was a very busy year and I am proud of what we have accomplished together. Our 2015 focus remains the same – to approach each day concentrating on membership services and growing the game.

Highlights include:

Player Development: Activities held to support player development included PGA Junior League, Drive, Chip & Putt, and Get Golf Ready programming. In conjunction with the NCGA, we had another successful Junior Tour of Northern California (JTNC) season that included over 700 student athletes competing in 30 events over the spring, summer and fall months. Tournaments: the tournament committee and staff put together a tournament schedule that not only identifies our top players and player of the year, yet allows all Section members a playing opportunity with different formats that enable everyone to be competitive. Communications: One of our goals was to enhance our communications program. As such, we redesigned the website, e-news and social media platforms. As a result, we are seeing better click through rates, which tells us more of you are engaging and finding the information valuable. Sponsorship: We launched NCPGA Connect so that return on investment, hospitality, and philanthropy are wrapped into packages designed to stimulate sponsor relations with outside industry partners. As a result we successfully transitioned CIG into our first six-figure partner. We encourage our members to consider CIG for their insurance needs. Membership: We know PGM programming is challenging, so we created an Apprentice Mentorship Committee designed to help apprentices through their PGM programming. We hope you take advantage of this great resource and develop some meaningful connections with other members. NCPGA Foundation: We are proud of the successful 8th Annual The Langley fundraising event, where proceeds benefitted the many charities the NCPGA Foundation supports. The Foundation also provides resources for you as an NCPGA Member so please make sure to explore these options. We had a great time at the Charity Golf Challenge, a one-day marathon where participants played as much golf as possible in support of their favorite charity. In September, we launched PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) Northern California, a free clinic that introduces golf to all Veterans in order to enhance their mental, social, physical, CHRIS THOMAS, and emotional well-being. PGA Executive Director & COO of the Northern We are looking forward to an exciting 2016 as we have secured a full slate of activities including California Section of tournaments, education and meetings. Our Tournament Committee continues to be one of the most active, dealing with numerous issues and continuing to work towards a tournament program that offers competitive, social and networking opportunities. The committee agreed to extend the NCPGA Professional Championship to 54 holes, developed a subcommittee to review the Player of the Year (POY) point structure, launched a new PGA California Cup between top players in Northern and Southern California PGA, and expanded to include senior tees at the NCPGA Team Championship. In addition, we determined that the Pro-Scotch and Cal State Club should play for the same purse, we revised eligibility for the Senior/Junior Championship to allow apprentices to play, and we determined not to allocate POY points when Pro-Series events are reduced to nine holes. OMEGA became a Player of the Year sponsor, and their $10,000 in funds were distributed.

A special thank you to the 2015 Tournament Committee – Shawn McEntee, Stuart Smith, Mitch Lowe, Chase Stigall, Dave Carr, Joe Dolby, Shawn Kelley, Don Winter, Michael Merritt, Steve Watanabe, and Jim McGrath – who contributed their time and energy for the betterment of the NCPGA Tournament Program. BAY AREA CHAPTER John Vest, PGA President

The 2015 Bay Area Chapter Board of Directors consisted of President John Vest, Vice President Jeff DeBenedetti, Secretary David Solomon and At-Large Members, Scott Steelman, Aaron Wells and Mike Robason. Chris Conway handles the marketing and communications for the Chapter. There were 494 Professionals and apprentices. I would first of all like to personally thank Ruby Hill Golf Club, Wente Golf Course and Las Positas Golf Course for hosting events this year. The staff at each property went above and beyond to make sure we had a terrific event. The focus did not change from past years, we wanted to create a fun golf experience as well as provide networking and education for our fellow golf professionals. We had four events scheduled throughout the year and unfortunately had to cancel one due to lack of participation. The other three events were well attended and we hope to build on those going into next year. Moving into 2016, the Chapter plans to take a similar approach to the events, hosting 4-5 per year and also having our 1st Annual Chapter Championship. We also plan to be very active with apprentice outreach and mentoring with additional support from the Section. We already have some great courses lined up for next year, so please be sure to join us for a great 2016 season!

NORTH COAST CHAPTER Mark Wotherspoon, PGA

The 2015 North Coast Chapter Board of Directors consists of: President Mark Wotherspoon; Vice President/Secretary/Treasurer Greg Bean; Education Chair Brent Stone; Tournament Chair Rex Denham; and Ted Mattila, Chapter Liaison for Employment & Special Awards Committee. There were 22 PGA Professionals and apprentices.

Even though the Chapter is small, we had a successful 2015. At the Annual Meeting we identified our two greatest challenges for participation in events: 1) geographical distance and 2) age & ability differences. With nearly four hours of driving distance separating our courses, which encompass Humboldt County to Lake County, it is a challenge to get consistent participation. Last year we experimented with pro-am formats and began holding events on a Monday and Tuesday. The goal was to reduce the number of times PGA Professionals needed to leave facilities and travel to events. The Chapter received great feedback on this format and we will implement this format again in 2016. Also, our Chapter PGA Professionals vary greatly in age and golfing ability. In the past, Chapter tournaments offered both a regular and senior division, providing the chance to win from dual purses. Unfortunately, the younger players did not have the advantage of twice the money and the older pros with higher handicaps were still at a disadvantage.

On behalf of the North Coast Chapter, I would like to thank NCPGA Executive Director & COO Chris Thomas, NCPGA Past- President Len Dumas and PGA of America Employment Consultant Carol Pence for attending our Semi-Annual Meeting. We appreciate their commitment to travel to the North Coast and provide updates on Section and National business.

NORTH STATE CHAPTER David Knox, PGA President

The 2015 North State Chapter Board of Directors consisted of President David Knox, Vice President Kevin Earl, Secretary Mike Galli, Tournament Chair Jim Stewart and Junior Golf Committee Co-Chairs Jacob Marta and Patrick Shaw. There were 175 PGA Professionals and apprentices.

The mission of the North State Chapter is to elevate the standards of PGA Professionals through professional development, education, tournament competition and sharing of best practices. We believe in growing the game with players of all ages and promoting the enjoyment and involvement of the game of golf in our area.

Reflecting on 2015, we held a Semi-Annual Meeting & Golf at Peach Tree Golf & Country Club, Chapter Championship at Catta Verdera Country Club, and the Annual Meeting at Sierra View Country Club. Mike Galli was elected the President at the 2015 Annual Meeting.

In 2016 the Chapter plans to support Section Player Development efforts and goals and begin building a strong apprentice mentoring structure. Lastly, in order for the Chapter to be successful we need our Chapter PGA Professionals to get involved and participate. To stay informed and connected to Chapter activities and events, be sure to join the Chapter Facebook Group as well as read monthly issues of NSC eNews.

SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY CHAPTER Rich Howarth, PGA President

The 2015 San Joaquin Valley (SJV) Chapter Board of Directors consists of President Rich Howarth, Vice President Jeff Palmer, Secretary Travis Moore, Past President Joe Wisocki, and At-Large Members Kenny Collins, Greg Fedderson, and Doug Hanson.

This past year the San Joaquin Valley Chapter focused on increasing membership and participation of events. Five tournaments and two meetings were enjoyed by the membership. We are currently at 160 PGA Professionals and apprentices. We look forward to a continued increase of membership and participation in 2016. Currently we are setting dates for the 2016 calendar.

We will continue to focus on education and professional development for our members through additional meetings and utilizing the resources afforded to us through the NCGPA office and the golf industry.

I would like to thank the facilities that hosted a SJV Chapter event and the host PGA Golf Professionals. I would also like to thank the NCPGA Section staff for all their support and hard work.

SIERRA NEVADA CHAPTER Rick Christensen, PGA President

The 2015 Sierra Nevada Chapter Board of Directors consists of: President Rick Christensen, Vice President/Scholarship Chairman Ward Sutton, Secretary & Tournament Chair Greg Wenzel, Awards Chairman Fred Elliott, Tournament Chairman Scott Bolen and At-Large Directors Rick Vaughan, Zach Jonas and Gus Jones. There were 143 PGA Professionals and apprentices.

The Sierra Nevada Chapter had a fantastic year with many great events and achievements. Our Chapter conducted five board meetings and four educational seminars during the year, providing leadership and support to our Chapter members.

The Chapter was fortunate to host a qualifying event for the Drive, Chip & Putt Championship this last summer. A special thank you is extended to Jason Brustad and John Hermans from Montreux Golf & Country Club for serving as a host facility and helping more than 130 participants in their quest to reach the finals at Augusta National in April 2016. With the support of Shelly Godeken-Wright and the Fred and Judy Alexander Foundation, the Sierra Nevada Chapter again conducted the Fred and Judy Alexander Golf Day at Eagle Valley Golf Course in early May. This one-day event exposed 600 children and parents to the game and showed them what a great family activity golf is. As a Chapter, we had seven clubs participate in the PGA Junior Golf League in 2015. Somersett G&CC, Thunder Canyon GC, Sierra Sage GC, Washoe GC, Carson Valley, Hidden Valley, and Montreux fielded teams in the round-robin golf event. The club matches were a huge success and our Chapter added a secondary league to include the Truckee courses in 2015.

Stuart Smith from Somersett Golf & Country Club captured the 2015 Trifecta by winning the Chapter Match Play, Stroke Play, and Player of the Year. Mike Paul of Washoe Golf Club captured the Senior Division title in the Stroke Play Championship. Lastly, the Amateur Team was victorious over the Professional Team at the 44th Brooks Park Competition. Special recognition goes out to Chris Detsh of Genoa Lakes Golf Club and Michael Obendorf for reaching PGA membership in 2015.

Northern California PGA - 2015 Annual Review 37 2015 DIVISION ANNUAL REPORTS

Senior Division

Al Weinhold, PGA President, NCPGA Senior Division, American Golf

Our 2015 season got off to a great start at Rancho Murieta Country Club in January this year. In all we had eight Pro-Pro events, and the fields for the most part remained fairly strong. Our major events in both the Senior Division and Super-Seniors were successful thanks to the dedication of our Board of Directors and Tournament Committee. A special thank you goes to Mike Cook for his work on the Tournament Committee this year. The Senior Division is indebted to our host clubs, their members and staffs who allowed us to play some of the best golf courses in Northern California.

All members of the Senior Division of the NCPGA feel a strong sense of loyalty and gratitude for the tremendous support we receive from our sponsors. I urge all members of our Section to write a note to them expressing your gratitude and whenever possible support them and their products and services. Our sponsors include:

CIG Insurance · Club Car · Eldorado Resort Casino · Golf Insurance Services · Hole-in-One U.S.A. John Beardon with Golfpride · OMEGA · UCI Construction

We congratulate Shawn McEntee on repeating (again) as the Senior Division Player of the Year Award. Shawn won several Pro-Pro events again this year. Congratulations also go to Glen Stubblefield for being the Super Senior Player of the Year. Glen also had several wins this year including the Super-Senior Stroke Play Championship.

I would like to thank all senior golf professionals who supported the 2015 events and I encourage you to continue your support of senior golf in the Northern California Section.

A special thanks to outgoing Board Members Mitch Thomas and John Abendroth. I will also be leaving after three years on the board. I welcome our newly elected directors Glen Stubblefield, Fred Elliott, and Walter Thompson. Their expertise and enthusiasm will play a big part in the success of the Senior Division for years to come. 2015 DIVISION ANNUAL REPORTS

Assistant Apprentice Division Michael Merritt, PGA Apprentice President, NCPGA AA Division

2015 was another strong year for the Assistant Apprentice Division. There was a slight increase in partici- pation this year compared to 2014. This year also provided some of the strongest competition to date.

PGA Apprentice Brian Thompson from The Olympic Club earned Player of the Year honors. Brian had an amazing year; he captured the Match Play Championship by defeating Craig Kilcoyne of Diablo Creek GC in the finals at The Preserve Golf Club. Brian also finished in a tie for second at the Assistant’s Championship to Jared Becher of Washoe County GC at Valley Hi Country Club. In addition, Brian also won the Medal Play 5 at Sierra View Country Club, finished runner-up two other times, and only had one finish outside the top 10 all year.

From a participation standpoint, the numbers increased slightly from 2014 as 34 competitors joined the Tournament Players Program and averaged 27.25 players per event, up from 24.5 the previous year. The quality of play increased along with it and we look forward to another successful year.

To cap off the successful season the Division’s Assistant-Apprentice Cup Team took home the North/South Assistant-Apprentice Cup at Hunter Ranch Golf Course. They beat Southern California 16-8 and put on an exhibition of terrific play during the singles matches by winning 9.5 of the 12 points. This is the first time the cup has come home to Northern California in five years.

In closing, the division wants to thank our sponsors and facilities that opened their doors to us. The division wants to thank our sponsors Global Tour Golf, Mizuno, OMEGA, and Titleist. The division also wants to thank the facilities Sequoyah CC, Spring Creek G&CC, Corral de Tierra CC, Tehama GC, The Preserve GC, Napa Valley CC, Half Moon Bay GL, Valley Hi CC, Sierra View CC, and Palo Alto Hills G&CC. Without the generosity of these sponsors and facilities, none of our success this year would be possible so thank you.

The Women’s Division had a growth spurt in 2015 with new members and apprentices. We are looking forward to new ideas to grow our division and more participation in 2016. We encourage participation in the Women’s Division Committee and would welcome new members to the committee.

The 2015 Women’s Cup matches were held October 11th and 12th at Carmel Valley Ranch in Carmel. The NCPGA team played hard but was defeated by the WGANC and PWGA team. The NCPGA Cup team had three new and enthusiastic members this year. We look forward to taking the cup back next year at Carmel Valley Ranch.
