They chose what the locals referred to as ‘Victorian Rules’ and gave birth to the Brisbane Australian Football Club. In 1868-69 there were four clubs – Brisbane, the Volunteer Artillery, Brisbane Grammar School and the Civil Service - and in 1870 an Ipswich team joined, necessitating an overnight journey on a steamer for matches. 1879 The Queensland Football Association (QFA) was formed to administer a game flourishing in the Brisbane/Ipswich area. 1883 Queensland sent delegates to the Inter-Colonial Football Conference where the Australian Football Council was formed. At the time Queensland boasted more than 300 teams. 1884 Queensland played its first interstate match, losing to New South Wales 3-16 to 7-10 (behinds were recorded in the scores at the time but did not actually count until 1897). 1885 Australian football was the first-choice code of the grammar schools in Queensland, with Ipswich Grammar beating Toowoomba Grammar at North Ipswich in 1885 before catching an overnight train to play Brisbane Grammar the following day. 1888 Queensland attracted more than 5000 people to the Brisbane Exhibition Ground for a match against VFL club Melbourne, prompting ‘Wikipedia’ to record that ‘by the 1880’s Australian football was the most prominent football code in the state”. 1890 South Melbourne visited Queensland to play Brisbane, Ipswich and Queensland 1903 On 29 July 1903 the Queensland Football League (QFL) was formed. 1904 On 18 June 1904 at Queen’s Park in the Brisbane Botanical Gardens the first premiership game was played. This gave a revival to a sport which had stagnated somewhat through the 1890’s after independent school headmasters in 1887 adopted ‘rugby football’ as their preferred code by a one-vote majority. The decision was reportedly influenced by the then recent creation of a Queensland-based governing body for rugby, and strong resistance to the use of the word "Victorian" in the name of the sport. The first premiership was shared by Norths, Souths and Wests. 1905 Games were first played at the Brisbane Cricket Ground (Gabba).

E-Footy RECORD 31st May 2008 Issue 9 Editorial with Marty King AFL AND AFLPA SET TO MOVE ON NEW ALCOHOL POLICY It’s terrifi c to see the AFL and the AFL Players Association working collaboratively to formulate a new policy on responsible alcohol consumption in the football environment. They are seeking feedback from each of the 16 AFL clubs, together with key national drug and alcohol experts, before framing a policy with guidelines that all AFL clubs and associated bod- ies like AFL Queensland can use to develop their own. This comes after a lot of background work was done over almost two years and the AFL Com- mission received a full briefi ng. The AFL, the Players’ Association and the AFL clubs understand that quite clearly that they have a responsibility to promote responsible drinking within the AFL and among the 16 clubs, the players and staff. But it’s not just about the elite level. The same will apply at the grassroots level and we at AFLQ will look to partner with the League on this important initiative. The guidelines within the AFL Framing Policy will provide a framework for AFL clubs and asso- ciated bodies to assist them in developing their own individual club responsible alcohol policies. The AFL Framing Policy lists a set of objectives for players and club staff, including the devel- opment of approaches for responsible consumption, effective pathways for treatment of alco- hol-related problems, creating responsible drinking cultures and using player welfare oriented and education-based approaches to promote responsible alcohol consumption.

To use another overblown metaphor, clubs are also the essential fabric out of which the rich, variegated tapestry of the game’s history has been woven.

  • ADELAIDE CROWS BERNIE VINCE (Mid) $381,800 Having Played in the SANFL Last Week, Vince Is Likely to Be One of a Host of Inclusions for Adelaide This Round
ADELAIDE CROWS BERNIE VINCE (Mid) $381,800 Having played in the SANFL last week, Vince is likely to be one of a host of inclusions for Adelaide this round. He hasn’t played at AFL level since Round 5 and has averaged 87 points per match from his four appearances this season. CHRIS KNIGHTS (Fwd) $320,900 Knights’ form away from home this season has been far less convincing compared to that at AAMI Stadium. He averages 23 fewer points per match interstate compared to home – the second-worst differential of anyone that has played all nine games at Adelaide this year. • No Sign of Home Sickness Get Ready to Pounce!
CHAMPION/DATA/ISSUE 16 Hi and welcome to the sixteenth edition of the Fantasy Freako’s rave for 2011. We dodged a bullet last round with news that Gary Ablett’s knee injury isn’t as bad as first thought. He’s now an outside chance to face Richmond this week, which would relieve the thousands of coaches that traded him in last round. Enjoy this week’s rave and good luck to everyone for the upcoming round. NO SIGN OF HOME SICKNESS GET READY TO POUNCE! It’s one thing to perform on your home deck, but to do it away from With most of us close to finalising our sides, it’s vital that we bring home as well is an added bonus. With interstate travel a key component in the right player’s at the right price. Looking at the approximate for every AFL player, looking at player’s that fire on their travels has breakevens for this round, Drew Petrie is one player to keep a close eye proven to be an interesting exercise. For the purpose of this analysis, only those that have played in more than one match have been included, on in the wake of his dismal performance against Collingwood, where which explains why Travis Cloke doesn’t appear with his 136 points, as he finished with a season-low 24 points. Gary Ablett should always be his game against Sydney in Round 14 has been his only interstate trip. a target, and the little master will need to produce something special against Richmond this week, if indeed he actually plays, to keep his If we look at the best performers across the season, it’s no surprise that price.

  • Afl Queensland
PINEAPPLE HOTEL CUP E-FOOTY RECORD ROUND 12 E-Footy RECORD 28th June 2008 Issue 12 Editorial with Marty King AFL QUEENSLAND: STRICT ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY ON RACIAL VILIFICATION It disappoints me to have to remind people that the AFL and AFL Queensland has a strict zero tolerance policy on racial vilifi cation. There have been a couple of unsavoury incidents lately, spread across the fi rst and second divisions of the State League competition, which are simply unacceptable. Under no circumstances will this sort of behavior be tolerated because there is no place for this sort of thing in our game, and AFL Queensland will do whatever it takes to ensure that the perpetrators are suitably reprimanded. This is a cornerstone of what State League football is all about. It is a family-oriented competition which should operate in an environment of respect and responsibility. AFLQ is no different to the AFL, which prides itself on setting behavioural standards that are benchmarks for the general society. It is why the AFL implements and takes very seriously things like the Code of Conduct, and general standards that relate to racial and religious vilifi cation and responsible consumption of alcohol. It is imperative that these values are upheld right across the competition, and so I appeal to all involved with AFL Queensland to do the right thing and to speak up if you are witnesses to inappropriate behavior. The overwhelming majority of people do the right thing all the time. They come to the football with their family or friends, they enjoy the contest and the atmosphere, they barrack for their team in good-natured fun, and they conduct themselves appropriately.
