Dear Sir Or Madam, the Otho Davis Scholarship Foundation (ODSF) Is Dear Sir or Madam, The Otho Davis Scholarship Foundation (ODSF) is proud to announce that it is celebrating its 20th year of philanthropy in memory of Otho Davis, head athletic trainer for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1973-1995. A most appropriate way to celebrate the Foundation’s 20th Anniversary is to honor one of Philadelphia’s most treasured athletes, Eagles Hall of Fame safety Brian Dawkins (#20). This year, the annual scholarship awards dinner will be held on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 5:30 PM at the Sheraton Society Hill in Philadelphia. Please join us as we celebrate Brian, who was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, on August 4, 2018. Brian, who is already in the Eagles Hall of Fame and the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame, had his #20 jersey retired by the Eagles in 2014. Many of Brian’s former teammates will be in attendance as we celebrate the career of one of the most popular athletes in Philadelphia sports history. Over the years, we have had a star-studded guest list for this event, and this year will be no different. Past guests have included NFL head coaches Dick Vermeil, Chip Kelly, Andy Reid, Herm Edwards, Buddy Ryan, and Mike Ditka, as well as Eagles alumni Ron Jaworski, Bill Bergey, Seth Joyner, Mike Quick, Jon Runyan, Clyde Simmons, Jim Murray and myself. We have been joined by current and former Flyers (including Claude Giroux, Sean Courturier, Danny Briere, Brad Marsh, Ed Hospodar, and Doug Crossman), Phillies alumni (including Larry Bowa, Greg Luzinski, Chris Wheeler, and Dave Montgomery), and alumni of the Sixers (including Julius “Dr. J” Erving and John Nash). Through contributions, donations, and fundraisers, the ODSF has awarded 24 scholarships totaling $207,500. This year we will award (2) $20,000 scholarships to graduate students. By becoming a sponsor, you will make a great difference in a young person's life. In 2012, the ODSF began presenting the Dick Vermeil Award, which honors a lifetime achievement in the field of sports. This year, Merrill Reese will accept the award. Merrill has been the radio voice of the Philadelphia Eagles since 1977 and is currently the longest tenured play-by-play man in the NFL. Past recipients of the Dick Vermeil Award include Dr. Vincent DiStefano, Dr. Arthur Bartolozzi, Dr. Peter DeLuca, Dr. Gary Dorshimer, Dr. Lee S. Cohen and Dr. Michael G. Ciccotti. Becoming a sponsor will enable your organization to receive media coverage and acknowledgment. Not only will you be recognized at the banquet but also on our website leading up to and after the awards dinner. In addition, we have had media coverage in the past through local and regional television and radio. You can help fulfill several dreams. Otho's dream that donations to his foundation help deserving students fund their education and also the dreams of our young people for their future careers. Visit our website at www.othodavisfoundation.org for more information about the Otho Davis Scholarship Foundation, or contact ODSF executive director Marie Solano at [email protected]. Philadelphia is a big city, with a small-town heart. Please join us as we remember Otho and help some deserving young people. The Otho Davis Scholarship Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization spearheaded by Otho's friends and family. Since 1999, the organization has been working to raise funds to honor Otho's wishes of establishing a scholarship for aspiring students studying sports medicine, sports marketing, or a related field. We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday November 14, 2018, 5:30pm, at the Sheraton Society Hill, One Dock Street, Philadelphia, Pa. Very truly yours, Harold Carmichael, Trustee & President cc: Jim Solano,Trustee, Vice President Stan Wielgus, Trustee, Treasurer/Secretary Marie Solano-Mascia, Executive Director Duke Davis, Trustee .

  • Nfl Announces Plans to Celebrate 100Th Season
FOR USE AS DESIRED 8/1/19 NFL ANNOUNCES PLANS TO CELEBRATE 100TH SEASON Season-long initiatives to celebrate players, teams, communities and fans; Get ready for a ‘Fantennial’ near you A journey of 100 seasons began with a single step. For the National Football League, that step was made by RALPH HAY, owner of the Canton Bulldogs. Hay’s simple initiative was to invite owners of three other Ohio teams – the Dayton Triangles, Cleveland Indians and Akron Pros – to a meeting at his Canton auto showroom to discuss forming a league. Three issues prompted the meeting: Dramatically rising salaries, players jumping from one team to another following the highest offers, and teams illegally using players still in college. That initial meeting conceived the foundation of the league, originally called the American Professional Football Association, on August 20, 1920. A second step was to schedule another meeting. This time, Hay flexed his vision, writing to invite several other pro teams. Perhaps the most significant letter was to future Pro Football Hall of Famer GEORGE HALAS, the player-coach of the Decatur Staleys and eventual Chicago Bears. At that second meeting in Hay’s showroom, held on September 17, 1920, Halas sat on the running board of a brand-new Hupmobile and, for the first of many important instances, modeled a league-above-team perspective that critically shaped the genesis and longevity of the new organization. Countless steps, strides and leaps later, the NFL embarks on its 100th season when the Atlanta Falcons meet the Denver Broncos in Canton’s Tom Benson Stadium for this year’s Hall of Fame Game.
