Message From the President Dear Members, I find myself in the interesting position of being AGS President. I'm still a bit stunned by the whole thing. AGS is coming off a year that was probably one of the most challenging in its history. There are still ripples of that time to be stilled. They are quieting though. The largest ripple is probably the backlog in the office. This is the most frustrating for the largest block of members. It also creates something of a vicious circle. When the office is behind more phone calls come in about registrations, more rush orders come in and more stamped duplicates are requested. All of which slow regular registrations down even more. The fact that the big splash happened just at the beginning of rush season just added to the problem. This ripple is being brought under control. The office is making amazing progress at being caught up. They were fully six month behind when the move was complete. As I write this they are only about two month behind, probably less by the time you read this. The progress is even more amazing given the number of registrations from the last couple of years being received by the office. There are breeders sending in registrations for not just this year's kids, but for last years and even the year before. It makes an interesting puzzle to figure out who is registered first, so their kids and grandkids can be registered! I believe this ripple will be all smoothed out by the new year, probably earlier. The Board has directed an audit be performed by December. This should put the financial ripple to rest. The committee is working hard to solve the ripples in the judge's area as well. I believe this will be a very active and positive year for AGS. Here's hoping the ripples for the coming year are small ones. LisaJo Helgesen, President AGS

We are very pleased that more members chose to participate in this election. The high number of ballots that did not count are a concern. Please remember that you must put your return address on envelope that you send to the tabulator. Without a return address there is no way for the tabulator to verify your membership. Please also remember that your vote is kept confidential as the inner envelope containing your ballot does not show your name or address. Thank you for participating in your registry. Message from District V - Penny Hamers

Hi, I'd like to introduce myself. I am Penny Hamers and own the Copper Penny Nigerian Dwarf herd in Santa Mar- garita, California. I am one of the directors from district 5. A sincere thank you to those that voted for me. I don’t know all I need to know about AGS, however I got a quick education at the 2004 Nationals this last June. What an experience. Please feel free to contact me and chat or ask any questions you have. I may not know the answers but I know where to find it. I would like to see AGS take a bigger hold in California and will be doing my best to make that happen. AGS will only be as big as the members want to support it to be. Let your voice be heard! As a member, you are AGS. I think this will be a big year as AGS catches up and I’m expecting growing pains. Again, if you have a di- rection you want AGS to take, speak up and let your opinion be known. I hope this kidding season puts that Grand Champion in your pen. And I hope to hear from more of you through the year. Sincerely, Penny Hamers

Message from District III - Sunni Florence Milligan Greetings from Texas! As most of you are probably aware I joined the AGS BoD in January of this year after the resignation of long time director Valerie Ciesynski. I’d like to take a few lines to introduce myself, since this is my first message in the Voice. My name is Sunni Florence Milligan, and along with my mother, Terry Flor- ence, I’ve bred, raised, and shown Nigerian Dwarf Dairy Goats under the herdname Flat Rock Farms since 1987. I’ve been an AGS member for the vast majority of that time. In July I attended my first BoD meeting at the National Convention in Stillwater, Oklahoma. I learned quite a bit, and I believe the BoD had a very productive meeting. Let me assure you, your Directors are working very hard for the betterment of AGS. This has been a pivotal year for the Society, and I believe we will come out stronger and better able to serve our members. I am also serving as the Chairman of the Judges committee, and the Public Relations committee this year. Our committees are hard at work, and already preparing proposals to be presented to the BoD. If you have any questions, or need to contact me please feel free to email me at [email protected], or call 817-270-4883.

2005 National Show

The AGS Board of Directors recently voted to accept a proposal to host the 2005 National Show and Convention. The Proposal comes from the New England Nigerian Dwarf Association (NENDA). The Convention and National show is scheduled for June 20-26, 2005 in West Springfield, MA. More information will be available in the next issue of the VOICE and on the website shortly. NENDA is a very enthusiastic group that is excited about hosting this event. Make plans to attend! THE VOICE OF AGS

Secretary’s Notes

Greetings from the office! We hope that everyone had a wonderful summer and you are getting back into the swing of things this fall. Show season is winding down and I’m sure everyone is eagerly awaiting the next batch of spring kids. Things in the office are finally settling down a bit. We were running only three weeks behind when, as many of you know, William went into the hospital. We thank you for your patience during that time. He is home now and doing well. Our absence from the office pushed the backlog back to 5 weeks again. We are working hard to close that gap and expect to be caught up very soon. Some very common problems we are still seeing in the office are incomplete applications, or applications sent in without registered herd names. In June the board passed a motion that tattoos would only be given out with a registered herd name. You can read the exact wording in the meeting minutes. (also in this issue of the VOICE) Please make sure you register your herd name before trying to register your kids. Some other very important reminders that need to be mentioned are: ♦ When sending in payment via paypal, please remember to indicate what the payment is for (membership, registrations, etc.) and include your membership name or number as well. This can all be placed in the memo section of your paypal e-mail. ♦ Although our web hosting service has been very reliable in the past, the website has been down several times in the past month due to various issues beyond our control. (a major power failure, denial of service attack, and server failure) We apologize for any inconvenience this might have caused anyone. The website should be functioning properly at this time. If you have any questions about the website or need information added to the website please contact our webmaster at: [email protected] ♦ A clarification needs to be made about transfers with an application for registration. When an animal is being registered for the first time and there is a transfer done at the same time, there is a transfer fee. Anytime that the owner is not the original breeder on an application for registration there is a transfer to new owner fee, unless the kid was prenatal. The fee for transfers is $2.50. ♦ Please note that new rates for DHI and One Day Tests will take effect January 1, 2005. These new fees are stated in the 2004 AGS Directors Meeting Minutes. ♦ When sending in prepaid postage, for rush orders, please do not send in pre-metered postage. The zip code origin and date must match the mailing location and date on the returned packet. Please use postage stamps or include the fees for postage ($3.85 for priority, $13.65 for express) and AGS can purchase it for you. ♦ The AGS office cannot accept electronic signatures or photocopies of applications for registration. Please send original signed papers only. ♦ To better serve you AGS has added a dedicated fax line: (830) 535-4561. This line is on and ready to receive your fax at any time, please note there is a $2.00 charge for this service. ♦ Please DO NOT write on or alter any certificate. Transfers and updates are only to be done by the office.

Remember you are AGS! Together we can make this registry the best it can be! Amy Kowalik, AGS Office Manager, Audrey Kowalik, Office Support Staff

Merger Vote Coming Up Did you know that the AGS office has been located in Texas, Nebraska, New York and Virginia over the years? Unfortunately, when some of these moves were made, new corporations were formed and the old corporations were not dissolved. Most recently AGS was incorporated in New York with an office in Virginia. Upon the move to Texas, it was discovered that AGS is still incorporated in Texas. After conversations with state officials in Texas, we are now able to operate under that corporate umbrella. The problem is that we are still left with a corporation in New York. The solution to that problem is to merge the New York corporation with the Texas corporation. This is where the members come in. Under Texas law, a membership nonprofit organization must have the approval of the members prior to undergoing such a merger, even when it is done for housekeeping reasons. In the coming months, we will put together a plan of merger that meets both New York and Texas requirements. That will then go to the membership for a vote. If you have questions regarding this, contact your district director, who can bring them to the organization's attorney for answers. We appreciate your cooperation! CS

Attention: PYGMY BREEDERS/OWNERS At Convention in response to a survey of Pygmy owners done by the Breeds committee, a new policy for accepting NPGA pygmies for re-registration in AGS was approved. Effective December 31, 2004, midnight, AGS will NO longer accept NPGA animals for re-registration in AGS. That date gives AGS Pygmy breeders time to transfer NPGA Pygmies they bring into their herd for new blood or other reasons. Until that date, NPGA animals may be transferred into the AGS herdbooks and shown at AGS Pygmy shows. GN

2004 AGS Convention News

The 2004 Directors Meeting was held in Stillwater, OK June 21-23, 2004 Directors attending were: Penny Hamers, Sunni Milligan, Eddie Fugate, Fred Phillips, Jean New, Sharon Boger, Gayle Nelson, Lisa Jo Helgesen , William Kowalik, Kellye Bussey , Keith Harrell (part of Tue & Wed) Committee Reports Awards Committee The Awards Committee recommended that the winners of the Lincoln Dairy Herd awards be sent their checks and certificates directly after convention.

Breeds/Registration Committee A herd name or farm name may be registered with AGS and this “exact” name shall be used as a prefix with the names of the owner’s animals when registering them in the AGS herd books. An animal’s name shall be limited to 30 letters and spaces including herd prefix. A registered herd name is reserved only as a prefix not a suffix. Names cannot be changed after registration is completed. The animal’s name shall begin with the breeder’s “exact” prefix.

Constitution & By-Laws The following changes/additions to the AGS constitution/by-laws were approved by the board:

• article V, section 2 concerning mail ballots-or a by-law that reads: “In consideration that mail ballots concern matters of enough importance that they need resolution outside of regular board meetings, all mail ballots require a majority vote of the entire board one way or the other to pass/fail”

• addition of a by-law for constitution Article X. “Member is defined as one holding a voting membership in AGS at the time the ballot is proposed. Re: Constitution Article X, to the general membership” (There was some concern that the specific definition of voting member in by-laws Article IV, Sec 4 might be used to define member in Article X and only those with memberships in by Feb 1 would get a ballot. The committee interprets a by-law definition to apply to it’s particular const. article only. This bylaw is to assure that it is not interpreted for any other ballots.

• The words “an informal” in Article VIII Sec 2 of the by-laws be replaced with “a detailed” report.

• Addition to Article IV Sec. 4. BALLOTS: Election results will be sent from the tabulator directly to the Election/Nomination Committee Chair, via either email or USPS mail. Upon receipt the Committee Chair will notify the candidates and the BOD of the election results. Once the winning candidates have been notified and accepted, the membership will be notified via the Discuss AGS list and the VOICE.

• A by-law for Article VII, Sec. 5. be added to state: That a member be defined as one holding a voting membership. Data Management Committee The office has just begun using a new database software program in order to help facilitate improved turnaround time on paperwork, this software will continue to be used until a more permanent solution is recommended by the data management committee and approved by the board.

DHI Committee • An alternate test plan: owner sample with One VT at 60-150 days per doe required. Test plan number is 40. Does would be eligible for their stars, but not an AR star. Does would not be eligible for Lincoln Awards or the Top Ten list. Reason for exclusion - this test plan does not have the reliability of the other test plans due to the lack of monthly supervisor observation of milking (only one observed set of 3 milk weights). Awards are restricted in this test plan since reliability of milk records requires a higher data collection rate.

• Yearly DHIR fees were raised to $15 per herd with the $1 per doe fee to remain the same. Renewal fees would be $10. Those herds renewing in 2005 would pay the renewal fee.

• One day milk test permits will now be $10.00 instead of $5.00. The per doe fee will remain the same. Numerous changes to the wording of the DHI rules were recommended and approved. The DHI Standard Operating Procedures are to be added to the Handbook under DHI rules and procedures. National Show Committee Two host groups presented proposals for hosting the 2005 National Show & Convention. The board felt that the proposal from NENDA needed further refining and clarification. There were no major concerns with the SCODGA proposal other than the fact that it would result in the national show being held in the same state two years in a row. Although these were the only proposals presented as per current AGS National Show Rules, the majority of the board felt that a 3rd party be given the opportunity to prepare and submit a proposal within 30 days. The BOD will vote on a host site at that time. THE VOICE OF AGS

Secretary’s Corner 2004 AGS Convention News

• The Board approved including the sanctions and rosettes for The National Youth Show, should one be held, as part of our contribution to the AGS National Show & Convention.

Scholarship Committee There were no applications submitted for scholarships this year.

Office Procedures Committee The board accepted the Office Procedure Manual proposal as amended with sections sent back to committee for clarifications.

Handbook The board decided due to the high number of errors and the amount of added information that needed to go into the handbook, that they would not be sending out the previously printed version from October and instead would send out new ones with all the additions and corrections in order to give the members the most accurate information possible.

Other actions taken by the board were:

• To remove the minimum height requirement from the pygmy breed standard.

• The board passed a motion to change all breed registration certificates to a standard AGS purple border. They will be phased in as the current supply of certificates for each breed is depleted.

• The board set a member credit limit of $25 stating that: The maximum a requestor (member) can owe AGS is $25. Once a debt of $25 is incurred, no further work shall be processed until the debt is resolved. Orders received for an account flagged for the maximum allowed debit shall be placed in the pending files, and any funds received applied to the balance.

• The judges committee will now be comprised of 2/3 judges and 1/3 other members.

• A classification committee was created to be comprised of 2/3 classifiers and 1/3 other members.

• Tattoo registration is free of charge with a registration of a herd name. Requests for tattoo registration are normally processed with herd name registration but there may be instances when a breeder may for some reason need to change their assigned tattoo. All tattoo assignments are unique to each herd name. This becomes effective July 2004.

• The board decided that the voting record of each Director be included in the VOICE and the files section of the Discuss AGS list.

• A motion was passed to add the descriptive terms of General Appearance from the judges training manual to the scorecard found in the Members hand book so that members could better understand the value of points given to the General Appearance Category.

• Win Notification Cards will no longer be sent out with the show boxes, but instead will be processed and sent from the office.

• In order to better serve the members the office will soon have a dedicated fax line, the number will be added to the website, and published in the VOICE.

• A motion was passed that for this year only the deadline for inclusion in the AGS roster would be June 1. Rosters should be mailed with the next issue of the VOICE. • As per member request classifications will now be done on triplicate forms so that members will have a copy for their own records.

• The fax fee has been changed from $1.00 to $2.00. This fee is per fax, not per page. Stamped duplicates will now be a charged service, and will be $1.00 per stamped duplicate in addition to the regular registration fee. These changes will take effect July 1.

• The majority of the board accepted a proposal from classifier Alice Hall to allow Keith Harrell to become the 4th AGS Classifier. Lisa Jo Helgesen was elected President of AGS and Sharon Boger was elected Vice President of AGS. THE VOICE OF AGS

CLASSIFICATION: WHAT, WHY, HOW? BY Alice Hall, classifier

Keith Harrell of NC was added to the ranks of AGS classifiers this year at a training session during the national AGS meeting in Stillwater, OK. Keith joins classifiers Sandi Liska (AZ), Ray Greer (MO), and Alice Hall (CA). In the 1940's it was common practice for dairy goat herds to be classified by AGS. Several of the larger herds were classified en- tirely and repeatedly. Then the practice became less common and was not used for many years, probably because it can be costly. Now, with more emphasis on artificial insemination, and with a need to know something about the bucks offered, classification is coming back into more frequent use. One way it is being done now to cut costs is to offer a classification seminar. Several breeders gather in one location with the animals they want classified, and then it costs less to pay classifier expenses. It is also common now for exhibitors at a show to hold a classifier who's judging over so classifications can be done the next day, or at least following the show. The problem with both these methods is that there are an abnormal number of very good and excellent scores compared with whole-herd classification. What is classification? Nearly everyone who has dairy goats knows something about what is involved in the show ring, so let's start there for a basis of comparison. In the show ring, the animal is seen as a whole animal, with certain emphasis on aesthetics, or how pretty she looks. In classification, the animal is seen not only as a whole, but also as a collection of parts, some of which may be less than desirable, some acceptable, and some outstanding. In the show ring, an animal is compared with other animals also in the show ring at the same time, or on the same day. In classifica- tion, the animal is compared with two models, the ideal and the average, as defined by the score card. In the show ring, animals are evalu- ated aesthetically, and in classification they are evaluated functionally, how useful are they? In other words, in the show ring, animals are compared with other animals to see which one is the prettiest. In classification, animals are com- pared with an image of the ideal and an image of an average dairy goat to see how it measures up in genetic traits that help its longevity and functional productivity. In the show ring, the graceful, feminine animal might have an advantage in attaining the championship of the day. In classification, the strong, sound animals have the advantage in attaining a high excellent rating, which then becomes part of its permanent record. An excellent animal is one which, in the opinion of the classifier, approaches the ideal. Such an animal is given a score somewhere between 90 and 96. It is highly unusual for an animal to score over 96, and animals should probably not score as high as ninety until they are mature. Yearlings, and usually two-year-olds are not yet mature, so they are not usually classified. A buck must be at least 18 months old and a doe must be a second freshener to be classified. A very good animal [VG], scoring 85-89, is one which is above average in functional, genetic characteristics. In other words, an animal that scores very good is highly desirable, but not as near perfect as the excellent (E) animals. Good plus (+) animals, with a score of 80 to 84, are average. That is, the animal is considered by the classifier to be functionally acceptable. It is not outstanding, but, on the other hand, it is not cull material, either. A good animal (G), 70 to 80, nears the acceptable range, but she is not quite as acceptable as the classifier would like to see, and therefore, a good animal may be considered just slightly below average in functional characteristics. A score of 60 to 69 is given to an animal that ranks fair (F), and such an animal is quite a bit below average or acceptable. It is questionable whether the offspring of animals that classify only fair should be registered. Poor animals score under 60, they are rated with a P, and their registration papers may be pulled. Poor animals have no place in the gene pool of a sound pure breed. A classifier may categorize an animal "out of condition" and not classify it because of that. This would protect the very old and very sick goats from being given low scores, when in their prime, they probably would have deserved much more. The AGS score card is used in classifying an animal in AGS, and since the cards are a little different for bucks and for does, no scores in specific categories will be discussed. Instead, each category will be discussed generally. No category can be given 80 or 90 percent of the points possible if any fault is apparent which impairs function of that part of the animal. General appearance includes stature [tall is better than short except in Pygmies and Nigerians], breed character, and over-all appearance, blending and condition. Particular faults that should be considered in this category are animals that are too small, refined, short [especially in leg bone; again, except the mini breeds]. The general appearance score should be nearly identical in percentage to the total score. Faults to be pin-pointed in the head are heads that are too long, too short, coarse, or if the jaw is over or under-shot. Neck faults include being short, coarse, and thick, with no discrimination against the desirable trait of masculinity in bucks. Coarseness in the shoulders is a major fault in that category, as are winged shoulders and shoulders that are lower than the hips when meas- ured at the withers. Chest faults include being coarse, narrow, weak in the chine, or shallow in the heart girth. Narrow or shallow barrels are faults in that category, as is weakness or roaching in the loin. Thick skin, rough skin and tight skin are all faults unless the classifier can be reasonably certain there’s a management reason for the condition. Things like sunburn affect this category. Rump faults include being too narrow [especially between the pin bones], too steep [either from hips to pins or between the thurls], or too short. Faults of the forelegs include bowed knees, enlarged knees, bucked knees, turned-out legs, and weak pasterns. Rear leg faults are too close, too straight, hocked in, sickle-hocked, or with weak pasterns. Swollen hocks or stifles or knees may not affect the classification score, as these are usually conditions caused by the environment. If the classifier considers that swelling in the stifle, for instance, is caused by lack of width in the flank, then that condition would be scored low. If the swelling seems to be from infection, the classi- fier may overlook it. Faults of the feet include spread toes, turned-out feet, shallow heels, and broken pasterns. Again, the classifier must make a

Continued from page 9 judgment call on whether a poor foot condition is genetic or management-caused. One would affect the score, the other may not. Fore-udder faults are short, bulgy, loose, pocketed, or broken. Rear udder faults are low-set, narrow, pinched, loose, or broken. Teat faults are undesirable size or shape, pointed out, abnormal structure, such as ballooned, inverted, everted, etc. A classifi- cation score card with a zero score on teats has been seen. The teats of the doe had been burned off in a barn fire, but when added in with the other scores, the final score wasn’t too bad. Other udder faults are a tilted udder, floor too low, lack of defined halving, weak floor, broken suspensory ligament, meatiness, scarring, and congestion. A badly lop-sided udder may not affect a classification score, as the classifier would evaluate the “normal” side and ignore the abnormal one. Reproductive faults include any abnormality that may impair fertility, such as hermaphroditism, monorchodism [one testicle only], etc. If an animal contains these kinds of reproductive disqualifications, it should not be classified. Each of these faults noticed is evaluated on whether it is mild enough so that it does not interfere with the animal's function or serious enough to be mentioned. If it is mild, the animal will be at least acceptable in that area, in spite of the fault. If it appears to inter- fere with the normal, productive and especially reproductive functions of the animal, the score will be lowered below the acceptable level. Classification scores are not like show wins. They are not intended to be an aspect to brag about. Instead, classification scores should be used as guidelines to tell a breeder in what direction he should breed. When they are used in artificial insemination, classifica- tion scores should help a prospective semen user to determine what buck to use, especially if the areas of strength and weakness are spelled out. The more animals and herds AGS has classified, the more information will be available for potential breeders and buyers to select from. Perhaps if classification and production testing had continued to be used extensively, as they were fifty years ago, more progress would have been made in dairy goat improvement. THE VOICE OF AGS

Ice Cream Recipes Submitted by Ellen Dill

The crispness of fall is upon us but there are still some very warm days left and what could be more refreshing than a nice big bowl of ice cream?! Here are a few recipes that I've gathered from a variety of places for your enjoyment.

Vanilla Goat's Milk Ice Cream 1 1/2 cups sugar 2 envelopes unflavored gelatin 1/8 tsp salt 8 cups goat's milk 2 beaten eggs 2 tsps vanilla In a large saucepan combine sugar, gelatin, and 1/8 tsp salt. Stir in half of the milk. Cook and stir over medium heat til mixture almost boils and sugar dissolves. Stir about 1 cup of the hot mixture into beaten eggs; return all to saucepan. Cook and stir 2 minutes more. Cool. Add remaining milk and vanilla. Freeze in a 4 or 5 quart ice cream freezer according to manufacturer's directions. Makes about 3 quarts ice cream. ***Chocolate Ice Cream Prepare Vanilla Ice Cream as above, except increase sugar to 2 cups. Add 6 squares (6 ounces) unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled to gelatin mixture after heating. Beat with rotary beater. Continue as directed.

Fresh Fruit Goat's Milk Ice Cream 1 c. sliced apricots or peaches or whole berries 1/2 c. sugar or to taste 3 tablespoons lemon juice 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 cups goat's milk In a large bowl mash fruit with sugar. Add lemon juice and salt. Stir well. Add milk. Transfer to ice cream maker. Freeze according to manufacturer's instructions.

Strawberry-Rhubarb Goat's Milk Ice Cream 1 cup sliced fresh rhubarb 3/4 cup honey 3 1/2 cups sliced fresh strawberries 1/2 cup maple syrup 2 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1 1/2 cups goat's milk 1 (12 oz) can evaporated milk 1 tsp vanilla In medium saucepan over medium heat, combine rhubarb and honey; cook 15 minutes or til rhubarb is soft. Puree in food processor or blender with half of strawberries. Spoon into medium bowl. Add remaining strawberries to food processor or blender along with the maple syrup and lemon juice. Pulse to coarsely chop. Stir into rhubarb mixture; cover and chill. Stir in goat's milk, evaporated milk and vanilla; pour into ice-cream maker. Freeze according to manufacturer's instructions. Have a great fall!
