In Our Song Book by Ed Wicks

TWO NEW SONGS – “HE CARES”

Before the new 2015 Song Book, we did not have in our books any full songs that dealt with the theme “God cares for us”. Many songs had incidental references to the topic and in the chorus

sections of the last three editions we find this chorus: God will take care of you Through every day, o'er all the way, He will take care of you, God will take care of you.

Now, in our new Song Book we have the full song (at #5), all five verses, from which the above chorus was taken.

The hymn is somewhat repetitious. If one sang all five verses with the chorus after each, one would sing “God (or He) will take care of you” 25 times, but this does not detract from the fundamental message that has made the hymn well known throughout the world of Christian hymn singing.

The hymn was written in 1904 by Civilla Durfee Martin (1866 –1948), a Canadian by birth (Jordan Falls, Shelbourne County, Nova Scotia) who immigrated to the United States and married a Baptist minister.

The hymn is more or less a family project rather than the work of just the author. Once, when the Reverend Mr. Martin was scheduled to be a guest preacher at an out-of-town church, his wife became ill and he was pondering cancelling his engagement. To this, his son asked of him “Father, don’t you think that if God wants you to preach today, He will take care of mother while you are away?” Mr. Martin indeed preached as promised that Sunday and returned home to find his wife much improved. He also learned she had written a poem inspired by their son’s question and by the Scripture text found at 1 Peter 5:7 (KJV): “Casting all your care upon him; for He careth for you”. Mr. Martin wrote the music to his wife’s text that evening.

These verses (1, 3 and 5) will serve to illustrate the thoughts of the hymn: Be not dismayed whate'er betide, All you may need he will provide, No matter what may be the test, God will take care of you God will take care of you God will take care of you Beneath his wings of love abide, Trust Him, and you will be satisfied Lean, weary one, upon His breast, God will take care of you. God will take care of you. God will take care of you.

Mrs. Martin wrote one other well-known gospel song (not in our Song book) on the “He cares” theme. It contains the words “His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me”

The second new song in the 2015 Song Book on the theme “He cares” can be found at Song #533. This song starts each verse with the question “Does Jesus care?” (when my heart is pained; when my way is dark: when I‘ve tried and failed: when I’ve said goodbye to the dearest on earth to me). And each question gets answered with ringing words of assurance in the refrain: Oh, yes, He cares. I know He cares, His heart is touched with my grief; When the days are weary, the long nights dreary, I know my Saviour cares.

The hymn was written in 1901 by one Frank Edward Graeff (1860-1919), a Methodist pastor in Pennsylvania. Ottawa Citadel Contact Page 4 xxxxxxxue for security purposes.) Sunday Messages for the Next Five Months During the fall and early winter session, Captains Arkell provided the Corps with an outline of the Sunday Sermon themes and topics. This was helpful to the Band and Songsters, Worship Team, Soloists and others who wished to do some pre-reading of Scripture on the same themes. Although it is not quite completed through the month of June, there is still sufficient information to make it worthwhile to the various groups listed above to provide a guide for selection of music and for other purposes.

UPDATE on BUILDING ISSUES

The Building Advisory Committee met on Thursday, January 10th led by its chairman, David Lapp. The following summary is a brief description of a lengthy and productive meeting: 1. Outside/Grounds maintenance 2018 Projects 1.1 HV/AC Maintenance Review – Request for Services Current service contract is up for renewal March 15, 2018. We will tender for the new term of this service. (David Lapp has drafted a List of Services and a message to bidders.) 1.2 Snow Clearing Maintenance Review In general, the snow clearing is what we requested. There is concern, however, with the excessive amount of salt being used. 1.3 Roof and Water Damage The roofer inspected the roof and advised that there was no evidence of roofing failure. He has re-caulked some of the flashing as a precaution but is quite certain that water has entered through the HV/AC units on the roof. Albert has begun a long-term replacement of damaged or missing ceiling tiles. We will continue to monitor the situation. 1.4 Damage to the Block Wall near the Dishwasher David Holland has checked the panel behind the dishwasher as well as the inspection panel at the foot of the dishwasher but found no evidence of water. It is possible that the water is coming in around the kitchen windows and running into the wall cavity – another matter to monitor. 1.5 Outside Security Discussion Two LED light fixtures have been acquired courtesy of Waterman Electric. These fixtures will be installed on the south-west corner of the building which will illuminate the cross and the dark area near the garbage bins. 2 Interior Retrofitting and Maintenance 2018 Projects 2.1 Sanctuary Upgrades and Retrofitting The BAC will be seeking design options for the podium, side tables and the Mercy Seat. A custom cabinet-maker will be contacted to visit our building and discuss options with the CO and CSM. 2.2 Window Replacement Discussion of the south wall and kitchen windows replacement was deferred to the next meeting . 2.3 Kitchen Area Needs Upgrading of the kitchen facilities to bring them up to current code requirements will be a huge undertaking – probably in the order of $150 K. Pricing of new appliances could be undertaken once a strategy is adopted for the project. 2.4 Fire/Emergency Evacuation Plan Review At the instruction of Divisional Headquarters, work has been initiated on updating Ottawa Citadel’s Fire Plan. In the short term, an updated floor plan will be posted around the building identifying the shortest means of egress, location of fire extinguishers, alarm pulls and fire panel. The purchase and installation of a key lock box will be considered. 3. Officers’ Quarters 2018 Projects 3.1 Basement Renovations Discussion – windows, bathroom. bedroom Lengthy discussion took place as initial thoughts were exchanged about what would be entailed to build two bedrooms and a bathroom in the basement. The entire current basement would have to be gutted. The floor would have to be broken up for the plumbing and windows cut into the cement walls and then new interior walls erected. All of this would be costly and still might not meet the needs. This lead to the possibility of selling the house. It has been upgraded enough that it could be sold for a market price. It was decided to consult a Christian realtor who could help us to realistically consider our options. 3.2 Moving or Replacing Backyard Shed Decision Deferred until next meeting. 3.3 Roof Repairs and Maintenance Discussion Roof appears to be okay. Continue to monitor. 3.4 Kitchen Corner Cabinet Determined that a unit extension cannot be purchased because it is for a corner – will require a custom build. Will need to investigate and get a quote. The next BAC meeting will be held on Thursday, March 1st at 7:30

OTTAWA CITADEL’S ANNUAL “WINTEREE” – February 10 & 11

The Corps owes a great deal of appreciation to CSM Linda for heading up the organization of the “Winteree” events throughout the weekend. Everything from bowling, the sleigh ride, indoor games, the Karaoke Night to the chili supper went really well. (Unfortunately, we don’t have pictures of some of the events.) Joanne van Gulik and the members of the Bible Study set up the lunch on Sunday to finish up a wonderful weekend. Majors Zelinsky were wonderful guests who entered into all the activities and enjoyed themselves doing so. Major Rick’s message on Sunday was most suitable and effective.

NEWS RELEASE: The General and Commissioner Silvia Cox Lead 10th Anniversary Celebrations in Angola

London, 6 February 2018/IHQ/ – A CROWD of around 1,200 people gathered at 4 de Fevereiro Airport in Luanda, Angola, to welcome General André Cox and Commissioner Silvia Cox (World President of Women's Ministries) as they arrived to lead celebrations for the 10th anniversary of Salvation Army ministry in the country. The General reminded those gathered that all praise and honour must be given to almighty God, the creator of everything.

At the first event – officers councils – the General and Commissioner Cox urged their listeners to submit to God's will in order to be used by him for the extension of his Kingdom.

In the afternoon welcome meeting, officers, senior and junior soldiers, and friends of the Army met at Palanca Central Corps to greet the international leaders with dancing and joyful music. After the challenging message delivered by the General on the theme 'Don't rely on yourself', 98 people knelt at the mercy seat and eight young people offered for officership.

The following day, the General and Commissioner Cox led men's and women's rallies respectively. The men were challenged to fight against injustice, violence and sin, while the women were encouraged to help each other in God's love. In both meetings people responded to the messages from God's Word by kneeling in prayer at the mercy seat. Among the congregation at the women's rally were members of the Angola Christian Council of Churches.

At a music festival in the evening, old and young people united in a joyful celebration. Commissioner Silvia Cox exhorted the congregation to believe in, witness about and even be willing to die for Christ.

On Sunday, the final public meeting of the celebration was preceded by a march of witness. During the meeting the General enrolled 130 new soldiers. In his Bible message he challenged the congregation to go out of their corps buildings to preach the gospel and win Angola for Christ. More than 40 seekers went forward for prayer.

The next day, the General and Commissioner Cox and Angola Command leaders met with the country's Secretary of State for Culture, Ms Maria da Piedade de Jesus, who warmly welcomed them and offered support for The Salvation Army as it develops its activities in Angola. She told her visitors that, even though the Angolan government is secular in its organisation, 'the Church is an inescapable partner'. The General and Commissioner Silvia Cox were also received by the Swiss ambassador, Benedict Gubler, in his home.

The visit ended with a tour of command headquarters and the training college.

Lent Devotional Series

We received the following information from the Southern California Division and would ask that you pass this on to International Headquarters for their information. The Lent devotional project is using material from both The Salvation Army Songbook and The Salvation Army Tune Book. We would be pleased if International Headquarters would be willing to share this with all the Zonal Departments so that people who can access the Facebook page will gain a greater understanding and love for the literature and excellent devotional resources that form a significant part of our sung theology. Starting on Wednesday, February 14th The Southern California Division will be commencing a video series of devotions that focus on songs from The Salvation Army Song Book. Forty of the most precious hymns will be presented under the headings of ‘The name of Jesus’, 'The life and teaching of Jesus’ and ‘The suffering and death of Jesus’. The devotional thought will be accompanied by a vocal performance of the song - a time to listen to the beautiful melodies and meditate on the words.

Kevin Larsson will be reading the devotions, which have been written by some of The Salvation Army’s most highly respected and influential leaders. They include Generals John Larsson and Paul Rader, Commissioners William Francis, Alex Hughes, Keith Banks, James Knaggs, Dick Krommenhoek and also writer Major Stephen Court (please see the attached). Their knowledge and experience allows them to breakdown the theology behind the songs, explaining the author’s thoughts in a clear, simple and understandable way. The simplest way to view these brief daily videos is by joining the Facebook group, ‘The Salvation Army Song Book Devotional Series’. By joining this group, there will be a notification when a new video is added. A youtube channel of the same name has also been generated. The Lent calendar will be followed which means that starting Wednesday, February 14th there will be a new video posted every day, except for Sundays. An introductory video is on the Facebook page and can also be viewed through the link below. https://usawest-my.sharepoint.com/:v:/g/personal/amauri_neres_pereira_usw_salvationarmy_org/Ee7LRpGd- JZMqqgBjdaaJ54Bn-rrrSTsJpJv_0E_pji68g?e=oSKyGL

Layman’s Ten Commandments Someone has written these beautiful words. The piece is a must read. Try to understand the deep meaning of it. They are like the Ten Commandments to follow in life all the time!

1 Prayer is not a "spare wheel" that you pull out when in trouble, but it is a "steering wheel" that directs the right path throughout our journey.

2 So why is a car's WINDSHIELD so large and the Rear-View Mirror so small? Because our PAST is not as important as our FUTURE. So, Look Ahead and Move on.

3 Friendship is like a BOOK. It takes a few minutes to burn, but it takes years to write.

4 All things in life are temporary. If they're going well, enjoy them... they will not last forever. If they're going wrong, don't worry... they can't last long either.

5 Old Friends are Gold! New Friends are Diamond! If you get a Diamond, don't forget the Gold! Because to hold a Diamond, you always need a Base of Gold!

6 Often when we lose hope and think this is the end, GOD smiles from above and says, "Relax, friend, it's just a bend, not the end!"

7 When GOD solves your problems, you have faith in HIS abilities; when GOD doesn't solve your problems HE has faith in your abilities.

8 A blind person asked St. Anthony: "Can there be anything worse than losing eye sight?" He replied, "Yes, losing your vision!"

9 When you pray for others, God listens to you and blesses them, and sometimes, when you are safe and happy, remember that someone has prayed for you.

10 WORRYING does not take away tomorrow's TROUBLES... it takes away today's PEACE.

The People Page – John van Gulik - by Helen Groh –

You may all know who John van Gulik is already. He's the guy in the band that was on percussion until recently. It would be hard to miss him making all that noise!

John has now gone back to his first calling in the trombone section where he originally played in the Senior Band from 1970 to 1994. After a couple of years break he jumped on to percussion to fill an opening and played percussion from 1996 to the present. James Harvey is making a great replacement on the kit now and that has enabled John to make the switch back. John is also playing trombone in Legacy Brass. John started writing music back in 1998. Since then he has written over thirty compositions and arrangements for brass band, nine for choral groups, and arranged a couple for piano. You may not know it but John’s music has been played all over the world. Australia, New Zealand, Canada, US, Argentina, Suriname, Zimbabwe, England, Italy, France, Germany, and Romania. In fact, just last fall John travelled to Romania to conduct a brass band playing one of his marches!

John has loved the Lord since being led to Christ at the age of seven. He tries to ensure that all his music has the Christian message and is associated with words to the tunes used.

John is married to Joanne and they have four fantastic children of their own. Erica, who has a Master's degree in Theology and will be married in May, Katie, who is working full time as an accountant and getting her 2nd University degree, Sean, who is finishing his Master's degree in trumpet performance, and Michael who is an aspiring hip-hop music producer and starting high school next year. Joanne and John have also fostered sixteen children since 2001.

John has started a funding initiative to help a poor family of seven children and their grandmother with getting a house in Romania. The project is being run from the Baptist Church John visited in the fall. So far the project has raised enough to purchase the house and the family is living there now. The funding here has already raised $1200 of which $1000 has already been transferred. If you would like to help with this project or get some details, contact John by email at [email protected] or check his Facebook page. Thank you, John, and your family for the rich contributions you make to our Corps and to worthwhile projects across the world. It is good to learn of all that you do in addition to the wonderful music-making you and many of your family members contribute.
