DAN VANHOOREN Head Coach 20TH SEASON

Dan Vanhooren joined the Dinos in May 2000 and is the seventh men’s basketball head coach at the University of Calgary.

Since he took over the program, Vanhooren’s Dinos have made a steady climb into elite status in U SPORTS basketball. In just four years, he took a program that had not enjoyed a winning season in nearly a decade all the way to the conference title and within two points of the national final in 2004. It was Calgary’s first Canada West championship since 1993, and their first-round victory at the Final 8 in Halifax was the Dinos’ first national quarterfinal win in 38 years.

In 2008, he coached the Dinos to their best conference record since 1976 (18-4) and played host to the Canada West Final Four in front of a sold-out Jack Simpson Gym. Eight years later in 2016, the Dinos won their sixth Canada West Championship and went on to compete in the national finals for the first time since 1966 against the Carleton Ravens. It was the first of five consecutive trips to the national tournament for the Dinos, who captured three conference titles in four years (2016, 2018, 2019) and reached the program’s pinnacle with the 2018 national championship - a 79-77 win over Ryerson in Halifax.

The following season, the Dinos posted the first undefeated season in program history at 20-0, winning an eighth Canada West title before falling in the national final. Vanhooren earned his second Canada West coach of the year honour in 2018-19 and became the first Dinos coach to win the Stewart W. Aberdeen Trophy as U SPORTS coach of the year the same season.

Vanhooren moved to Calgary following a four-year stint as head coach of Medicine Hat College. In 2000 he coached the Rattlers to a bronze medal finish and was named the ACAC south coach of the year.

He played varsity basketball at the under the legendary Don Horwood. After three seasons with the Golden Bears, Vanhooren graduated with a Bachelor of Physical Education in 1993 and moved to graduate studies at the University of . While attending UBC he worked for the NBA’s in their inaugural season, and he received his Master’s of Human Kinetics in 1996.

Dan and his wife Kara reside in northwest Calgary with their three children: Peyton, Wyatt, and Nash.

RICHARD BOHNE 1992-1996

Four years was all University of Calgary student-athlete Richard Bohne needed to become the greatest scorer in Canada West men’s basketball history.

A member of the Dinos from 1992-1996, Bohne tallied 2,171 career points, setting a record that stood for a dozen years and has since been surpassed just once by Saskatchewan’s Andrew Spagurd, who scored 2,182 points over five years.

A native of Raymond, Alta., Bohne averaged an incredible 27.5 points in 79 Canada West regular season contests. In a span of mere weeks during the 1994- 95 season, he had the two highest-scoring games in conference history: 64 points at UBC on Jan. 28, 1995; and 54 points at home against Saskatchewan. A quarter- century later, those remain the all-time top two Canada West performances.

Bohne won the Mike Moser Memorial Trophy in 1996 as the top player in CIAU men’s basketball. He was a two-time Canada West Player of the Year (1995 and 1996), four-time Canada West All-Star (First Team 1994-1996, Second Team in 1993), three-time All-Canadian (First team in 1995 and 1996, Second Team in 1994). In his first season, 1992-93, he helped the Dinos win the Canada West title for the second time in program history, and advance to the CIAU championship in Halifax, where he was named a tournament all-star.

In 1995, Bohne was a member of Canada’s bronze-medal winning team at the FISU Games. Following his time with the Dinos, he played professionally in France.

KARL TILLEMAN 1979-1984

One of the most prolific scorers of Canadian university basketball’s pre- three-point era, Tilleman played guard for the Dinos from 1979-80 to 1983-84, graduating as their all-time leader with 2,050 points in 79 regular season games. He led the nation in scoring in both 1981-82 and 1982-83, while topping Canada West in points for three straight seasons through 1983-84.

In 1982, Tilleman became the first Dino to be named Player of the Year in Canadian university men’s basketball, an honour he received again the following year. He was a CIAU First Team All-Canadian as well an unanimous Canada West First Team All-Star for four seasons in a row, 1980-81 to 1983- 84 and was voted Canada West Player of the Year three times (1981, 1982, and 1983). Tilleman was twice awarded University of Calgary Male Athlete of the Year (1981 and 1983).

Tilleman was a two-time Olympian, representing Canada at the 1984 and 1988 Summer Games. At the ‘88 Games in Seoul, he set the Olympic record with 10 three-pointers in a single game, which has been equalled only once (2012 - Carmelo Anthony). Between his fourth and fifth years at the U of C, Tilleman won gold as a member of Team Canada at the 1983 World University Games in Edmonton.

The selected Tilleman 79th overall in the 1984 NBA Draft. Tilleman would go on to earn a law degree at Brigham Young University in 1990, and has had a lengthy legal career. He is presently a partner at the Phoenix, Arizona, office of Dentons - the largest law firm in the world.

At the final regular season game of his storied Dinos career, Feb. 25, 1984, Tilleman had his number 30 retired by the Dinos. The University of Calgary Athletic Hall of Fame enshrined Tilleman with its 1995 class, and he has also been inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame.

2019-20 DINOS MEN’S BASKETBALL MEDIA GUIDE 2020 CW AWARD WINNERS

BRETT LAYTON Player of the Year

Fourth-year forward Brett Layton was the straw that stirred the drink for the University of Calgary Dinos all season long, and his consistent performance down low have earned him the conference’s top honour.

With plenty to juggle from his second year in law school to his family with two young children, Layton still found a way to dominate most nights he took the floor. Among his myriad of accomplishments in 2019-20, he became the first player in conference history to record a 40-point, 20-rebound night Nov. 23 against Trinity Western. On the final night of the regular season he set a single-game conference record with 27 rebounds at his old stomping grounds, Mount Royal’s Kenyon Court. He led the nation with 299 rebounds – also a CW record for a 20-game season – while leading Canada West in percentage (62.8) and blocks (43) – third and second in the nation, respectively, in those two categories.

It is the ninth time a Dino has been honoured as the conference’s top player, with former teammate Mambi Diawara earning the award in 2019.

MAX EISELE Defensive Player of the Year

One of the top defenders in the nation, fourth-year University of Calgary Dinos guard Max Eisele is the Canada West Defensive Player of the Year.

The Dinos led the conference in both points per game allowed (70.8) and opponents’ field goal percentage (38.0), and much of that success can be attributed to Eisele’s performance on Calgary’s end of the floor. Usually pitted against the opponents’ top shooter, Eisele’s athleticism and competitiveness has frustrated opponents all year.

He’s the second Dino in three years to earn the honour, joining former teammate Jhony Verrone (2018).
