The possibilities shot up out of the ground from before me like Milton's Pandemonium from the soil of hell. Of course, this assignment ultimately turned out to be much less intimidating and filled with demons than that, but at the time, it felt as though it would be. When you're an English major like I am, your choices are simultaneously extremely numerous and severely restricted, mostly by my inability to write convincingly or sufficiently about most topics. However, after much deliberation and agonizing, I realized that something I am good at is writing about film.

We will have more forthcoming from other members of the department, I’d hope next week, to get you through the exam period and beyond. We hope you find stuff here to get you through the days and nights and days and nights and days and nights. We are all in this together, so feel free to come up with lists (on your own, or even better, get together digitally and socialize) of works you think faculty, admin, and techs ought to be watching. • Wmc Investigation: 10-Year Analysis of Gender & Oscar
WMC INVESTIGATION: 10-YEAR ANALYSIS OF GENDER & OSCAR NOMINATIONS womensmediacenter.com @womensmediacntr WOMEN’S MEDIA CENTER ABOUT THE WOMEN’S MEDIA CENTER In 2005, Jane Fonda, Robin Morgan, and Gloria Steinem founded the Women’s Media Center (WMC), a progressive, nonpartisan, nonproft organization endeav- oring to raise the visibility, viability, and decision-making power of women and girls in media and thereby ensuring that their stories get told and their voices are heard. To reach those necessary goals, we strategically use an array of interconnected channels and platforms to transform not only the media landscape but also a cul- ture in which women’s and girls’ voices, stories, experiences, and images are nei- ther suffciently amplifed nor placed on par with the voices, stories, experiences, and images of men and boys. Our strategic tools include monitoring the media; commissioning and conducting research; and undertaking other special initiatives to spotlight gender and racial bias in news coverage, entertainment flm and television, social media, and other key sectors. Our publications include the book “Unspinning the Spin: The Women’s Media Center Guide to Fair and Accurate Language”; “The Women’s Media Center’s Media Guide to Gender Neutral Coverage of Women Candidates + Politicians”; “The Women’s Media Center Media Guide to Covering Reproductive Issues”; “WMC Media Watch: The Gender Gap in Coverage of Reproductive Issues”; “Writing Rape: How U.S. Media Cover Campus Rape and Sexual Assault”; “WMC Investigation: 10-Year Review of Gender & Emmy Nominations”; and the Women’s Media Center’s annual WMC Status of Women in the U.S.

Short List: Features and Short List: Shorts each curate a selection of nonfiction films that the festival’s programming team considers to be among the year’s strongest contenders for Oscars and other awards. For the first time, the Short List: Features will vie for juried awards in four categories: Directing, Producing, Cinematography and Editing, and a Best Director prize will also be awarded in the Short List: Shorts section. The festival also announced the launch of a new section, Winner’s Circle, highlighting films that have won top prizes at international festivals, but might fly below the radar of American audiences. Michael Apted and Martin Scorsese, the two recipients of DOC NYC’s previously announced Visionaries Lifetime Achievement Awards, will also have their latest documentary films screened: 63 Up and Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese, respectively. The festival also announced the second year of its 40 Under 40 list of young rising stars in the documentary community, co-presented by Topic Studios. “Today’s announcements of the DOC NYC Short Lists, Winner’s Circle and 40 Under 40 showcase a tremendous breadth and depth of talent,” said festival Artistic Director Thom Powers. “We’re excited to bring New York audiences to some of the year’s best films and showcase the future of the documentary field.” AMPAS members can email [email protected] to register for a Short List Pass to gain free admission to Short List, Winner’s Circle and Lifetime Achievement screenings; as well as to the panel discussions for Short List: Features (Fri, Nov.
