Newsletter #22 2019 14 June 2019

Dear Parents

We are at the end of the second term and by now you will have received your child’s report. You will have the opportunity tonight to talk with your child’s teachers and interrogate the marks that they achieved in their different subjects. On the whole we have noticed that usual drop in results from the first term. This is in part due to term 1 being based on tests and assignements while term 2 is based largely on the exam mark. For the grade 8s this has been a challenge in some subjects as they were taken by surprise by the level of difficulty of the exam. As I mentioned in a previous newsletter, we have another 6 months to apply the lessons learned in these exams. I am sure there will be some fruitful discussion following this report at home.

STAFF MATTERS At the end of this term we will be seeing some changes in our staff compliment. We will be saying goodbye to the following teachers:

 Mrs Jane Versfeld who has been teaching history while Mrs Parsons has been on maternity leave.  Ms Janet Burger who leaves to join the WCED as a Subject Advisor.  Miss Cindy Hanekom who has been teaching Afrikaans.  Mr Rasheed Isaacs who has been in a learnership position, teaching History and Geography.

We wish them well for the next part of their working journey and thank them for all they have done while at High School.

FAREWELL TO JANET BURGER On Monday morning we hosted a special assembly to say goodbye to Ms. Janet Burger, who was fondly nicknamed "Mama B. Ms Burger's long-time colleague, Ms. Kirsten Mobsby said, "She really is like a mom - both to her pupils and to many of us on the staff - she is level-headed and has nerves of steel." Ms. Burger started at Camps Bay High School in 2007, originally working in the Clothing Shop, moving into teaching full time in 2009 where she found her passion was Economics. Her passion caught the attention of the WCED who have recruited her as Subject Adviser for Economics. Said Ms Mobsby, "Ms Burger is extremely organised and always goes the extra mile to give her pupils the best possible advantage. Janet has been an ally of mine in the commerce department for a long time now. She was both a sounding board and the voice of reason through many trying times." In her emotional farewell speech, Ms. Burger touched on her time at Camps Bay High School and her fondness for the school. Said Ms Burger, "If you had asked me last term where I see myself in 5 years time I would have said still at Camps Bay High as I had no intention of going anywhere. But, life happens and sometimes life has other ideas for you. I could have stayed at Camps Bay High for the next 5 years, teaching a thousand or so pupils, or I could add value through empowering and helping teachers to teach and add value to hundreds of thousands of learners." Over the past month,

Ms Burger has been getting stuck into her new role as Subject Advisor for Economics which has made her more appreciative of all that Camps Bay High School has to offer. She said to the students "You are so lucky to be at Camps Bay High School. Grasp every moment and opportunity to learn and engage, that you can, for others have very little... 40 - 72 learners in one class with one teacher... No computers in the class... no wi-fi... no monitors.. not even an overhead projector and very few textbooks... the last ten minutes of every day, learners clean their own classrooms and empty the bins. If nothing else, be grateful and kind." Ms Mobsby concluded, "Ms Burger will be sorely missed at Camps Bay High School and she has definitely left her mark. I am sure she will blaze a trail in the department as Subject Advisor. In this position, Janet will be able to assist so many more schools in both EMS and Economics - it makes perfect sense that you do this, even though it means that we have to say goodbye to you."

UNIFORM MATTERS

Mr Robbertze has flagged the following uniform issues this term.

1) LONG PANTS:

 The fact that the colour is wrong.  Some learners have tailored their pants and they are now too tight.  The length of the pants has been altered to be too short or they are being rolled up. Their pants should cover their socks when standing. 2) SHOES:

 A reminder that the school is a brown polishable, lace up school type shoe.  Parents are also to make sure that the learners actually polish their shoes on a weekly basis.

3) SOCKS:

 Girls have to wear white ankle socks.  Boys are to wear brown socks.

4) SKORTS:

 Short skorts are not acceptable therefore if they have altered these skorts to be to short it should be replaced immediately.  New stock is available.

5) WINTER UNIFORM:

 We have Winter uniform items that can keep your child warm. We request no other clothing items be worn with the uniform (like a civvie jacket or beanie).

Can I ask you to review your child’s uniform and check it complies with our standards. Thank you for your help in this regard.

Bright Start is hosting a Halloween party fundraiser on 1 November at Suikerbossie, all the proceeds of which will go towards the school fees of their CBHS children. It promises to be a great (grown-up) night out, at a superb venue, and we would like to encourage our parents to support it, and also help us spread the word amongst family and friends. This is also a great opportunity for businesses to benefit from a tax deductible executive year-end function, as well as receive B-BBEE points for Social Development Spend, all while enjoying Suikerbossie’s legendary hospitality, together with the generous support of Cape Town Balloon & Event Company, party-planners extraordinaire.
