CLUSTER 5 - and Planer

Jointer

PREPARATION (what you will need) Eye Protection (mandatory) Fibrous stock 6” x 24” (consider stock w/ defects) Hearing Protection (optional Digital angle cube Check level of two tables (infeed & outfeed) Straight edge Push stick - push block

Introduction to the Jointer

The jointer is one of the most used machines and is designed for specific uses. Jointing cuts or edge jointing are made to the edge of the work piece. Controls 1. Two-step power switch 2. Infeed table: depth control adjustment (adjust to 1/32” or 1`/16”) 3. Outfeed table: Maintenance adjust only 4. Helical cutter heads 5. : adjust for material width & square fence to table. 6. Cutter head safety guard. Safety 1. Review story board before starting operation. 2. Check the fence to be sure it is square with the infeed table (use digital angle cube) 3. Check the cutter head guard, be sure it is operating properly 4. Check depth of cut 5. Be sure the push stick is available, Do not run work pieces over the jointer that are less than 3 inches wide without using a push stick. 6. Joint fibrous material only (no , MDF or ). 7. Maximum depth of cut on any one pass is 1/16” 8. Keep the material tight against the fence (use feather board) 9. Keep even pressure on stock, down on the table, against the fence and forward, don't use excessive force 10. Always maintain your balance (“shuffle”) 11. When finished turn off power. Never leave a machine until it comes to a complete stop.. 12. Minimum sizes: Length - 8”

Width – ¾” Thickness – ½”

Operations Demonstration

1. Adjust fence (width & square) 2. Adjust depth of cut (in-feed table only) 3. Check direction of grain on solid piece 4. Perform jointing operation on one edge 5. Complete cut, shut off the machine and clean the area.

Student Demonstration

Each student will perform the following: 1. Adjust fence 2. Adjust depth of cut 3. Check direction of grain on solid piece 4. Perform jointing operation on one edge 5. Complete cut, shut off the machine and clean the area.

Planer

PREPARATION (what you will need) Eye Protection (mandatory) 18" – 24” length of fibrous material Hearing Protection (optional)

Introduction to the Planer

The Planer is a machine with a set of rotating blades mounted in the upper body of the machine and a base, which allows for the wood to be fed through evenly. It can be adjusted for various thickness of wood by raising or lowering the upper body. This is accomplished by rotating the control knob on the side of the machine. The wood to be fed into the planer should be reasonably flat on at least one side. Use material that is longer than the finished piece you will be using expect snipe at the end(s) of the board.

Controls

Point out and explain controls to students

1. Power Switch 2. Blast Gate 3. Cutter elevation control wheel for indexing (critical) Safety 1. Review story board before starting operation 2. Always wear eye and hearing protectors. 3. Wear proper apparel. No loose clothing 4. Have help when running long boards through the planer. 5. Keep work area clean. 6. When finished turn off the power. Never leave a machine until it comes to a complete stop. 7. Take multiple light cuts. Never take off more than 1/16" at a time. 8. Do not attempt to force material through the planer 9. Use new material only. 10. Minimum sizes: length -10” width – ¾” thick – ½”

Operations Demonstration

The instructor will demonstrate the following:

1. Index planer to material thickness (critical) 2. Open blast gate 3. Turn on machine 4. Align wood for grain, as appropriate 5. Feed material thru planer 6. Examine for “snipe”. 7. Reset planer to remove another 1/32” of material (max. 1/4” turn) 8. Turn off machine 9. Close blast gate

Student Demonstration

Have each student perform the following: 1. Index planer to material thickness (critical) 2. Open blast gate 3. Turn on machine 4. Align wood for grain, as appropriate 5. Feed wood thru planer 6. Examine for “snipe”. 7. Reset planer to remove another 1/32” of material (max. 1/4” turn) 8. Turn off machine 9. Close blast gate
