HENKEL ART.AWARD. 09 retrospective 02-09 PREFACE

The Henkel Art.Award. emanates from the philosophy that Henkel Central Eastern Europe (CEE) has committed itself to for more than 20 years, starting at the point in time when the company in launched its expansion drive to Eastern Europe. From the very beginning, the focus of our thinking and corporate behavior was on establishing a cooperative interaction with the people in these countries, who we considered and still consider to be our partners – cooperation in the sense that we were ready to learn and to incorporate the lessons learned from our experiences when moving ahead. This means that we take the people and their needs very seriously, whether as our employ- ees or as our customers, and we are continually striving to optimize our business activities.

CONTENTS Art and culture have become distinguishing features, building blocks and facets of society, all of which first make life worth living – of course, based on the people’s ability to meet their basic material needs. Moreover, art and culture are important components of national identity.

Editorial KulturKontakt Austria 04 | 05 In the Central and Eastern European region, our attention was called to the enormous pool of young, up and coming, ambitious artistic talent. This, in turn, gave us the idea to offer these creative minds a platform and opportunity to present their know-how to a large Editorial Museum of Modern Art Stiftung Ludwig Vienna (MUMOK) 06 | 07 audience beyond the boundaries of their native countries. Finally, in 2002, Henkel CEE launched the Henkel Art.Award. In the meantime, it is open for participation by artists in 31 countries. In addition to the monetary prize and an exhibition in his or her homeland, the winner Winners, nominees and jury 08 | 09 gets a presentation in the Museum of Modern Art Stiftung Ludwig Vienna (MUMOK) the following year. From our point of view, the whole project is to be considered as a jump start to promote the career development of the artists. This approach has been successful, as Winners of the Henkel Art.Award. 10 | 25 Dan Perjovschi, our first award winner from Romania, has convincingly proven. In the meantime, his works have been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and this year his participation in the Biennale gained extensive international recognition. When we met Sabine Schauer from Henkel for the first time in January 2002 to discuss the possibility of establishing an art award The Henkel Art.Award. initiated by the headquarters of Henkel Central Eastern Europe in Vienna was accepted and supported for fine artists from Eastern and South Eastern Europe, there was no way of foreseeing that a long-term project would arise. by the subsidiaries in the region, which responded with a great deal of commitment, dedication und great ideas. This applies for the local juries in the respective countries as well as the events and exhibitions organized on behalf of the artists selected to Since 1992, KulturKontakt Austria has organized an Artists-in-Residence-Program, open for participation by artists in represent their homelands. Ultimately, Austrian artists were also invited to participate in the Young Austrian Artist’s Prize, 19 countries of Eastern and South Eastern Europe as well as in the South Caucasus countries. granted in 2006 for the first time.

For many of the artists, their stay in Vienna has served as a springboard for an international career. The experience For KulturKontakt, this joint initiative with Henkel has become an example of a fruitful and successful cooperation between culture gained in this program, as well as the resulting contacts and network, were the basis for the decision on the part of and business. It has also emerged as a project which goes far beyond a simple marketing tool. It passionately promotes the local Henkel Central Eastern Europe to select our organization as a partner for the newly-created art prize. art scene throughout Eastern and Southeastern Europe and honors artists not only with monetary prizes, but with considerable publicity and appreciation. The Henkel Art.Award. is a wonderful example of a cultural initiative that never rests on its laurels, but is continually changing and developing. The original focus on drawing was expanded to including photography and experimental Annemarie Türk design – nowadays the competition is open to visual arts in its whole spectrum. Moreover, the number of countries in KulturKontakt Austria, Head of Culture + Sponsoring which artists are invited to compete for the coveted prize has continually grown, from 15 to 31 at present. The Henkel Art.Award., which in the meantime has now entered the eighth year of its existence, has become an For MUMOK, the logical step was to link its own intentions with the strategy pursued by Henkel, and thus to assume the role of being a important source of inspiration and an impetus to promote young artistic talents in Central and Eastern Europe. This host. Accordingly, the gala award ceremony honoring the winners of the Henkel Art.Award. is being held in the former Imperial Stables commitment fits seamlessly into the traditionally anchored and characteristic feature of the MUMOK. In addition to focus- (Hofstallungen) of MUMOK. In addition, in 2010 an exhibition of the winner’s works of art will take place in the MUMOK Factory, the exhibition ing on contemporary international art, there has always been a specific orientation of the museum’s collection and space dedicated to young art, which will certainly help to promote the career of the young artist. For Henkel’s art prize, the cooperation exhibitions to the art generated by neighboring countries. with a public institution opens up a new and up until now unknown opportunity to promote art, which goes far beyond the monetary prize. I look forward to this cooperation, which represents an innovative example of a partnership between a museum and the private sector. This is due to Austria’s geopolitical location and the country’s history, which is closely linked to that of the so-called “East”. The museum’s explicit function as an intermediary among countries, artists and their audiences complements Edelbert Köb, the intentions of the Henkel Art.Award. DAS-GLEICHANDERE-INSTALLATIONSANSICHT-2 JURY STATEMENTS 2009 Barnabás Bencsik Director of the Ludwig Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art, Budapest, Hungary

The Henkel Art.Award. has become one of the most important awards in this region during the last eight years, for which more than 830 53 applications were submitted this year, from Georgia and Bosnia-Herzegovina to the Baltic States. Hence, the national and international juries faced a hard decision to select the artists who – apart from the financial aspect of the prize - have the unique opportunity to exhibit their works of art in one of the most prestigious museums in this region, namely the MUMOK in Vienna. For me, as a member of the jury, Jerica Ziherl it was very interesting and inspiring to see how many of them have critically reflected on the changed and constantly changing social Manager of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Rijeka, Croatia ambience in the countries in which we live.

The existence, organization, realization and development of the Henkel Art.Award. combine to create a unique plat- form for the (young) artists’ creativity and innovativeness. It is not only the monetary reward which is in the focus of Zoran Petrovski the Henkel Art.Award. There are many other benefits of this kind of philanthropy for young artists: advancement of the Head of the Film, Photography and Video Department and Senior Curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Skopje, Macedonia artists’ status in a professional and wider audience, recognizability and visibility of their projects, gaining additional experience and the transfer of knowledge and education to enable them to identify their future professional orientation. Reviewing and selecting several hundred artists’ portfolios for three diverse awards in just two days was pretty demanding, but also a rewarding job. Firstly, because it was a good chance to peek briefly into the current variety of artistic interests and approaches between What attracted my attention this year was that artists in 31 countries from Central Eastern Europe and Central Asia the Alps and Ural, the Baltics and the Bosporus. Secondly, because it was an exciting challenge to make the selection and to come to were invited to compete. Who or what made this possible? Is it the new geopolitical constellation – the spirit of the best possible decisions among a number of good portfolios. In this sense, the jury worked with an amazing harmony, and I enjoyed philosophy – the spirit of globalization? Or is the populism of pragmatic European policy ready to listen to the voices all the remarks, comments, doubts and convictions shared among the members of the jury in order to make good decisions. I believe of a creative and intellectual elite from small neighboring nations? It seems that Henkel CEE with KulturKontakt Austria that the range and quality of the competition as well as its persistence is transforming the Henkel Art.Award. into one of the very few and MUMOK are pioneers of cultural policy on behalf of and in Central Eastern Europe and Central Asia. prestigious and influential European art awards.
