November 27, 1987 Preface

The enclosed genealogical material on the Shouse family is intended primarily as a supplement to the several works already in print. No effort is made to make it all inclusive - the idea being to make available in one place some of the more recent research by several people. Most of these researchers are shown in a listing at the end of this paper.

Possibly a word should be said regarding the numbering system. A common prefix number is given to each family treated. All the members of a group whose relationships are known are identified by this common prefix number. Each individual within each group is given, in the usual manner, a separate number which follows the common prefix number. In this way it is believed the reader is less likely to confuse individuals from different groups as might be the case if the same numbering system were used over and over for each group.

There are no restrictions on the reproduction of this genealogical data other than that it should not be reproduced for commercial gain.

The data shown herein are available on computer disk. The operating software is IBM Disk Operating System and the word processing software used is Leading Edge.

We sincerely thank each contributor of material shown herein. Without the sharing of research and the cooperation of these individuals this data would not be available for the readers perusal. Shouse (Chouse, Schaus, Schauss, Schous, Schouse, Schouss, Shaus, Shause, Shauss, Shosse, Shous, Shouss, Shosse, Show, Shows and other spellings)

The Schauss family in so far as we know originated in the area of on the in what is now a part of Rhineland Palatinate. In a very short account of this area furnished by Mr. Harold P. Shouse of Grand Rapids, Michigan, it is said that around the year 500 this area was settled by the Franks. A nobleman of the Franks erected a large court at the river Pfrimm, which later became the Kings Court and was named Albulf Villa, after the builder of the Court. In this court stayed the Kings of the Franks when they traveled across the country to hold Courts of Justice. In the year 835 King Ludway the Pios, king of the Franks, gives this Kings Court as a present to the Monastery Prum in the Eifel. Around the year 1,000 the village Albisheim on the Pfrimm is written over to the Count of Leiningen. In the year 1613/14 the Counts of Nussau-Weilburg acquire the Village Albisheim together with three other villages of the surrounding area. From 1794-1816 Albisheim belonged to France under Emperor Napoleon I. From 1816-1946 Albisheim belonged to the State of Bavaria, Government-Region Rheinpfalz. Since 1946 Albisheim belongs to the State Rheinland-Pfalz (English for this in Rhineland Palatinate).

Mr. Shouse has given us the oldest extant manuscript from Albisheim from the year 835 translated from Gothic to German to English, in which is mentioned Albulfi Village, the original name of Albisheim.

"Out of emperial grace present I, Ludwig, the ruler over the empire of the Franks, to our souls salvation, to the abbacy in Prum under the Abt. Marquardus that which is owned and belongs to us and lies in the District of Worms in the place that is called Albufi Village, which belongs to the Head-Church, also to Gomuritesheim () as well as in Stetin (Stetten) and the land holding between the mentioned places and all the serfs of both sexes that live there. In addition the Head-Church (Mainchurch) that was built in Albulfi Village, with the tithe of the mentioned places that by law belong to it, give we as a gift as own property to the monastary Prum, with Houses, Buildings, fields, meadows, woods, rivers, their drainage, mouths and branches all that belongs by law to our property in the before-mentioned place.

Signature or Seal of Given in Albulfi Village at Emperor Ludwig. the Kings-Court, on the 25th day of May, A. D. 835."

If the reader will refer to the last page of this document prior to footnotes a map is presented showing Albisheim and surrounding area all lying west of the River and

1 approximately 65 kilometers southwest of Frankfurt on . Gollheim has the Bureau of Records for the District of Kaiserslautern.

Christian; baptized July 20, 1748 at Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lehigh Co., Pa., parents Adam and Barbara Schauss; not traced but may be the Christian Shouse who was married to Magdalena _____ prior to Sept. 9, 1786 when they are shown in a deed recorded in Stokes Co., N. C.

The first four children are shown in church records of Albisheim, and apparently the fifth child is also shown. Heinrich (who is shown in church records of North Carolina Moravians as brother of Philipp at the christening of Heinrich's eldest son Heinrich or Henry) and Elizabeth Benigna whose death record indicates she was a daughter of the miller Adam Shouse, are proven as children. The Bethlehem Diary, Volume I , 1742-44, page 213, when taken in context with the many previous references to Johann Adam Schaus leaves no doubt that Gottlieb was the son of Johann Adam Shouse. This leaves only Conrad, and Anna Margaret who are not proven, and the possibility is good that they also were children.

It is interesting to note in a biographical sketch of William Shouse (1-95.) written in 1879, that Frederick (1-18.), Conrad (1-20.), and Adam (?) are given as brothers. Johann Adam the father was probably confused and identified as a brother of his sons.

Johann Adam Shouse and Barbara and five (?) children emigrated in 1736. Two children (Conrad and Henry) and possibly a third, Anna Margaret, were born in America; a child every two years from 1736 to 1742; only Henry's date of birth can be found - 1741 (Bible). Then birth/baptismal records are available for Elizabeth Benigna, 1742; Gottlieb, 1744; and Christian, 1748.

Johann Adam Schaus emigrated from Albisheim, the Palatinate, Germany, arriving on ship Harle, Capt. Ralph Harle Captain, Sept. 1, 1736; and one of the last accounts of him was for

3 jury duty in Rowan County, N. C., in 1769.

The information on John Adam Schauss and wife Barbara (Baum) Shouse and their children is a composite of the shared research of several people, notable among whom are Mrs. Pete Baucum, Mr. Harold P. Shouse and Mr. Mark H. Welchley (see end of this paper for addresses and telephone numbers). Sources include church records in Germany; IGI Index of the Church of the Latter Day Saints; and many others.

1-17. Phillip Nichalaus Schaus (Philipp Nikolaus Schauss, Shouse , etc.); born Albisheim, Germany, Dec. 17 or 21, 1728; died Stokes Co., N. C., 1810; will dated May 7, 1809, proved December Term 1810; married at Jordan Evangelical Lutheran Church, now in South Whitehall Township, Lehigh County, Pa., July 19, 1748, Maria Catherine Beck (born Jan. 6, 1734; died Nov. 16, 1796. Children: 1-26. Anna Marie; born Pennsylvania, Oct. 13, 1749; died Bethenia, N. C., April 29, 1760; a single person. 1-27. Elizabeth; born "on the Yadkin River", N. C., Nov. 4, 1755; died Bethania, Sept. 30, 1804; married Jon. Heinrich Krieger. + 1-28. Susanna; born Feb. 24, 1758; died June 4, 1828. + 1-29. Daniel; born July 22, 1760; living May 7, 1809. 1-30. Joseph; born Bethenia, N. C., Feb. 17, 1763; died Bethania, N. C., July 25, 1780, a single person. 1-31. Frederick; born Bethania, N. C., Feb. 5, 1765; living May 7, 1809; married 1784, Elizabeth Hilsbeck; on 1790 Stokes Co., N. C., tax list. + 1-32. Heinrich; born April 4, 1767; living May 7, 1809; not traced with certainty; possibly is the Henry whose last will was probated December, 1810. 1-33. Johannes; born Bethania, N. C., Dec. 8, 1769; living May 7, 1809. 1-34. Christian; born near Bethania, N. C., Sept. 26, 1772; died May 11, 1788; drowned on the Yadkin River. 1-35. Catharina; born Sept. 6, 1776; living May 7, 1809; died a single person. 1-36. Salome; born near Bethania, N. C., July 9, 1780 (Bethania Diary); living May 7, 1809.

Information on the family of Phillip Nichalaus Schauss furnished by The Moravian Archives, 4 East Bank Street, Winston-Salem, N. C. 27101-5307, telephone 919-722-1742, Sept. 29, 1987: "During the Cherokee war, Philip Schaus and his family took refuge at the Bethabara Mill. When Bethania was founded in 1759, they moved there from the mill stockade. They remained there until late in the year 1771 when they moved to a farm outside the Wachovia tract (an early Movavian land purchase now located in Forsyth County, N. C.) Catharina died Nov. 16, 1796, and was buried on their farm by the minister of Bethania. We find no direct mention of Philip's death."

"An early document on the graveyard for non-members at Bethabara states: 'died 1810, a man, Philip Schaus.' We have no proof that this is the Philip born 1728, but we also have no

4 record of any other Philip in the area at that time. Also in the same graveyard book is listed: 'died 1771, Adam Schaus, widower, in Bethania at home of his son.' We have no proof that this is Johann Adam Schaus." Since Phillip Schauss was living at Bethania until late in the year 1771, presumably his father Johannes Adam Schaus died at his home.

Information on Phillip Nichalaus Schaus and family was furnished by Mrs. Pete Baucum and others.

1-18. Frederick Christopher Schaus (Friedrich Christop Schauss, Shouse , etc.); mason; born Jan. 13, 1730 (Mrs. Bauman gives: "christened at Albisheim, Germany; April 15, 1727?) [born April 13 or 15, 1727 and baptized Jan. 13, 1730 may be the correct sequence of birth and baptism]; died Easton, Northampton Co., Pa., Feb. 20, 1788; will written Feb. 18, 1788, probated March 17, 1788, Northampton Co., Pa.; married Easton, Pa., ca. 1750, Eva Katherine Kraus (born ca. 1733; died Easton, Northampton Co., Pa., Sept. 22, 1787). Children as named in original will of Frederick Shouse, and all were living Feb. 18, 1788: 1-37. Anna Maria "Mary"; born ca. 1751; living Feb. 18, 1788; see below. 1-38. Christian; born 1752 or 1753; died Dec. 12, 1831; see below. 1-39. Henry or Heinrich; born ca. 1754; living Jan. 9, 1799; see below. 1-40. Jacob; will recorded Oct. 7, 1831; see below. + 1-41. John or Johannes; born April 24, 1768; living July 3, 1818.

The descendants of Henry Shouse (wife, Elizabeth Rose), son of Frederick Christopher Schaus can be furnished by Mark H. Welchley, Aliquippa, Pa., whose wife's line is Johannes Adam Schaus through his son Frederick Christopher Schaus.

1-22. Heinrich "Henry" Schaus (Shouse) ;4 born probably in Bucks (now Northampton) County, Pa., in or near Easton, 1741 (Bible); died Woodford Co., Ky., Sept. 26, 1825; will dated Aug. 31, 1825; married first, Rowan Co., N. C., Feb. 20, 1769, Elizabeth Bone (died before March 5, 1779; J. Adam Shouse and John Bone, Bondsmen on marriage record). Children: + 1-42. Heinrich "Henry"; christened Feb. 17, 1770; died ca. 1817. + 1-43. Johannes "John"; christened Feb. 21, 1772; living Aug. 31, 1825. 1-44. Nancy; born ca. 1773; died Oct. 12, 1854, aged 82 (Bible); married (Jesse?) Carpenter of Woodford Co., Ky., who was guardian to Dudley Jones Shouse. + 1-45. Adam; born ca. 1775; died probably May 29, 1807 (before October, 1807). 1-46. Rachel; born ca. 1778; died prior to April 11, 1832; married Woodford Co., Ky., May 28, 1798, Joseph Martin; married by Carter Tarrents.

Heinrich "Henry" Schaus (Shouse) married second, Rowan Co., N. C., March 1, 1779, Elizabeth Jones (born 1756; died March 5, 1832 [copy of Bible record]; daughter of Thomas Jones who died in Montgomery Co., Ky.). Children: + 1-47. Thomas Jones; born December, 1779; died Feb. 27, 1820 (Bible). + 1-48. Samuel; born April 3, 1784; died March 5, 1842. + 1-49. Daniel; born March 26, 1786; died Nov. 20, 1866.

5 1-50. Elizabeth; born Feb. 1, 1788; died Mary 31, 1831; married a Mr. Dale, possibly a son of Abraham Dale who was a neighbor of Henry Shouse in Woodford County and who witnessed his will. 1-51. Malinda "Melender"; born ca. 1790; living Nov. 30, 1833; married Woodford Co., Ky., March 25, 1808, Joseph Roper of Woodford Co., Ky.; married by Carter Tarrents. + 1-52. William; born April 24, 1791: died Sept. 5, 1866. + 1-53. Mary; born Sept. 20, 1793; died Aug. 17, 1849 (?). + 1-54. Diana; born Feb. 17, 1795; died May 9, 1867. + 1-55. Permelia; born ca. 1804; died March, 1870, aged 66. + 1-56. Rebecca; born ca. 1808.

A deed signed by " Henry Shouse Resident of Kentucky " is recorded in Rowan Co., N. C., Deed Book 12, pages 169 and 170 in which for 150 pounds he sells 301 acres situate lying & being in the County of Rowan on the waters of the Yadkin Beginning at a post Oak Richmond Pearsons North East Corner & runs along a conditional line North forty five Degrees East twenty five chains to a stake thence West fifty five Chains to a Stake on Richmond Pearsons line thence with Pearsons line to the Beginning - be the same more or less with the appurtinanas Situate lying & being as afsd . ? as in Deed page 145 from Lewis Beard to Thos. Frohock to these words. Recorded Novr. Sepm. 1790.

Two badly garbled copies of Bible records shows one Adam Shouse (brother of Daniel Shouse); born May 29, 1807; died May 21, 1891. No one has come forth with any public record indicating that such a person with this birth and death date ever existed and it appears that the birth date of May 29, 1807 was actually a death date for Adam Shouse who is known to have died in 1807 as evidenced by the administration of his estate. The "death date" of May 21, 1891 was 18 years later than any other date in the entire record and apparently was another error. Henry Shouse wrote his will Aug. 31, 1825 in which he named his "twelve children now living" and Adam was not listed.

Records of the Moravians in North Carolina , mentions Heinrich Schaus and Christian Schaus. Among the sponsors listed at the baptism of Heinrich Schaus's first son in 1770 is "Philip Schaus, his own brother." This proves Heinrich and Phillip were brothers and since Phillip is known to be the son of Johann Adam Schaus, it follows that Heinrich also was. Johann Adam Schauss signed the bond for Heinrich to marry Elizabeth Bone. Johann Adam Schaus died in Bethania at the home of his son [apparently Phillip].

1-28. Susanna Shouse ; born "on the Yadkin River", N. C., Feb. 24, 1758; died Bethania (Winston-Salem), N. C., June 4, 1828; married Joh. Jacob Krieger . Children shown numbered six: 1-57. through 1-62.

1-29. Daniel Shouse ; born Bethenia, N. C., July 22, 1760; shown on Stokes Co., N. C., 1790

6 and 1800 tax lists; married Catharina Elisabeth Fessler (born Sept. 7, 1763). Children listed in baptisms of children of friends and neighbors; all born Bethania, North Carolina: 1-63. Elisabeth; born March 29, 1782. 1-64. Joseph; born May 28, 1783. 1-65. Heinrich; born May 8, 1785. 1-66. Maria Catharina; born Sept. 14, 1792. 1-67. Maria Magdalena; born Dec. 18, 1800. 1-68. Johann Jacob; born Jan. 3, 1804. 1-69. Lydia; born May 10, 1806.

1-32. Heinrich "Henry" Shouse ; born Bethania, N. C., April 4, 1767; last will (courthouse copy) was dated Sept. 30, 1806, and probated December Term of Court 1810, Stokes Co., N. C.; married Surry Co., N., Jan. 17, 1788 (bond), Elizabeth Null (died prior to 1818); marriage bond dated Jan. 17, 1788, bondsman Daniel Shouse; will of Henry Shouse names wife Elizabeth and brother-in-law John Null. Children as indicated in will: + 1-70. John. 1-71. Cathy "Catherine"; married Joseph Holder; marriage bond dated Jan. 23, 1808; Stokes Co., N. C.; bondsman John Henry Linebach, witness N. Shober. 1-72. Elizabeth; married Henry Stahr. + 1-73. Mary. 1-74. Salley; single in April, 1818. + 1-75. Henry, Jr.; born 1796 or 1797; living 1850.

Philip Shouse in his will dated May 7, 1809 indicated that his son Henry was then living; this will was proven in December Term of Court 1810. Apparently, Heinrich "Henry" Shouse, with wife Elizabeth Null, died after May 7, 1809, otherwise, he obviously would not have been the son of Philip Shouse. When Shouse Families was written in 1963 the copy of the will of Heinrich "Henry" Shouse provided to the author by the court erroneously gave a probate date of 1806. Hence the incorrect death date of 1806 for Heinrich "Henry" Shouse.

In Flowering of the Cumberland by Harriette Simpson Arnow, 1963, The Macmillan Company, New York, page 300, is an account of the new manufacturing on the Cumberland River in Tennessee and Kentucky in the early 1800's: "The first pottery firm I found was that of Schauss and Null, who in the winter of 1799 was doing a good business in the neighborhood of Nashville." [Tennessee Gazette, Nov. 28, 1804.]

The above Schauss may or may not be the above Henry who married Elizabeth Null.

1-37. Anna Maria "Mary" Shouse ; born Easton, Pa., ca. 1751; living Feb. 18, 1788; married Michael Yohe (living Easton (Northampton County), Pa., Feb. 18, 1788). Children (Maria and Michael) as shown by records of The First Reformed Church of Easton, Pa., and (other children) as shown by records of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Easton, Pa.; all born Easton (Northampton County), Pa.:

7 1-76. Eva Catharina; born Aug. 17, 1771; baptizedDec. 15, 1771. 1-77. Afader; born Feb. 9, 1774; baptized May 26, 1776. 1-78. Maria; born Oct. 12, 1776; baptized Dec. 1, 1776. 1-79. Catharina; born Jan. 4, 1780; baptized Dec. 7, 1780 1-80. Michael; born July 25, 1782; baptized Oct. 12, 1787. 1-81. Jacob; born April 23, 1784; baptized May 2, 1784. 1-82. Sara; born March 3, 1785; baptized March 9, 1785. 1-83. Abraham; born Nov. 29, 1787; baptized Dec. 9, 1787. 1-84. Susana; born June 10, 1792; baptized July 29, 1792.

1-38. Christian Shouse ; born in or near what is now Easton (Northampton County), Pa., 1752 or 1753; living Knox Township, Jefferson Co., Ohio, 1818, died Dec. 12, 1831, possibly in Washington Co., Ohio; married _____ (born prior to 1756; name appears to have been Mary "Polly"; the name should be verified in Ohio records). Possible children as indicated in Washington Co., Pa., 1790 and 1800 census records: 1-85. A son; born prior to 1775. 1-86. A son; born 1774-90. 1-87. A son; born 1790-1800.

In a 1820 Ohio Census index (HA571U5O4), Barnard Shouse in shown on page 41A in Fox Township of Columbiana County; Christian Shouse is shown on page 268A of Knox Township of Jefferson County; Jacob Shouse is shown on page 267A of Knox Township of Jefferson County; and what appears to be John Shouse appears on page 253A of Knox Township of Jefferson County.

Mrs. Janice H. Bush, Irvine, Ky., wrote on May 14, 1986, that she believes her ancestor Mary Ann Chouse who married Madison Co., Ky., 1807, Benjamin Hisle, was a daughter of the Christian Shouse "Chouse" of Madison Co., Ky. She believes, but cannot prove, that Christian Chouse and wife, Mary, were Mary Ann's parents. The permission slip for Mary Ann to marry Benjamin Hisle was signed by Abraham Chouse but does not state relationship. Abraham shows up later in Bourbon Co., Ky., censuses - sometimes listed as "Abram." In 1985 Janice Buse came across some deeds in the Madison County Courthouse where Christian Chouse and his wife, Mary, sold land on Otter Creek in Madison County. These deeds cover the period 1806-1809 and by 1810 Christian and Mary Chouse disappear. Janice also feels that the above mentioned Abraham Chouse was a brother of Mary Ann's due to his age on later censuses, and that Jacob Shouse, taxpayer in Madison County in 1800 was a son of Christian and Mary. A "Jacob Shouse" married Woodford Co., Ky., March 1, 1794, Susanna Haghy (Marriage Records of Woodford Co., Ky.).

Christian Shouse was of record in Pennsylvania, until he appeared in Knox Township, Jefferson Co., Ohio.

The enigma of how many contemporary Christian Shouses there were may never be

8 solved; however, some observations can be made. The Records of the Moravians in North Carolina mentions Heinrich Schaus and a Christian Schaus, both of whom are too old to be Philip Schaus' (1-17.) sons. The list of taxables in Rowan Co., N. C., for 1768 - John Brandon's List - shows Adam Souse [this is Johann Adam Schaus (1-8.)] and Christon and Henry Souse. This Christian would appear to be Christian who was married to Magdalena prior to the Sept. 9, 1786, deed recorded in Stokes Co., N. C.

At the baptism of Heinrich's first son Henry in 1770 is "Philip Schaus, his own brother." Since we know that Philip was a son of Johannes Adam Schaus it follows that Heinrich also was a son of Johannes Adam Schaus. The Christian who was married to Magdalena was married prior to Sept. 9, 1786. Christian [son of Philip Shouse] was born Sept. 26, 1772 and died May 11, 1788, according to Mrs. Baucum.

There was a Christian Shouse who married Stokes Co., N. C., marriage bond dated March 20, 1811. Another Christian Shouse, born 1775-1794, is enumerated in the 1820 census, page 369, of Stokes Co., N. C., as head of a household consisting of, other than himself, three males born 1810-20; three females born 1810-20; and one female born 1775-94 - too many children to have married March 20, 1811. To complicate things further, Christian Shouse and wife Mary "Polly" are of record in Madison Co., Ky., and may very well have come from North Carolina.

There was a lease, dated May, 1807, of a lead mine given to John Shouse, and recorded in Territorial records of Indiana. This lease indicated John Shouse was of Kentucky.

In Livingston Co., Ky., Court Order Book , page 227, for Monday, Dec. 20, 1813: "Ordered that John W. Chouse be bound to Jas. H. Shouse, infant son of Adam Shouse and in the Bible records of Daniel Shouse (son of Henry Shouse) there appears a date of May 29, 1807 opposite the name Adam Shouse which must be the date of Adam Shouse's death judging from the date of appraisal of his estate dated July 22, 1807 and the sale of his property is recorded in May Court 1813 (see Woodford Co., Ky., Will Book D, pages 70 and 72. A fascinating biographical sketch of William Shouse was written in 1879 (see footnote) describing the business career. He was engaged in many business pursuits. The year or

15 age has to be incorrect and the date of June 17, 1878, furnished by others is apparently correct. He was among other ventures the proprietor of the "Green Tree" hotel later known as the Franklin House.

Peter Shouse born North Carolina, 1811 or 1812

Mrs. Jeanette Shouse, Route 1, Box 62, Jackson, Ky. 41339, furnished the following genealogy:

3-1. Peter Shouse ; born North Carolina, 1811 or 1812; living 1880 in Owsley Co., Ky. (his father and mother are shown as being born in North Carolina); married Stokes County, N. C. (marriage bond dated Jan. 16, 1833; signed by Henry Shouse and witnessed by John M. Vanhoy), Malinda Moser (born North Carolina, 1814 or 1815; father and mother are shown as being born in North Carolina). Children: 3-2. Charity S.; born 1839. + 3-3. Wiley N.; born 1842. 3-4. Nancy A.; born 1844. 3-5. Juliana; born 1845. 3-6. Amanda C.; born 1846. 3-7. Birdetta; born 1847.

25 + 3-8. Henry Thomas; born 1849. 3-9. Eliza; born 1850. 3-10. Isaac; born 1852. 3-11. Calvin; born 1854; married Aggy Mullins of Breathitt County, Ky. 3-12. Emly; born 1859.

"Peter and Malinday left North Carolina probably between 1844-46 and moved into Grainger County, Tenn. They were there in the 1850 census, but had gone in the 1860 census. In 1870 Peter and Malinda were in Breathitt Co., Ky., and Henry Thomas was back in Grainger with a wife and three children. In 1880, both Peter and Henry and their families were in this area in Owsley Co., Ky."

3-3. Wiley N. Shouse ; not traced; however, Rachel Shouse, born 1867 or 1868, is shown in the 1880 census soundex as a granddaughter of Peter Shouse, and Wiley N. Shouse would be the only one old enough other than Henry Thomas (whose children are known) to have Shouse children born in 1867 or 1868. Presumed child: 3-13, Rachel; born Kentucky, 1867 or 1868 (there is some question about her date of birth - Mrs. Feanette Shouse gives it as 1861 and that she was probably a daughter of Peter and Malinda); married Hezekiah Hall of Breathitt County, Ky.

On October 24, 1987, Mr. Harold P. Shouse, 1325 Aberdeen Street, N. E., Grand Rapids, Michigan 49505, who is 82 years old; born in Michigan, spoke at length of his paternal ancestry and his trip in pursuit thereof to Germany approximately ten years ago. He informed the listener his great-grandfather Abraham Shouse arrived in the United States at Galveston, Texas, in 1850 and eventually made his way to Zelienople, Pa., a few miles northwest of Pittsburgh where he settled on a farm west of Zelienople and is buried in the cemetery of the Burry Reformed Church at Sewickley, southwest of Zelienople. With correspondence to Galeheim, Germany, Harold P. Shouse wrote to the Catholic Bishop, to the head of the Reformed Church and to the head of the Lutheran Church for information. The Catholic Church responded, and the Lutheran Church eventually responded and put him in contact with a School Master, Professor Wasem of Albisheim, Germany, whom he later visited during his trip to Europe. Professor Wasem was the

27 unofficial historian of Albisheim and surrounding area and brought official records pertaining to the Schauss family from City Hall for him to copy during his week long stay in Albisheim. According to Mr. Shouse, Albisheim with about 2,000 people is on highway No. 47, twenty-one kilometers or about fourteen miles west of Worms which is on the Rhein River roughly midway between Mainz on the north and Ludwigshafen and Mannheim on the south. Ms. Mary B. Pruett, Route 1, Box 220, Centerville, Tennessee 37033, on June 14, 1977, sent in the following data: "I have been trying for several years to trace my family but so far have not been able to get out of Hickman County. My great-great-great grandfather is the Jacob Shouse you mentioned as living in Hickman County. His correct birth date is Jan. 3, 1804, somewhere in North Carolina. His wife was Elizabeth McClannahan. After her death, Jacob married Jennie Cash. Jacob received a land grant in this county in 1825, and came here in 1826. He died July 16, 1889, in Hickman County. The son, Marten, was called Van Buren. He is my

34 great-great grandfather. The Howell Shouse you mention was not a descendant of Jacob's - his brother was Calvin Shouse. According to my records, Calvin, Howell, Cordelia, and Susan were the children of Jack and Pheriba (Huddleston) Shouse. You have Daniel as their father [this information on page 39 of Shouse Families by Eugene E. Trimble is probably incorrect] and I am curious about where you got that information. Although the 1830 census shows him in Hickman County, he received land in adjoining Humphreys County in 1814. I think he moved to Hickman County sometime before 1820. There was also a John D. Shouse in Humphreys County around 1837 and a Joseph Shouse, born about 1783 in North Carolina, who came to Humphreys County in the early 1830's. His wife was Nancy (born in Tennessee) and he had a daughter Adeline. Probably he had others too. A John R. Shouse lived in Hickman County in 1820 and up until at least 1837. In 1820, three Shouse households are listed: Catherine, William, and Joseph. William and Catherine did not appear on the 1830 census and Joseph was on the Dickson County Census of that year. I am fairly certain this is the same one since the ages check. Joseph is not on the 1840 Hickman County census. Catherine was evidently born in 1775 or earlier. Her household included (in 1820) 1 male 16-18, 1 male 16-25, 1 male 26-44, 2 females 10-15, 1 female 16-26, 1 female 26-45, and 1 female 45 or over. I am assuming Catherine is the latter and that she had a married son in her household, perhaps even two. I could be wrong, of course. At one time there were a great many Shouses in this county; however, my father and grandfather are the last of that name. If you have or ever run across any more information on any of the Shouses who came to this area, I would appreciate your letting me know. I feel that with a little research, Jacob Shouse's parents could be identified since I do know his birth date. If I could ever get to North Carolina, perhaps I would find out more. I am at a stand still here right now, though I've been lucky enough to find a good deal of information on those in this area. Our courthouse burned in the War, so all records (except deeds) were lost."

According to Ms. Mary B. Pruett:

Mary Ann Shouse married James E. Furr and they were living in Prairie County, Arkansas as shown in the 1850 census, page 294. "I am presuming from the above information from the census that John R. Shouse was father to my Mary Ann, but would like definite information."

1850 census Prairie County, Arkansas: Shouse, John R. - aged 55 - born South Carolina Shouse, Margaret - aged 44 - born Kentucky Shouse, William - aged 17 - born Tennessee Shouse, Cordelia - aged 14 - born Arkansas Shouse, Alonzo - aged 8 - born Arkansas Shouse, Charles - aged 6 - born Arkansas Shouse, John - aged 3 - born Arkansas Shouse, Margaret - aged two months - born Arkansas Shouse, Daniel - aged 60 - born South Carolina Vials, John - aged 37 - born South Carolina

John R. Shouse was enumerated in Hickman Co., Tenn., in 1820 and lived there until at least 1837; was enumerated in Pulaski Co., Ark., in the 1840 census. There was a John D. Shouse in Humphreys Co., Tenn., around 1837 - his identity is unknown.

Wesley or Wisley Shouse born Tennessee, 1829 or 1830 is enumerated as a farmer in the household of James E. Furr, born 1828 or 1829. James E. Furr was married to Mary Ann Shouse, born Tennessee, 1830 or 1831, and they had one daughter Elizabeth C. Furr shown in the

36 1850 census of Prairie County, Arkansas, page 291.

This Daniel Shouse, born South Carolina, 1789 or 1790 and John R. Shouse, born South Carolina, 1794 or 1795, were possibly the children of Jacob Show shown in the 1800 census of Edgefield County, South Carolina, thusly: 20010-10100-00. There were no other persons of the name Shouse, or any similiar name, in South Carolina in 1790 and 1800, and for this reason as well as the fact that the household of Jacob Show fits the ages for Daniel and John R. Shouse, it is possible that Daniel Shouse and John R. Shouse were children of Jacob Show. The name Shouse does not appear in the indexes of South Carolina for 1810 and 1820.

A "Daniel Shows", probably not the one shown above is enumerated in Warren County, Ga., 1820 census, page 282, and Daniel Shows, is enumerated in Ware County, Ga., in 1830 census, page 210. Also one H. W. Shows is enumerated in Wilkinson County, Ga., 1830 census, page 346.

Christopher Shonce, Conrod Show and Conrod Show, Junr. are all shown in the 1790 census printed index of Frederick County, Maryland . Their identities are not known; however, judging from a careful examination of the land records of Frederick Co., Md., they appear to have absolutely no connection to the Schauss family. A Frederick Co., Md., will is recorded Feb. 28, 1793 in Vol. GM, No. 2, page 461 for Conrad Show. No Shouses appear in these will records.

John Shouse born prior to 1756 is shown in a printed index of the Lower Antietam Hundred, Washington Co., Md., 1800 census , page 627, line 13 (machine numbered 132?), thusly 01001-00010-00, with wife born 1755-74 and one male presumably his son born 1784-1790. Abraham Shous is shown in a printed index of Lower Antietam Hundred, Washington Co., Md., in 1810 , page 493. Philip Shous is shown in same Hundred on page 494. No one with the name Abraham or John Shouse was found in the land records of Washington Co., Md. No Shouses appear in the indexes for this county in 1820. These entries for John in 1800 and Abraham for 1810 are possibly errors in reading the census.

Philip Shous, and Philip Shouse are shown in the printed index to the Washington Co., Md., 1810 census , pages 494, and 461 respectively. Philip Shouse, Sr. and Jr., are shown in the printed index to the Jefferson Co., Va. (now West Virginia), 1820 census, page 102, and are, no doubt, the same ones shown above in Washington Co., Md., in 1810. Washington Co., Md., and Jefferson Co., W. Va. are just across the state line from each other.

The land records of Washington Co., Md., were examined for the name Philip Shouse and other spellings. Five deeds were found wherein Philip Shouse purchased and sold land as follows:

37 • Andrew Grimm to Philip Shause; dated Dec. 28, 1799; recorded Feb. 21, 1800; Vol. M, page 336. • Peter Grimm to Philip Shaus; dated ____ ; recorded 1804; Vol. P, page 760. • Philip Shouse to Jacob Kern; dated May 12, 1806; recorded Aug 12, 1806; Vol. S, page 351. • Yost Smith to Philip Shouse, Sr.; dated June 24, 1806; recorded Oct 29, 1806; Vol. S, page 431. • Philip Shouse, Sr. to Ephraim Smith; dated May 1, 1813; recorded Oct 27, 1813; Vol. Z, page 13.

In these deeds signed by Philip Shouse his signature is in German and the recording clerk also indicated the originals were signed in German. In those instances where he sold land which he had previously purchased, his wife Mary appeared and released her dower rights. Philip Shouse died intestate in Jefferson Co., W. Va., where Estate Accounts are recorded Sept. 17, 1832 (page 97); Jan. 18, 1836 (page 113), and Feb. 19, 1838 (page 122). These have not been examined at Charles Town, W. Va., to see if they show the names of heirs - nor have marriage records been examined to see if any Shouse marriages are recorded (Wills of Jefferson Co., W. Va., An Index 1801-1899, by Dale Walton Morrow and Deborah Jenson Morrow 1982).

There was one other deed from Ephraim Smith to Philip Schouser; signed ____; recorded 1815; Vol AA, page 234, for which the micro film could not be located at the Maryland Hall of Records.

Shown in the printed index of the Jefferson County, Va., 1810 census are Henry Show (02110-40100-01) and Jacob Show (20201-10300-00) whose identities are unknown.

Dr. Helmut Prossler, 5411 Arzheim bei Koblenz, Muhlenber 2, Germany (West), wrote on Jan. 5, 1968, "I have written Kaiserslaute in Palz (Palatinate) for information concerning the native-town of Schaus. I have found a marriage in Kaub/Rhine dated Dec. 28, 1583 where Jacob Schauss married Catharina _____ from Musntermaifeld/Eifel. Jacob was a member of the reformated church (church of Calvin). Possibly he was a soldier in the castle of Kaub, which belonged to the Palatinate. The inhabitants of Kaub were Catholic.

Dr. Prossler later, on Feb. 11, 1968 wrote further, "I have studied the directory of the Dreuznach region, and had found there several Schaus. The Schaus family originate from the same region as the Werking family. I know that region because, about 1850, my greatgrandfather was a teacher at , which lies between Eckweiler, Daubach and Burgaponheim, Mandel (Werking). Daubach is a very small place in a high-lying forest district, the , highest mountain range of the Hunsruck. Eckweiler, where some of Schaus families lived, lies at a few kilometers' distance from Daubach. This district was part of the ancient principality of the Palatinate. Only a few families of Reformed Faith lived in such places as Daubach and Eckweiler, the population being for the most part Evangelical. This was the reason for the Reformed families emigrating to America.

"There is no doubt, at any rate, that Johann Adam Schauss does not exist at Daubach and Eckweiler on the date of his emigration to America. From 1732 onward only the Heinrich and Peter Schaus families exist at Daubach and Eckweiler. Near the two places lies the village of Allenfeld, where relations of the Schaus family lived. --- I have not yet been able to find the parents of Gabriel Schaus. So far I have only hit upon a certain Johann Gabriel Schaus, keeper of a post-house at Eckweiler, who, in 1644, married Maria Magdalena Klein, daughter of the bailiff Theobald Klein from Gemunden, Hunsruck. Four children originated from this marriage from 1652 to 1656.

"On my next occasion I shall study further church reports at the surrounding places, and I am sure to find the birth of Gabriel Schaus. Johann Gabriel Schaus, the above mentioned keeper of the posthouse, was probably his godfather, etc.

Shown below are data titled, Schaus in Eckweiler and Daubach .

(This middle son of Bernard's seems to have moved out of the area and we have no knowledge of where he went.)

Note As I see it this oversight shows a clear unbroken descent from Johannes Schauss born between 1620 & 1630.

The above statement written just above refers to the middle son of Bernard whom I suspicion may be the father of my line. I previously thought we came from Phillip H. /signed/ Harold P. Shouse 1325 Aberdeen St., N. E. Grand Rapids, Mich. 49505 Feb. 14, 1979"
