machinery (TMM). The mine also has various learnerships, open to employees and community members, and identifies people to be trained as artisans. Mogalakwena Complex employees and community members in the core skills category can apply for internal bursaries (see page 8 for information). Internships are also available to community members with tertiary qualifications who would like to gain work experience.
