EVENING MEETING Many of the Clansmen gathered in the Lobby of the Hotel befo re the Buffet Supper and the Pipers appeared in their Kilts and mingled with the crowd, meeting old friends and makin g new ones, before enter ing the Burg undy Room. Eac h table was numbere d with a hostess assigned. T hese gracious young ladies helped the guests and later served the plates from the buffet tabl e. All guests wer e as signed to tables as reservat ions were made. T his made a very pleasant arra ngemen t. Aft er the guests were seated, the pipes sounded and there were Pi pers Gar r ioch and Galloway followed by two, waiters; one very sedately ca rrying the Haggis, the other, with an amused look (fearful that it might be upset, being held YEAR B OOK AMERICAN C LA N G REGOR S OCIETY 17 high over his head ) carrying the Tradit ional Scotch. T hey paraded down center and around the room a fter which the Ha ggis and Scotch wer e served the waiting Clan smen. The evening session was called to order by the Chieftain, Douglas N eil Magruder, at 8 :55, at which time the group joined in singing "L och Lomo nd". The names of the Abse ntee Pa trons ami greetings fro m La uch Magruder , H er bert Thomas Ma gruder, and Guy Russell H enderson were read . The Chieftain made his annual address which was most inspiri ng and will be published in full in the Yea r Book. As usual when Commodore J ohn H olmes Magruder int roduced the Guest Speaker we were treated to a taste of his keen sense of humor. Then in all seriousness he told us a littl e of the background of Mr. N.\V. H . Gaydo n, First Secretary of the Br itish E mbassy in Washington. Mr. Gaydon has been in Foreign Ser vice since 1942. He was Foreign Office Spoke sman in Londo n fro m 1945 to 1947, and attended the Council of Fo reign Ministers in Paris. Moscow. London, and New York in 1947-48. He had work ed with and has heard Messr s. Byrnes, Bevin, Molotov and General Mar shall speak at these conferences. Sin ce 1948 he has been In form at ion Officer at the British Em bassy. He is married to a Welch girl and has three sons. Mr. Gayden's address was timely and most inte resting. Mrs. Fra nces Griffin Villaret, an accomp lished concert pianist, rendere d several groups of selections for th e piano. In one group she substituted for the vocali st who was unable to be present. It is indeed a tr eat to hear Mrs. Villaret perform. Surprise next came forth in the person of Mr. John Alaster McGregor of Sta fford , Vir ginia, who was brought to the Gath erin g by his son Charles. A l though one of the early members, Mr. McGr egor had not attended a meeting for some time. Th e group enjoyed heari ng him reminisce. H e is a real old timer and stirred the Clansmen with his rendition of a song he had written especially for the Clan, called "At Th e Close of Da y". This he said was written for the mem bers who were on the Shady Side of Life. Mr. William Young, Secreta ry of The St. Andrews Society, was presented and asked to brin g us greeti ngs. The Chieftain , going out of office this year, thank ed all officers serving with him for their cooperation and help. Th e incoming Chief tain was called to the platform and presented with the Medallion given by the Society to each Chieftain. Commodore John H olmes Magruder accepted it with a few well chose n word s. Th e new Rankin g Deputy Chieftain. Gener al Marsha ll Magruder, was called on for a short talk. At the completion of the church service we were taken to the Parish Hall where two motion pictur es were shown. The first one was "The Press Rehear sal of the Telephone Hour", featuring Don Vohees Orchestra with guest soloists E zia Pin za and Blanch T hebault. The second picture was a Savings Bonds picture entitled "Power Behind the Nation" and told of the industries of our United States. Thi s picture was in color and very beautiful. W e were then invit ed to the basement where a delicious luncheon was served by the ladies of the Chur ch, Luncheon over, the group left for Great Fa lls on the Potomac River and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal where they were met by members of the Montgomer y " County Maryland H istorical Society at the Tavern and Lock Keepers House. Mr s. Frank Pe lham Stone, our Clanswoman and founder of the Hi storical Society, greeted the Clan group. Mr . T. REPORT OF THE REGIST RAR M RS. O. O. VAN DEN BERG

My CHIEFTAIN AND FELLOW CLANSMEN : Your Registrar has twenty-two new members to report since the year book for 1950 was issued. T his number is below that of the two previous years, which is disappointing. In 1948 there were fifty enro lled, and in 1949 there were th irty-five. Something must be done to gain new members and to induce those who do not pay their dues promptly to be more act ive in well-doing fo r "O ur Clan" . May I appeal to you, my clansmen, to join with Regina H ill and me in a concerted effort to increa se our membership. Let us each bri ng in a new member or induce a clansman who was once active (that is paid dues) to become eligible for a place in the directory and on our mailin g list. T his can be done by paying dues for the cur rent fiscal year and back dues for one year. If you will send me the name and address of one or more prospects whom you are reasonably sure are MacGregors or Magruder's, I shall be glad to make the contact. Also, please send your own name and permanent add ress. As your Registrar, serving you for more than twenty years, I have experienced a great deal of pleasur e in my work and in the contac ts which that work has made for me. My files hold many interesting letters. Most of these I have answered, and when deemed of genealogical value, I have made carbon copies of these answer s. May I have your active co-opera tion and support in incr easing the membership of "Our Clan" ?

ADDRESS OF THE CHIEFTAIN D OUGLAS NEIL MAGRUDER

My C LANSMEN A ND DISTI NGUI S H ED G UESTS: It seems only a few weeks ago since last we met, yet I am reminded that a full year has passed and again I welcome you to the Annual Gathering of Clan Gregor. The three years I have served as your Chiefta in shall alway s be a source of sweet memori es to me as other years roll by. The many kindnesses shown me ; the pleasant associat ions; th e fellowship, and the comrades hip of my Clansmen will remain with me so long as I may live. It is a long way from Mississippi to Washingto n. For many years I looked forward to attending one of th ese Gath erin gs. I was not prompted by idle cur iosity, I assur e you, but it was a sincere desir e on my par t to meet and to know my kins- Y EAR BOO K A MtRlCAN CLAN GkEOOR Socrers 27

men from the other parts of the country. I was not disa ppointed, nor was I surprised when I found you to he the same: kind of folks we Magruder' s are down in M ississipl'i, Loui siana. and other parts of the deep South. And so. from the very beginning, I have felt at hom e among you. I wish that every member, and every eligible member, 01 this Society cou ld have the oppor tunity of attending the se Gatherings. I am sure the y, 100, would want to return again and again. As you know, every society such as OUTS, in order to be successful, must have i Clan Gregor Society set out four excellent reason s : purposes to which we a re st ill an objective in view; a reason fur its existenc e. The Founders of the American dedicated a fter more t han forty years. Let me repeat them here : I. To gather kindred togeth er in Elan ship. 2. To induce cordiality among its members. J. To foster home ti...s. 4. To collect ami recor d genealogical and historical records. To these I would like to add a filth reason ; though not sct out in our By-Laws. it is implied never-the -less. And that is, to preserve the ideals, the intcgrity and the traditions of MacGregor. Unfortunately a great maj crity of our membership is unable to atte nd our Annua l Gatberings and are thus deprived 01 the pleasures and benefits o f our first two objectives. \Vh }", then, do they d ing to thei r membership ? J believe it is be cause of this filt h objective which I have ju st given. \Vhat are these ideals ? \\'hat are these traditions that are a very part of us ? I would not attempt to express them in word s but I would like to relat e a personal experience, which, to me, explains it far better than an}" vocabulary. There is a newspaper edito r in my home town who is an old time. straight laced Methodist- a nd I mean no reflection on the Religion. But I alwa ys felt that this man considered my father to be a wry evil person because he lik ed to play ca rds ; he liked to dance ; he even enjo yed his whisk ... y toddy when he carne h"me evenings fr om the office ; and he enjoyed takin g us kids swimming Oil Sunday a ffemoons. Some years after my fat her's death I was visiting m y sister when I met this man on the street. He greeted me with the observation tha t I reminded him more of my fat her every day, and I replied that I only hoped to be hall as good a man as I considered my father to be. And thm he said thi s : "You know Neil, your lather and I did not agree on many thin gs, but there was one thing I alway s admired in him. You could alwa ys put your finger on him." "You can always put your finger on him." Jl ow many men are there in your communit y : how many men are there in your acquaintance of whom it can be said without equivocat ion, "You can al ways put your finger on him" ? If we had more such men in our count ry today who said what the}" actua lly believed: ami who acted ac-c ording to tha t belief ; if there were more such men guiding the destinies of other great Nati ons of this world, then truly the strife and turmoil we are now experiencing would soon disappear. But God did not intend it that way. The re is evil, and there is good ; there is vanity. and there is meekness : there is greed, and there is humbleness; we have 28 YEAR BOOK AMERICAN CLAN GREGOR SOCIETY

our choice. Too often th e path to glory is a short cut studded with lies and deception ; double talk and chicanery. Th ose who travel this path would have us blinded by the brill iance of their own accomplishments, yet they know not the true meaning of F reedom because they are bound and shackled by the recotlections of their own misdeeds. True Freedom is found only in the hearts and minds and souls of people. True Liberty is enjoyed only by those who have no retr ospects. W e MacGregors prefer our Liberty. I like to believe, and I do believe, that every MacGr egor wants it to be said of himself, "You can always put your finger on him". So long as MacGregor strives for these objectives; so long as we live up to • these ideals and traditions, then so long will this Society live. Should we fail, those who fotlow us wilt hear no more of MacGregor. Th e responsibility is ours, today. Let us never, never forget it.

She was a member of the Methodist Church, the American Clan Gregor Society, the D. A. R., and the Medical Association as well as social org anizations. Her latch string was always on the outside. She never did things by halves but by her fath er' s motto "If a thin g is worth doing, it is worth doing well." AN UNFORGETTABLE SUMMER By FRANCES L. L UMMIS and B EVERLEY RANDOLPH W e began to make plans in September, seven whole month s before sailing time, seven months of travel folders, budget calcu lations and wardrobe worries. April fifteenth finally arrived and we set sail on the Alcoa Pi oneer , a freighter bound for Na ples, carryi ng five passengers includi ng ourselves and-we were to discover -{lne of the first shipments of military aid to It aly. T he latter made our landing unusual to say the least as the Communists plotted to blow up the ship. Fo rtunately this scheme was thwarted I Naples was war torn and beggar ridd en but there was color everyw here: lemons ripe on the tr ees, wisteria and red poppies in profusion and the blue-green Medite rranean-a contrast which almost seemed to be Italy in the spring of 1950. Nothing disappoint ed us in Rome except th e Tiber which, as Francie said, was a "flop". W e were Protestants in Rome in a H oly Yea r and experienced what were probably typical feelings : wonderment at th e resplendent and flamboyant wealth of the Roman Catholic Church, a certain amount of disappointm ent in the commer cialism and amazement at an emotional religious attitude quit e foreign to our experience. Bev had majored in Art Hi stor y at college so F lorence was a glorious continuation of "the grandeur that was Rome". While she wa ndered in a daze through the Pitti P alace, F rancie, the physicist, made a personal pilgrimage to see Galileo's telescope. W e gondolaed through th e exotic and mystic beauty of Venice, spent a few days in the Lak e region and our month in Italy was at an end. The highlight in Swit zerland was the trip from Interlaken up to the j ungfraujoch, a height of over eleven thousand feet. The rail way itself is an astoundin g feat of engineering and th e views are breath-taking. Francie's uncle and aunt , General and Mr s. Carter B. Magruder , wer e very anxious for us to have a boat trip through the Rhin e Gorge as they had found it fascinating when th ey were sta tioned in Ger many. \Ve spent a weekend in H eidel berg and early one morning drove to Mannheim where we boarded a small motor launch. The gorge with its ruined castles was at the same tim e spectacular and picturesque but equally as interesting was the life of the river itself : countless coal bar ges with the laundry swinging gaily above th e coal, bombed brid geheads and scenes of utt er devastat ion. We crossed from Ostend to Dover the day before the Kin g's official birthday so we were in Lond on for the ceremony of Trooping th e Colour and marveled at the pageantry and stared at the Royal Family. The weather was perfect, we could under stand what people said and we rej oiced at the prospect of using the same money for five whole weeks. We wer e fortunate in having many friends in London and in addition to the social and sightseeing pleasure they gave us, we gained some small insight into EU:A XOl( P . P ASSAXO 187\ - 1949 Y EAR B OOK AMERICAN CLAN G REGOR SOC IETY 4i the dull intricacy and monotony of their lives. Gas had only come off rat ion a few weeks befor e our arrival. El even years on that commodity alone I poignant and rath er awful about a ga p in a group of row- houses, but when one Th e extent of the bombed out ar eas in the old part of grea ter London is fantastic and difficult to compre hend even when one sees it. There is something sees blocks and blocks of what look like overgrown fields sur rounded by neat stone walls, it is incredible that there not long ago stood solid masses of buildings. As we headed north to Scotland, one weekend was spent with friends of Bev's in Suffolk, where the children of the house aske d us to "speak American"! W e attended services in York Minister, seated in old choir stalls whose extreme dis comfo rt made us envy the spiritual fortitude of the monks of old. Durham Cathedra l enchanted us and we went to the regatta there. Some of the participants invit ed us to tea and had quite a few acid comments to make about that Ame rican institution, the "nahsty" tea bag. Scotland ! Our first week was spent in Ed inburgh, fa r too short a time for that enchanting city. It took us three days to tr averse the Royal Mile from the Castle to Holyrood. We bought tartan cloth by the yard and F rancie even pur chased an umbrella in the MacG rego r tartan! W e went to Peebles for the weekend and [or the first time saw and danced "T he Gay Gordons" and "T he Das hing White Sergea nt". On our arrival in P erth our train was met by Mrs. E rnest Pendleton Magruder, a friend and cousin by mar riage of Mrs. van den Berg, who had kindly writte n her of our coming. Mrs. Magrud er, picnic baskets in hand, had plans for a most fascinatin g day. A friend of hers joined us for lunch and then all fou r of us dr ove to Blair Castle via Pitlochry and through the Pass of Killi ecrankie. It was thrilling to go through one of the "sta tely homes" with two ladies who had known the place when it was not open to the public and had so many persona l recollec tions of the people whose portraits hung on the walls. W e were particularly in tri gued with the collection of arms and the dozens of antlers which contras ted with exquisite china and delicate embroidery. I t was rai ning, quite a heavy "Scot tish mist", so we had our picnic tea in the car, our spirits not dampened in the least as Mrs. Magruder is perfectly delight ful with a spark ling sense of humor and a keen wit. Th at evening she telephoned her brother, Sir Malcolm Mac Grego r of MacGregor, Bt., C.B., e M.G., Re. R.N., with the result that we were invited to tea with him the following af ternoo n. Sir Malcolm sent a car to our hotel in Lochearnhead at three and we drove to "Edinchip", Un fort unately Lady MacGregor was in Glasgow so we did not have the pleasure of meeting her. But Sir Malcolm himself was a most charming host and to our delight greeted us at the door wearing his Rob Roy kilt. "Edin chip" is a relatively new stone house on a hill overlooking Loch Earn. T o one side is a for mal ga rden in which lupens were blooming magnificentl y. Beyond was an extensive informal ga rden of azalea and rhododendron in luxuri ant pro fu sion which we viewed by proceeding along a narrow, ' winding path single file, Rob Roy leading his forces among the crags with two west highland ter riers as outri ders! Th e house itself was filled with famil y tr easures, the most interesting of 48 Y EAR BOOK A M ERICAN CLAN G REGOR SOC IETY which Sir Malcolm graciously showed us as he knew of our interest in the Mac Gregor clan. One item in particular was a dirk given by Bonnie Prince Charlie to his aide, a MacGregor ancestor. W e had a delicious and abundant tea in the dining room and wer e genuinely sorry when the time came for our leave taki ng. Aft er visiting Glasgow, the Scott ish Lochs and the En glish lakes we went to the International Eisteddfod in Llangollen, W ales. W e were there for the folk music and dancing, for which the participants wore their nati ve costumes and were a riot of color and ryth ym , Our final expedition in the Bri tish Isles was to Stratford, to see one of Shakespeare's plays done in the proper setting. We crossed the channel for Bas tille Day in Pari s and, except for bri ef , week and excursions to Mont St. Michel and to Tours and the Chateaux of the Loire, nll our time in F rance was spent in that magic city. W e wandered first in one put of Paris, then in another, enchan ted with every street corner, with the magnificence of the architectural remains of so many periods of French glory, with the flower s and the kaleidoscopic crowds. It was July, the height of the tourist season and though we had small sympathy for those Americans who lived in the Ritz Bar, the crowds added a flavor of their own. Augus t first came all too soon. Bev sailed for home and F rancie returned to Scotland for the Hi ghland Games at Strathallen and a flying visit to Mallaig and Skye. The Queen Elizabeth provided for both a luxur ious ending to an un forgettable summer.

QUERY DEPARTME NT Conduc ted by R EGI N A MAGRUDER HILL, Historian In the process of preparation of the Genera tion Charts at Headquarters many questions have come up which we believe some of our members could asssit in answering, and in this way increase the ever growing fund of valuable inform ati on on file in the Headquarters Offi ce. It is therefore believed to be a good idea to have a Question Department in the Year Book where genealogical questions which come up at H eadquarters may be asked, and we hope answers obtained to them. It may also be that some member or prospective member will want informa tion on his Magruder line. H eadquarter s will be glad to do this research for which a small fee of $5 will be charged. Thi s money will go into the Pl annin g Fund to be used for resea rch work. In sending in questions please sta te the inform ation desired very clearly giving all the data you may have, with full names and the maiden name of wives, as in many cases the secret lies in the maiden name of the wife . NOT A PRETTY PICTURE SUSIE M AY G EDDES VAN DEN B ERG, Registrar In the May, 1950, issue of the Quarterl y Ne ws Bulletin of the Maryland Hi storical Society there is a picture showing the ravages of time, mice, silver fish and dampness on an old and valuable Diary lately acquired by the Society, and valuable in the genealogical data contained in its pages, now well-nigh unreadable. This might happen to priceless materia ls now stored in cellar or attic of old houses or otherwise impro perly cared for. Fire, too, may destroy your preciou s papers, for it is well known that Court H ouses, Churc hes and other depositaries of records have gone up in smoke carrying with it records which never again can be gathered together. Some such disaster, or neglect, may deprive future genera tions of in formation contained in YOUR papers. This appalling thought has prompted us to make an earnes t appeal to all mem bers of "Our Clan" who may have record s ; no matter how few or many, to make at least three copies of them, and send these copies to the H eadquarters Office of the American Clan Gregor Society. Th e original typed copy will be filed at Head quarters for research and reference purposes, and the two carbons will be sent along with other Clan mat erial of like matt er to several safe places where the Clan records are stored. You may wish to give the Clan your original copy of a will, deed, land grant, etc. In this case three copies of the original will be made and distributed as above mentioned and the original which you gave to the Clan will be stored with the other Clan mat erial. Look now among your family papers for W ills, Land Grants, Marriage Bonds, Diaries, Bible Record s, copies of Census and Church Record s, and lett ers of any date which may have in them genealogical items, or family history, and copy these verbatum, type them if possible. Please leave one full inch clear on each side of paper and one and a half at top and bott om. Also use only one side of each sheet of paper. W e are doing our best at H eadquarters to have typed the material now on hand which is being indexe d and bound in loose leaf binders. Stokes from Mr. Dick in Decem- ber, 1950: "I thought at this time of year you might be pleased not only to have my best wishes for 1951, but also a photograph of the Fifth great grandchild of Rob Roy McGr egor. It is one that was taken recently in my evening dress attire with of course the ancient McGregor kilt."

IMPORTANT MARYLAND RECORDS AT ANNAPOLIS Contributed by

G EORGE M AGRUDER B AITEY, III Readers of the Yea r Book are advised that certain record s they have believed were destroyed can be had at the Hall of Records and the La nd Office (in the same building), An napolis, Mar yland, especially wills and deeds relating to Calvert County, whose original records were mostly destroyed in a fire in 1882. Th e copies of these recor ds, or most of them, are still available. Many of the States requir e that copies of county record s be deposited with the Secreta ry of State at the Capitol. The reaso n the record s of Gloucester County, Virgi nia, exist only in fragment form is that the cour thouse at Gloucester was burned in 1820 and the copies at Richmond were not genera lly recopied, so when the State Capitol was burned in the Civil W ar , the destructi on was fairl y complete. Ho wever, Mrs. Polly Cary Ma son has very well managed to put the Gloucester record s together aga in, and in a foreword to her work, Dr. Ea rl G. Swem, author of Swem's Ind ex of Virginia Publicati ons, bids fac t seekers to get off the beaten highways and search in the Tid ewat er region, where, he agrees with Mr s. Mason, exists mountains of valuable data. For the concentrated county record s, though, the Land Office (Mrs. Nell Marion Nugent), the Capitol, Richmond, is the best source. On page 21, of the Yea r Book of the American Clan Grego r Society for 1923, Chieftain Edward May Magruder stated in his annual address : "A lexander Magruder died in 1677 and his will was probated Januar y 25, 1677 .. . Ther e is a copy of this will in its or iginal quaint wor ding and spelling in the Land Office in Ann apolis, Maryland, Liber V, Folio 269, which conta ins copies of all the wills of all counties of Mar yland. (c. C. M. j r., authori ty). In th is will he mentions wife Elizabeth." Th is cas ual mention of ava ilable records in a study of Alexander Magruder was not calculated to send many fact seekers speeding to Annapolis. Indeed, since 1923 we have read severa l times express ions to the effect that Calvert was a "near blackout" for information. By exa mple, this fro m the excellent article by Attorney Alexander H . Bell of Washingt on, D. c., which sta rts on page 91 of the Yea rbook for 1938, in his discussion of the Trumans, Dents, Magruders and their Maryland kin : "Unfo rtunately, due to the destruction of the Calvert County record s, there can not be any check-up on the indicated line of Magruder s ..... Th e American Clan Gregor Society is making an effort to avoid the possibility of its records being totally destroyed and has recently had copies of certain data made and their plan is to deposit these copies, the original Applicati on Blanks and a set of the Year Books in' several different places. In time all material of re cognized value will be so copied.

Thi s booklet is dedicat ed as fo llows: "IN MEMORY OF MARION MYRL HARRISON ( 1890-1946) whose diligent study and many years of pati ent research as the "Family Hi storian" of Archibald Magr uder's descendants in Kent ucky, made this little book possible." More than 375 familie s are included in this record, and 1100 children, all descendants of Alexander Magruder, through his great-g reat-grandson, Archibald. Besides the Magruder fam ilies in the male lines, are man y familie s in the fema le lines. Among these are Abell, Ash, Aud, Barrall, Barrickman, Barnes, Beard, Berry, Blackstock, Bradshaw, Bridgewater, Bridwell, Br own, Carp enter, Cassell, Cren shaw, Cri swell, Combs, Carroll, Chri stian , Deacon, Dent , Downs, Ewing, Fie ld, Fields, Funk, Gatte n, Garth, Goff, Grave s, Gering, Harris, Haga n, Hall, Haley, Hibbs, Hume, He nders on, Harrison, Hardesty, H oover, Jenkin s, Jones, Lutes, Lee, Lloyd, McCarty, McAfee, Maraman, Ma sden, Med ley, Meredith, Mathi s, Menakee, Miranda, Mor gan, Milam, Myers, -Nusz, Nutt, Overall , Parrish, Pa ge, Roby, Rouse, Riggs, Reynolds, Ripy, Rudd, Ridd le, Samue ls, Sales, Scott, Sherman, Sheriff , Shack elford, Spencer, Stark, Stovall, Troutman, Tinnell, Walker, Watkins, Weaver, We lls, Wh eeler, W inkler, Wi se, Wi lliamson, Yeiser, Zimmerman, and others. Most lines extend through the 9th, 10th and 11th generations; some are in the 12th, and a few are found only as far as the 7th and 8th generations, because the necessary inf ormation has not been available, or because by letters of inquir y not being replied to. Thi s is a valuable booklet for resea rchers. Congratulations to Mr. Barrickman on this splendid piece of work.

Th e History of the Cresaps, compiled by Rev. J oseph Ord Cresap and Bernarr Cresap. During a resear ch tr ip to Cumberland, Maryland, during my vacation time last summer I, as your Hi storian, collected some data on the Beall-M agruder fami ly of Cumberland, particularly on the descendan ts of Verlinda Magruder, daughte r of Samuel and Sarah, who married John Beall. Th e Postma ster at Cumberland put me in touch with Colonel F ra nk E. P owell, retired, from the Ea stern Shore of Maryland, who had married a descendant of thi s marriage. I have had some interesting corr espondence with him. Colonel Powell attended the Cresap Society, he being of that line, and he came to see us at Headquarters on his way home fr om Cumberland. In talking about the Society and the Clan he told us of this book on the Cresaps and said he would ask the auth ors to send us a copy for our Archives. We received the book and a very nice letter from Rev. Mr. Cresap. H e is also sending the Clan the Cresap Bulletin which is issued several times a year. The Genealogical section of this book is well arranged and easy to follow and is well indexed. On page 312 is the line of Mary Cresap who married John T. Singleton. Our Clansman, Mr s. Blanche Boyce Meyers, is a descendan t of this marri age. 62 YEAR BOOK AMERICAN CLA N GREGOR SOCIETY

Another descendant of Verlinda Magrud er and John Beall is Mr. William Wallace McKaig of Cumberland. Both Mr. McKaig and Colonel Powell have been asked to contribute an article on this Beall-Magruder line.

Book- River of No R eturn, A Historical S tory of Idaho, by Robert G. Bailey, Lewiston, Idaho. It is the story of the Salmon River country and is a most de lightful book. On page 124 starts a most interesting account of the Mu rder of Lloyd Magruder in October 1863. He was the son of Lloyd Magruder and Ann Holme s. There are many references to Th omas B. or J., Beall, a pioneer of Lewiston and his picture is given on severa l pages. He went to Lewiston in 1858 as a Scout with Col. Steptoe, and died there about 1925. H e has a son who is a successful farm er near Lewiston. W e would like to know more about Mr. Beall. .. Thi s book, which has been autog raphed by the Author, has been presented to the Clan by Miss Lucile Magrud er, our member from Moscow, Idaho, in memory of her father, J ohn Levi Magruder. A Memorial sketch to Mr. Magrud er will be found in another section of th is book.

Pictures- Owm M agrllder. Miss Gertrude Owen Pendl eton of P ilot Grove, Missouri, has given to the Clan two pictures of her great grandfa ther , Owen Magruder who was born in Oldham County, Missouri in 1804. He was the son of Aquilla Magruder, he being the son of Nathaniel son of Alexand er and his wife, Ann Wade.

W e are still desirous of obtaining this material. "A request is made by the Registr ar for photographs or cuts of homes (o ld family homes) owned, or at one time owned, by members of the Clan or their MacGregor-Ma gruder kin. Also it is requested that a sketch of the histor y of these places accompany the pictures of them, who built the house or purch ased the place and when ; name of the Home or Plantation, and wher e located, in fact any in formation or story connected with the propert y or family that would be of interest to Clansmen.
