It offers 36 majors and confers three separate undergraduate degrees: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Music. Gordon also confers master’s degrees in education and music education. In the fall of 2009 the College’s undergraduate enrollment of 1,583 was drawn from 39 states and 26 foreign countries. Approximately 14.3 percent of enrollment— including international students—are of Asian, African American, Hispanic, Native American or non-Caucasian descent. Gordon was founded in Boston in 1889 by a small group of Christians who recognized the need for educated leadership in churches and society. They organized what was first called the Boston Missionary Training Institute. Chief among the founders, and the first president, was the Reverend Dr. Adoniram Judson Gordon, a prominent Boston pastor whose name the school adopted after his death in 1895. Gordon developed into a liberal arts college with a graduate seminary and moved to its present several-hundred-acre North Shore campus in 1955. In 1970 the divinity school was merged with the Conwell School of Theology from Philadelphia to form the new and separate Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary located in South Hamilton, Massachusetts. Barrington College was founded in 1900 as the Bethel Bible Training School in Spencer, Massachusetts, and was later located in Dudley, Massachusetts, and Providence, Rhode Island.

Seth did his newsletter to tell you about them. Our intent undergraduate work at Northwestern and his is that such a newsletter will become an Ph.D. at Harvard. Prior to coming to St. Olaf, annual communication from us to you. he taught at the University of Minnesota at Duluth and the University of Minnesota-Twin We are emailing this newsletter to German Cities. Seth and his wife Christine Howard, majors and German Studies concentrators who works as a speech-language pathologist from the Class of 1989 forward. Faculty news As many of you perhaps know, long-time faculty member LaVern Rippley retired from St. Olaf in August 2017 after fifty years as a member of the St. Olaf faculty. His Seth’s most recent area of scholarship and contributions to the College and to the writing is environmental humanities. Last Department were recognized at a College- Interim, he taught an on-campus wide reception, and we in the department Environmental Studies course on hosted a dinner in his honor.

At the state and national level, the Kochs use their unlimited resources to influence policy to suit their political and personal needs while hurting middle class and working families. The policies they favor include cutting taxes for corporations and the wealthy; reducing and eliminating regulations to protect workers, consumers, and the environment; privatizing and cutting both Social Security and Medicare; and cutting other programs, including Pell Grants for college. For decades, the Kochs and their network of dark money political front groups have been pushing the Koch agenda in New Hampshire — perhaps more than any other state in the country — which has benefitted billionaires like the Kochs at the expense of Granite Staters. In 2016, New Hampshire will continue to be on center stage in American politics with the First In The Nation primary, a top- tier Senate race, marquee Congressional contests, an open governor’s mansion, and a number of hot button issues in the limelight. At the same time, the Koch network has promised to spend nearly $900 million to buy elections for candidates who will do their bidding for them. The Kochs themselves admit they “expect something in return” for the millions they spend propping up their candidates, but for candidates, backing from the Kochs comes with a high price tag.

PHONE: 734.661.2350 FAX: 734.661.2349 www.glca.org January 17, 2019 Dear Writer/Publicist: I invite you to enter the Great Lakes Colleges Association (GLCA) New Writers Awards (NWA) 2020 competition for poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction. In each category, the submitted work must be an author’s first published volume. For this year’s competition the GLCA will accept entries that bear a publication imprint of 2018 or 2019. Winning writers are announced in January 2020. For the 50th year this group of thirteen independent Midwestern colleges will confer recognition on a volume of writing in each of three literary genres: poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction. Publishers submit works on behalf of their authors; the key criterion for this award is that any work submitted must be an author’s first-published volume in the genre. All entries must be written in English and published in the United States or Canada. Judges of the New Writers Award are professors of literature and creative writing at GLCA member colleges. The winning authors tour several of GLCA’s member colleges from which they receive invitations, giving readings, lecturing, visiting classes, conducting workshops, and publicizing their books. Because of this provision of the award, all writers must live in the U.S. or Canada. Each writer receives an honorarium of at least $500 from each college visited, as well as travel expenses, hotel accommodations, and hospitality. By accepting the award the winner is committed to visit member colleges that extend invitations.

Chapel Hill 2020 Approved by: Daniel Kreiss Adam Saffer Adam Sheingate © 2020 Bridget Barrett ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Bridget Barrett: Platforms and Outsiders in Party Networks: The Evolution of the Digital Political Advertising Network (Under the direction of Daniel Kreiss) Scholars seldom examine the companies that campaigns hire to run digital advertising. This thesis presents the first network analysis of relationships between federal political committees (n = 2,077) and the companies they hired for electoral digital political advertising services (n = 1,034) across 13 years (2003–2016) and three election cycles (2008, 2012, and 2016). The network expanded from 333 nodes in 2008 to 2,202 nodes in 2016. In 2012 and 2016, Facebook and Google had the highest normalized betweenness centrality (.34 and .27 in 2012 and .55 and .24 in 2016 respectively). Given their positions in the network, Facebook and Google should be considered consequential members of party networks. Of advertising agencies hired in the 2016 electoral cycle, 23% had no declared political specialization and were hired disproportionately by non-incumbents.
