PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

As we fly into the winter season, I am very appreciave of the hard work and energy of the teachers in all the extra‐curricular acvies that were offered in the fall. To see so many students get involved and enjoy their acvies was great. As well, thanks for the parental support in helping with rides, being cheer leaders, and bringing posive energy to the environment.

With report cards being handed out to your child on November 15th, it is very important to read the descripve comments teachers have made. We want all of our students to have success, so please do not hesitate to contact the school if you have any quesons.

This year the musical “Bring it On” led by Mr. Soucy, has a flare for cheerleading. You will see over 100 talented students sharing energy and passion performing. The performances began Sunday, November 25 at 7 p.m. They will connue on November 26 through to December 1st. There will be a manee on Saturday, December 1st at 1:30. As well, bring your loonies and toonies as there will be many raffle items to help support our Christmas hamper program for the Walter Murray Community.

The last day of school before the holiday season will be Friday, December 21st. School resumes on Monday, January 7th where there will be ten days of learning before final assessments begin on Tuesday, January 22.

OPEN HOUSES

 Walter Murray Collegiate will be hosting a Pre‐Collegiate Night for all feeder schools on Monday, January 14 at 7:00 p.m. in our gymnasium and auditorium.

 SAGE Open House on January 25 at 1:00 p.m.

 Grade 8 School Wide‐Open House will be held on Thursday, February 7 at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium. French Immersion information will also be provided at this time.

COURSE SELECTION INFORMATION SESSION

Do you realize that in February students in grades nine through eleven will be selecting courses for the 2019‐2020 school year? Are you hoping to be kept in the loop regarding your child’s options? Parents are invited to a course selection information session on Tuesday, January 15 at 7 p.m. in the Walter Murray Collegiate cafeteria. At this meeting we will outline the course selection process, highlight new courses, and answer questions you may have about required and elective courses.

 If you will be 15 years of age and want to take driver’s education, make sure you choose it when selecting your classes.

Walter Murray’s 2017‐2018 top 10 students from grades 9 to 11 were recognized at an aernoon Marauder Academic Tea held on October 24. Mr. Tom Sargeant welcomed over 60 invited guests ‐ parents, guardians, vice/assistant principals, our school trustee, Charmaine Bellamy, and our superintendent, Mr. Dean Newton.

LINK CREW

Link Crew has had a strong presence this fall at Walter Murray. There was a lot of buzz at Orientaon Day to kick off the school year, followed up by the Homecoming Football Game and BBQ in September. Link Crew Leaders have been going in to Grade 9 Advisory Classes to do team building acvies, always with a meaningful lesson to be learned. Most recently, Link Crew helped deliver report cards to the Grade 9s and set academic goals for the rest of the year. Whether it’s Grade 9 Parent Night, or Marauder Morning, our Link Crew are involved in building relaonships and a strong sense of community. Stay tuned for many more events to come!

Important informaon regarding parent teacher conferences will be in this newsleer. *Please note Parent Teacher Conferences has changed from ATTENTION March 21 and 22 to March 28 and 29. Regular day of classes on Friday, PLEASE March 22. There will be no school for students on Friday, March 29. Please keep in mind, because of the March 2019 sizeable amount of newsleers that we send out via e‐mail all at once, it is important to check your “junk mail” as well. Semester 2 Calendar for March, April, May, and June has changed. The day 1 and 2 have all been affected. It is important that you look on the Calendar of Events link in the parent portal or WMCI school website to see the updates. These changes will really affect you if you have day 1 and 2 classes (physed and band students).

FRENCH STUDIES AND TRAVEL OPPORTUNITIES

Explore is a five‐week intensive language‐learning course (with possible university credit). Parcipants receive a $2,200 bursary covering tuion, instruconal materials, acvies, meals, and accommodaons. Deadline to apply is the end of February, 2019.

Odyssey is a full‐me language assistant program. Students travel to Quebec or New Brunswick and lead English‐ language acvies in an elementary, secondary, or post‐secondary classroom. Salary: $20 an hour for 25 hours per week over nine months. One year of post‐secondary studies is required to apply. Deadline to apply is the end of February, 2019.

The ‐Quebec Student Exchange Program is a six‐month reciprocal exchange for students in grade ten and eleven. Saskatchewan families host in first semester and Quebec families host in second semester. Parcipants pay a $300 fee to cover paral cost of airfare. Deadline to apply is early February, 2019.

REMEMBRANCE DAY

Thank you to all the students, staff, and guests who aended the Walter Murray Remembrance Day ceremony. Many students and staff parcipated in the organizaon, the readings, the musical selecons, and the technical producon of the program. The silent respect that radiated in our gymnasium among our Walter Murray students confirms our young peoples’ hearelt gratude for our veterans’ past and present ulmate sacrifices.

YEARBOOK ORDER In order to be on the yearbook list, all fees including yearbook, must be paid by March 1, 2019. An alphabecal list will be posted on the main office window mid January of students whose yearbook order is confirmed. If you have not ordered a yearbook, the cost is $30.

DANCE RECITAL

The Dance 10/20 class will be hosng a Winter Dance recital on January 16th at 7 p.m. in the Auditorium. All are welcome. Tickets are $5/adult and $2/student or child.

WRESTLING

Wrestling begins on December 4. We won the junior boys’ most improved team and the girls were city champions last season. Everyone is welcome to come out. You will only be wrestling people your own ability and weight. See Coach Barry in Room 223.

We have the capability to add contact phone numbers and emails to our telephone Message Manager absence noficaons. The message will be received around 6:30 p.m. each day for absences that have occurred during the day. Individual requests can be made directly to the Aendance Secretary between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

“BRING IT ON, THE MUSICAL!”

The cast, crew, and supervising teachers would like to extend a BIG thank you to the community for the wonderful support of Walter Murray’s 2018 producon of the musical “BRING IT ON”. The show involved a large number of students who volunteered their me and talents to make the show a success.

The annual fall musical at Walter Murray is a me‐honoured tradion that allows many WMCI students to pursue their creave passions, while building self‐confidence and forming lasng friendships. We played to very supporve crowds from November 25 to December 1.

We would also like to thank the community for the generous support of our fundraising efforts during our performances where we raised money for the charity, Stepping Stones Inc. who sponsors school building projects in the Philippines, the Walter Music Department, the Light & Sound Club and Food Hampers for families in need in our community. Thank you and see you next year!

MUSIC DEPARTMENT

BAND Walter Murray Music Department students put on a very successful concert on November 1! We are looking forward to our next concert on December 11 at 7:00 p.m. in the Girls’ Gym at WMCI. The cost is $5 per person (grade 8 and under are free).

On December 11 our neighbourhood Grade 8 students will be having seconals and a concert with our grade 11 and 12 band students at 1:45 p.m. in the WMCI girls gym. Free admission. All are welcome.

CHOIR Congratulaons to all students who were part of the musical, “Bring It On!” – the many singers, actors, and dancers worked hard to put together an authenc musical with excellent props, lighng, and sound! Bravo!

Choir Students will be performing and caroling at Preston Park II at 8:45 a.m. on December 19 for the seniors’ breakfast. Parents are welcome to meet us over there for some holiday singing and cheer.

CAROLING IN FOYER Grade 9 through 12 band and choir students will have the opportunity to busk in the hallways of WMCI during the last week of school before the holidays. They have been working together on music in small ensembles so they can spread good cheer at morning break and lunch, as well as, help raise money for our school charity. On December 21 the choir will be caroling in the front foyer from 8:00 to 8:35 a.m. All proceeds will go to the dignity fund for our less fortunate families at Walter Murray.

CONGRATULATIONS Nate L. performed in the Saskatchewan Honour Band in Saskatoon and played a fantasc concert for hundreds of music educators and families.

A Special Season for the Cross Country Team The 13th City Title in 14 Years and Provincial Gold

The Walter Murray Cross Country team connued the tradion of excellence by capturing its 13th city tle in 14 years and winning the first league championships! Special congratulaons to Moktar A., Alexander W., and Allison N. who won gold in Senior Boys, Junior Boys, and Junior Girls respecvely. Ma F. and Farren S., won silver in Midget Boys and Midget Girls. Fergus E., Lauren M., and Quincy F. won bronze in Midget Boys, Junior Girls, and Senior Boys. Congratulaons to the following four teams who captured the team division pennants: Midget Boys, Junior Girls, Junior Boys, and Senior Boys. Midget girls placed second and Senior

Girls placed third. Therefore, every team contributed to the total team score. Way to go team!

The 27 athletes who competed on the Saskatoon team at the Provincial High School Cross Country Championships at Delisle turned in a number of personal best performances and a first place team (GOLD!) finish in the 4A category, with a record performance that beered every team in every category. Congratulaons to all of our team members who contributed to our team gold tle!

Moktar A., a member of our Cross Country team, placed fourth at naonal championships over a distance of 6 km in the Under 18 Boys Category. The race took place in Kingston, Ontario on Saturday, November 24. His me was 15 seconds behind the leader. Great job Moktar!

Blake T., another team member, has been invited to Team Saskatchewan to swim in a naonal meet called Toronto Grand Prix this coming January 18 to 20, 2019. Way to go Blake!

TAKE OUR KIDS TO WORK DAY—A HUGE SUCCESS!

On Wednesday, November 14, over 200 grade nine students from Walter Murray spent the day at work with their parent or another adult. The success of this program is largely due to the generosity of our business community in accepng these students into their work places. Some of the students were given special tours designed to introduce them to the many facets of the workplace. Students were safely given workplace tasks that introduced them to new employability skills.

Many nearby businesses generously welcomed our young adults and gave accolades on the students’ posive demeanor and work ethic. Way to go Marauders!

AT OUR SCHOOL:

UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN TUTORING SESSIONS: Thank you to all of the dedicated U of S students who have been volunteering their tutoring services free of charge to assist Walter Murray students who may need some help with their classes. Tutoring sessions are held every Tuesday from 3:30 to 5 P.M. in the cafeteria. This is on a drop‐in basis.

TRANSCRIPT REQUESTS THROUGH STUDENT SERVICES: Students requesng transcripts for scholarships or post‐secondary admission are asked to sign up in Student Services. These transcripts are unofficial.

Please Note: Students are responsible for requesng official transcripts from the Ministry of Educaon.

 Students requiring official transcripts are asked to visit the Saskatchewan Ministry of Educaon website at www.educaon.gov.sk.ca for instrucons. Official transcripts are required by post‐secondary instuons. Please note: the Ministry charges $20 to send your request to the various Saskatchewan instuons.

STUDENT SERVICES FACEBOOK PAGE AND COUNSELLOR CORNER (on the WMCI portal): Looking for informaon on upcoming events and scholarship opportunies? The Guidance Office puts all of this informaon on their Facebook Page, which is a program dedicated to help keep students “in the know” on the various opportunies available to them. (This informaon is also put on the Student Services Facebook page, called Student Services at Walter Murray Collegiate Instute, or on the WMCI portal under Counsellor Corner).
