Spring Musical “Tooned Out!”

On April 19th the grade 4 and 5 students performed the spring musical ‘Tooned Out’. This “Mr. LePage Original” gave us a view into the lives of cartoon characters as they were fired from their jobs and went out into the real world in search of “real jobs”. Congratulations to all the actors, choir members, and sound and light team for the hard work they put into bringing this to the stage. Mr. LePage and Mr. McPherson would also like to thank one of our retired teachers from Wayoata, Mrs. Nykoluk, for her hard work creating all the costumes.

A Day In The Life Of Kindergarten

On the evening of May 9th , we welcomed the new students who will be attending kindergarten in the fall. Our future kindergarten students were treated to an evening of fun filled activities and they experienced some of what a day in kindergarten brings. We look forward to seeing these students again in September.

Thank you to Ms. Johnson, Mrs. Grabau, Mr. Buck, Mrs. Bailey, Mrs. Cole, Mr. McPherson, Mrs. MacKinnon and Mrs. Falconer as well as several grade 4 and 5 student volunteers including Mason, Rayne, Abby, Gabby, Dany, Preslie, Kennadie, Teagan, Julia, Jensen, Julia G, Lauren, Katrina, and Morgan who helped to make the evening a success.

Wayoata Community Clean-Up

On Friday, May 4, 2018, our entire school participated in the Transcona Biz Community Clean Up. Each of our students and staff donned the bright orange shirts that the Transcona Biz provided and went out in the community to pick up garbage. Our students worked to clean the area between Wayoata and Day street and Regent and Kildare. The students worked with their reading buddies to clean up their designated area and drop off the garbage at Centennial Square. After their work, the students enjoyed a snack. As a thank you for their work, students were invited by the Transcona Biz to go with their families to the Centennial Square on that same evening and enjoy a hot dog for supper. It was a beautiful day and the students represented Wayoata well as they worked together to clean up the green spaces in our community.

Folk Dance Festival

On Wednesday, May 30th, the grade 1, 2, and 3 students will be travelling to McIvor Park for the divisional folk dance festival. We expect that there will be over 800 students from 12 different schools in our division. The students will perform line, partner, circle, and mass dances during the event. Songs that Wayoata will perform include “Kinderpolka”, “Alley Cat”, “Car Wash” and most kids' favorite, “Tarantella” (aka “The Pizza Song”). To end off the event, kids will dance along to additional fan favorite songs “The Chicken Dance”, “Macarena” and “YMCA”.

We hope that it will be an enjoyable, active day for everyone at Wayoata School!

Grade 5s Carpentry at Murdoch MacKay Collegiate

The grade 5 students had an opportunity to learn about carpentry at Murdoch MacKay Collegiate. Students learned about woodworking and shop safety during May 16th and 17th . Murdoch Teacher, Mr. Bell, and his grade 9 students helped students cut, drill, sand and hammer nails to create beautiful toolboxes. Students learned step by step procedures and worked together in an amazing field trip to Murdoch MacKay Collegiate. Every student took home a handcrafted toolbox. Wayoata students and staff would like to thank Mr. Bell for teaching our students valuable woodworking skills and for providing orange slices, iced tea and granola bars at snack time. Our students represented Wayoata well as they were safe, responsible and respectful.

Mr. Kowal and Mrs. Morin’s Classes Visit the Forks

We went on a field trip to the Forks! First we went on the bus and my partners were Jazlyn and Kyleigh. We got to the Forks and then there was a tour guide, but we had to split up into groups. Our tour guide took us to a metal teepee and we started to talk about the medicine wheel, all about the colours of the medicine wheel with beads and we had to double knot our bracelet. The bracelet was so pretty when it was all finished. We started to walk out of the teepee, to have a snack. When all of us were done eating we started to do something else. The tour guide gave us a big string, we had to tie it and then we shaped it into a canoe. We all held it and then we went inside of the canoe. We were all pretending that there was a storm of a flood and it was so fun too.

The next part of the trip was when we went on a tour. First we held a bison tooth. It was huge! We went to the bridge, we learned about where the first fort was made. We saw geese. We saw fossils in the rocks. We learned about floods. We played at the part and we got to hold pemmican. It was rolled up into little balls, we passed it around and when I got it I smelled the container. What a mistake! It smelled like dog food!

Leadership Celebrations

Throughout the year, we have had several leadership celebrations to celebrate the great job our leadership students do in fulfilling all of their leadership duties as they contribute to our school community. We have gone skating at East End Arena, visited Ecole Centrale for spelunking and trampolining and participated in special activities at the school. Our final celebration this year for our responsible leaders will be at Lilac Resort on June 12th. We hope for a beautiful day but whatever the weather, dress appropriately, pack a lunch and do not forget your sunscreen!

Thank you leaders for fulfilling your responsibilities throughout the year.

Your role as a leader makes Wayoata School a better place!

Wayoata Floor Hockey League

Over 80 grade 3, 4, and 5 students played on 8 different floor hockey teams competing against each other from January to March. Students played at morning and afternoon recesses and playoffs were played in March. The final two teams played in the gym in front of excited grade 3 to 5 classmates. All teams displayed sportsmanship and fair play. Mr.Behrens would like to thank Mrs. McKinnon and Mr. Kowal for floor hockey supervision and making this a successful floor hockey season. The season ended with the Staff vs. Students game. The Wayoata staff members easily defeated the students in a fun filled game before spring break. This was the fourth year of organized floor hockey at Wayoata.

We are looking forward to another exciting year in 2019!

Gymnastics

There were 42 students in grades 3, 4 and 5 who participated in our gymnastics club. These gymnasts were very dedicated to improving their skills. We met every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at lunch. At the end of a March we put on a display for our school and in the evening we participated in a divisional tumbling rally with 5 other schools. Congratulations to all gymnasts for their hard work and wonderful performances!

Flag Rugby!

Wayoata Flag Rugby Club is back for a third season. The club had 33 student participants for it’s first practice on May 7th. Many players have returned from last year and there are many new faces out who have come to play a version of the sport that is now featured in the Summer Olympics!

The first practice focused on making passing chains to work on the skills of the ‘pop’ pass and catching by having our hands out. Then there was ‘Dodge the Scarecrow’ to work on running and cutting with two hands on the ball. We finished up with ‘Ball Tag’ which combines the passing, catching, running cutting and promotes good communication amongst teammates!

Just as we did in previous years, the Wayoata Flag Rugby Club will depart to play in the Louis Riel School Division Flag Rugby Tournament on Tuesday June 26th with approximately 100 young flag rugby players from across Winnipeg. The all day tournament is an opportunity for our flag rugby players to play in real flag rugby games. It also serves as a great celebration to wrap up the club for another season. Mondays and Fridays at Lunch Recess are ‘Rugby Days’ at Wayoata School!

As the participants like to cheer, 3 – 2 – 1 Wayoata Rugby!!!

Banner Club

Have you ever noticed the beautiful banners hanging around Transcona? They look like professionals made them, don't they? Those "professionals" are the students from our very own Transcona Schools. Wayoata School had their own banner club during the weeks just before and after spring break. The theme this year was "The Parks of Park City." We thought about our favourite parks and things that we enjoy doing at them. We talked about focusing on one activity or aspect of the park. Everyone eagerly met for half an hour each day. There were so many excited artists that the space was bursting at the seams! They all took the time and care to do their very best work and were all worthy of a banner. We are very proud that 8 of our members have been chosen to paint their pictures on banners, and one of those was chosen as a winner in his age category! They were Max, Wolfgang (who also won second overall for his age category), Mya, Sarah, Christian, Ava, Ava, and Isabelle. Next week, these students will be off to Murdoch MacKay Collegiate to bring their art to life. Thank you to all the teachers who helped make this project a success. Keep your eyes open this summer to see the beautiful work of our amazing artists.

The Career Trek Program

Career Trek is a twenty-week career exploration trial that runs every Saturday from October to April. The students participate in four classes exploring four different careers each Saturday. They visited at three different campuses for five week blocks. The campuses were , University of Winnipeg, and Red River College (including Stevenson Campus – Aviation and Aerospace).

On May 13th, students from the Career Trek World of Work program donned a cap and gown and walked across the stage at the Manitoba Theatre for Young People to receive their graduation certificates.

Congratulations to Kennadie in grade 5 who worked hard every Saturday, completed the Career Trek program and graduated along with the other Career Trek students from across the city.

Education for Sustainability

As we reach the end of another school year, it has been our goal as the ESD committee to guide and educate students so they will become informed and responsible decision makers, playing active roles as citizens of Wayoata School, and the world, and will contribute to social, environmental and economic well-being and an equitable quality of life for all, now and in the future.

We have continued to track our weekly litterless snack data with the goal that 80% of the school population will actively participate on a weekly basis. Implementing compost pails in the classrooms has enabled the students to make conscious decisions when deciding what to do with their garbage. With the warm weather here, we are now able to build an additional outdoor compost bin.

We continue to enjoy our sustainable playground. We received an ESD grant to support our work. The committee has purchased clipboards, pencils, field guides, magnifying glasses, digging and planting supplies that can be used when taking teaching and learning outdoors. Be sure to see the pictures on the next page of students engaged in learning about the outdoors. In addition to these items, we have purchased more outdoor toys and tools to extend our creative play during recess.

We are also excited about our recently updated recycling centre that allows us to continue to collect drink tabs, toiletries, eyeglasses, ink cartridges and batteries. Please note that plastic bags are only collected at the school during BAG IT UP in the fall. Please continue to recycle these bags and deposit them at locations that have collection depots like the Safeway on Kildare.

By the end of the school year, Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Giesbrecht and Ms. Phillips will have taken their classes to the Human Rights Museum to take part in the My Rights, Our Rights, child friendly version of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, where students discover their rights and learn to respect each other’s rights.

We recently had a popcorn sale to raise funds for our sister school, Nsambwe primary School, in Uganda. There was not a set cost for popcorn, instead we ask for a small donation in any amount. We raised $299.85!

We have the right to food, clean water and education but we as a school, have learned that other children lack these basic rights.

Report Cards

Third term report cards will be released and posted to the RETSD Parent Portal on June 29th. Follow this link www.way.retsd.mb.ca and choose Parent Portal at the top of the home page. If you are logging in using your mobile device, the Parent Portal link can be found by scrolling to the bottom of the home page, opening the ‘utility links’ box and selecting Parent Portal.

At this time, we would like to take this opportunity to remind families that a new divisional procedure is in place regarding student report cards. Student report cards are now made available on the RETSD Parent Portal and paper copies will not be sent home with students. Across the school division, all early years schools will be posting student report cards on the Parent Portal. The Parent Portal was introduced to families in the fall of 2017. At that time, families received an envelope inside their child’s report card envelope which included important information regarding the Parent Portal. This envelope contained two letters printed on blue paper – one letter introduced the new RETSD Parent Portal and the other letter provided account credentials including a user name and password. Families with more than one child at Wayoata School would have received a different password for each child.

Thank You For Helping Reduce The Allergy Risk

We would like to thank you for your help in reducing the risks at school for our students who have life-threatening food allergies. Your support of our request to refrain from sending nuts, or products containing them, is greatly appreciated. We realize this may have posed some inconvenience for you when preparing lunches and snacks for your child. Eliminating the allergic substances from the classroom is an important part of reducing the risk of a fatal reaction occurring at school, considering the fact that a very small amount of nuts can cause a severe allergic reaction leading to death within minutes.

From The Music Room Mr. McPherson

On May 29th, students in grade 1/2 and 2/3 classrooms will be taking part in a school families concert at Murdoch MacKay Collegiate. We will be joining students from Harold Hatcher School, Arthur Day School, and Murdoch MacKay Collegiate to celebrate making music. This is a great opportunity for our young students to see what making music in middle school and high school is all about.

On May 30th, Mr. McPherson will be taking a group of grade 4 and 5 students to the Manitoba Legislative Building to perform as a part of the Music Month concert series. This set of noon hour concerts is put on by Manitoba Education and Training and The Manitoba Music Educators Association. School must be invited to perform at these concerts. The Manitoba Legislature Building is a beautiful space to perform in and our students are very fortunate to have received an invitation to perform here for the second time this year.

On June 1st all grade 2 students will be walking over to Park Manor Care Home to perform for the residents, staff, and volunteers. This annual trip is an important way to teach our students about different ways we can give back to the community in which we live. The students have been working very hard in choir to learn 30 minutes of entertaining music, some of which you will be able to hear again at the year end assemblies at the end of June.

Even though students participated in the concert series at the end of May, April was Music Month in Manitoba Schools and the students in grade 3/4 and 4/5 spent time each school day in April listening and responding to music in a journal. The set of music was titled “Old Made New” and included Orchestral music from the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods that has been sampled or remade into something new. First, they listened to the original composition, then the next day heard how the same piece had been made new. Here are a couple examples you can look for at home!

Pachelbel – Canon in D Major  Vitamin C – Graduation Beethoven – 5th Symphony, 1st Movement  Walter Murphy – Fifth of Beethoven Edvard Grieg – In the Hall of Mountain King  Trolls Soundtrack – Hair Up

Enjoy listening and comparing!

Physical Education News

In gym classes, students in all grades are learning short and long rope skipping. Hopefully our warmer weather will encourage kids to skip outdoors. It’s a great cardiovascular activity! Grades 1, 2 and 3’s are learning many folkdances in preparation for our divisional Dance in the Park festival on May 30th. Information about that day has been sent home with students. All families are invited to watch…. bring a lawn chair or blanket. Grades 4 and 5’s are learning a very active dodgeball game called King’s court, as well as net activities such as badminton and volleyball.

Leadership Celebrations On April 30th our leaders in grades 3,4 and 5 participated in morning activities. The activities were flag rugby, tarmac activities, foosball, air hockey and yoga. We will be going to Lilac Resort June 12th for our final celebration. A big thanks to all our leaders for being responsible and doing their jobs!!!

Field Day We will be having a field day for all students on June 19. Thanks to the older students who will be helping the younger students at the different stations. There will be a wide variety of activities but the water balloon station and bubble making are always a big hit!

HELP YOUR CHILD WITH PROPER RUNNING SHOES Helpful hints when purchasing your child’s running shoes: 1. Make sure the soles don’t leave marks on the floor. 2. Make sure the size is correct (too large of shoe causes movement problems). 3. Shoe laces need to be tied tight to be effective (Students are not allowed to tuck laces inside shoes. There must be a bow on top of the shoes. Have your child demonstrate how they tie.) Younger students can tie but too loosely and they often come undone. Untied shoes are unsafe and shoes that always come undone are very frustrating. I LOVE VELCRO on running shoes for our younger students!!! 4. Skateboard shoes are too heavy for active play and too difficult to tie tightly.

All library books must be returned to the library no later than June 15th

From the Library Learning Commons Mrs. Falconer

The Library Learning Commons supports the teaching and inquiry based learning. All students at Wayoata continue to enjoy using the additional Lenova Laptops in different subject areas.

The grade 1/2 classes are learning about their community of Transcona, City of Winnipeg, Province of Manitoba and how they all belong in Canada.

Times are different for Mr. Lepage’s grade 3/4 class as they explore the Ancient Maya Civilization. Each student designed their own Maya mask with amazing creativity.

Mr. Kowal and Mrs. Morin’s grade 4/5 were living along with the Loyalists. They created a SWAY presentation in Office 365 to illustrate their learning.

Mr. Behrens’s grade 4/5 class is looking at the weather and different extremes. These will be re-created through science experiments.

Fred Fox Visits Wayoata School!

The students and staff at Wayoata Elementary School were pleased to have a special visitor on May 23.

Fred Fox, brother of Terry Fox, stopped in to speak at an assembly, and it was the first time he'd been back to the school since he and Terry were students there in 1966. The brothers were only 14 months apart in age (Fred being the elder), and he recalled their old home on Camrose Bay, just a stone's throw from the school.

Mr. Fox showed family photos of himself and Terry, spoke about what Terry was like growing up, and shared memories from Terry's Marathon of Hope in 1980.

He frequently stressed two things to the students: that Terry wasn't the best athlete and didn't naturally excel at sports; but that Terry had a sense of determination from a very early age, and that served him well. He wasn't afraid to fail, and if he wasn't good at something, he just worked harder at it.

"He was just an average kid," said Mr. Fox. "But he set goals and never gave up on his dreams."

Over $700 million has been raised for cancer research in Terry's name over the past 38 years—not bad for an average kid!

Wayoata School Appreciates Their Volunteers!

We are fortunate to have so many volunteers who contribute to our school community in a variety of ways. Whether working directly with children, or working behind the scenes, each of their contributions is invaluable. Each week, our children benefit from the time our volunteers spend with them as they share their talents.

On Friday, June 8th, Wayoata students and staff will honour our volunteers during an assembly and then will invite the volunteers to enjoy some snacks and beverages.

We would like to thank all of our volunteers and hope that many will be able to join us for the celebration on June 8th.

Wayoata School Community Council Recap of 2017-18

The Wayoata School Community Council (WSCC) has once again had a busy year organizing events for families and supporting school events. The year began with the annual Meet the Teacher BBQ evening with the ever popular bouncers being provided by the WSCC. The Halloween Dance, the Christmas Craft Night and the February movie and pizza night, all supported by the WSCC, are always well attended.

The WSCC continues to offer hot lunch to students once a month for those families who choose to participate. Food options throughout the year include pizza, hotdogs and subs. Twice this year, all students were offered a free hot dog lunch.

It is through the multiple fundraising opportunities the WSCC conducts, (Peak of the Market, Meat and Cheese, Kernels and Bloomers), that allow us to support all of the special family events as well as to support numerous school events which include the purchase of:

• music production equipment for the annual Christmas Concert and the spring musical. • Keepsake Certificates and T-Shirts for the Grade 5 Farewell • books from the book fair, selected by teachers, for classroom libraries • new pinnies for phys. ed. classes • a barbecue for the Meet the Teacher BBQ evening • snacks for Family Literacy Day

The WSCC also:

• provided snacks for staff appreciation • contributed funds towards the purchase of a fridge for the staff room • paid for the framing of Terry Fox pictures

In closing, the WSCC is able to provide the services we do because we have parents who are willing to donate their time and efforts to benefit all students, families and staff of the Wayoata school community. We are always looking for people who are willing to offer up some time to assist with carrying out the business of the WSCC. If you have some time and would like to get involved just plan to attend our monthly meetings over the course of the 2018-2019 school year. We hope to see you in the fall.

Have a great summer!!!!!

Wayoata School Greening Committee Working together to improve our school grounds

Over the past year, our playground has been transformed into a beautiful green space in which our students can play in and learn about nature. This has been a huge project which is still ongoing. Recently, picnic tables and new basketball posts, backboards and rims were installed. There will be new trees planted soon as a result of another grant being secured. The work of the team that has designed and worked to put this playground together is being recognized with an award.

The Wayoata School Greening Project has been selected as an honourable mention for the 2017 Manitoba Excellence in Sustainability Awards in the category of Education for Sustainability. Congratulations!"

The design of our playground using permeable surfaces (grass, mulch, crushed limestone), the slowing of surface water through the drainage and digging area, the materials all being natural (rocks, logs and trees), the students playing in, caring for and learning about nature earned us recognition as sustainable education in action. This adds to all the other sustainable actions the school has taken on.

Thank You

Thank you to the parents who work on the Wayoata School Community Council, the Greening Committee and the Lunch Program Committee. A few parents keep these committees going but every family benefits from the work that they do. We cannot thank them enough for all that they do for our students and families. We are fortunate that we have these parents who work for all children and families and understand the importance of contributing to the entire school community. We wish them a restful summer and hope that they return willing to work with us for the betterment of our community again next year.

Community Connector News Allison Cole

It’s hard to believe this school year is coming to an end!

We have seen more than 200 families come through our family room for our free Kinderlinks preschool programs. We have been able to offer more programming this year than any other year! This year we offered Baby Bumblebees, Gift of Words, Animal Crackers, Stars & Spaceships, Growing Up Green, Nobody’s Perfect as well as our weekly Stay & Play drop-in. The last Stay & Play will be on June 13th and will start up again in the fall. The children who have come to these programs have enjoyed crafting, singing, reading, playing and meeting new friends while the parents and caregivers have been able to meet other members in our community.
