ur new Mission statement directs us ‘to recognize and grow leaders in the dental profession, their communities and society.’ Service is implied by vir- tue of the fact that leaders serve. Our Board of Trustees strongly endorses Othe principle of service as one of the Academy’s major functions. It is our “raison d’être” and all of us were chosen to be Fellows because we have gone above and beyond what would normally be expected, given of ourselves, and been an example for others to fol- low. We are also Fellows because we honor our calling and the way in raising the standards of our profession. Our Academy goals direct us to develop service-oriented projects to ‘encourage im- provement of the oral health of the public through prevention, therapy, and restoration,’ and to ‘encourage fellowship among our membership and emphasize understanding of our professional responsibility to the public.’ Dr. Karyn L.
