Fan, player, and personnel safety remains our primary focus. Because the situation changes almost daily, and differently in each area where the League operates, our approach is to remain creative, nimble, and adaptable to how each situation unfolds throughout the entire League footprint so that where and when baseball can safely be played, it will be played. However, as of today, because of the regime of governmental restrictions currently in effect and their resulting impact on the League's ability to maintain a workable schedule, the May 26th opening date for Northwoods League teams has been postponed indefinitely league-wide. The League will continue to monitor the specific situation in each of the communities where it operates to see where play might safely commence, consider the league-wide impacts of each location's status, and will adjust various contingency plans accordingly. Following this process, the League will continue to make frequent assessments, taking into consideration any local and state-wide updates, and will immediately communicate any further changes to the status of the League schedule. In the meantime, we want to sincerely thank our fans, players, and all of the personnel who make the Northwoods League such an important part of the communities where we play. We look forward to safely coming together as soon as possible. ### The Northwoods League is the proven leader in the development of elite college baseball players. Having completed its’ 26th season, the Northwoods League is the largest organized baseball league in the world with 22 teams, drawing significantly more fans, in a friendly ballpark experience, than any league of its kind. A valuable training ground for coaches, umpires and front office staff, over 230 Northwoods League players have advanced to Major League Baseball, including three-time All-Star and 2016 Roberto Clemente Award winner Curtis Granderson, three-time Cy Young Award winner and World Series Champion Max Scherzer (WAS), two-time World Series Champions Ben Zobrist (CHC) and Brandon Crawford (SFG) and World Series Champion Chris Sale (BOS). As well as 2019 Rookie of the Year and Home Run Derby Champion Pete Alonso (NYM) and MLB All-Star Jordan Zimmermann (DET). All league games are viewable live via the Northwoods League website. During his 23-year career, Meriwether umpired over 2,500 regular season games in addition to 49 Postseason games, including eight World Series contests, and two All-Star Games. A young man is deemed invaluable and exalted by the public. The hero is cast into the spotlight and bestowed with insurmountable expectations. But the acclamations and pressures are burdensome and the invented savior fails to fulfill the prospects once imagined by the public. He is cast aside, disregarded as a symbol of failure or one deserving of pity. It’s the quintessential tragedy of a fallen hero. The protagonist of this report is Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg, who enjoyed a phenomenal rookie season before it ended abruptly due to a severe elbow injury.

Indians come up empty in extras vs. Tigers By Jordan Bastian MLB.com @MLBastian DETROIT -- Given the extent of the Indians' bullpen issues this season, it would be easy to focus on the final pitch thrown on Saturday night. Jeimer Candelario sent it rattling into the right-field seats at Comerica Park, and Tribe closer Cody Allen made the lonely walk off the field as the party ensued at home plate. That home run was the decisive moment in Cleveland's 4-2, 12-inning loss to the Tigers, and it came after Allen volunteered for duty, despite it marking his fourth appearance in five days. Prior to that pitch, though, this had been one of the better showings of late by the Tribe's relief corps. The path to this defeat was paved by missed chances for the Indians' offense. "Credit to the pitching today," Indians catcher Yan Gomes said. "It stinks that we ended up on that side, but both sides' pitching did a tremendous job, both sides had chances to win a ballgame and both sides escaped." Detroit just happened to escape with the win. Gomes' solo homer in the third inning marked the only breakthrough against Tigers starter Mike Fiers, who filled the strike zone with fastballs and confounded Cleveland's order with his array of offspeed offerings over seven innings. At multiple turns, the right-hander found himself in a jam, but sidestepped harm to keep Detroit within striking distance. In the first, the Indians put runners on the corners with one out, but Lonnie Chisenhall chopped into an inning-ending double play.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES THURSDAY, AUGUST 24, 2017 NATIONAL TREASURE With a victory on Sunday at San Diego, Washington Nationals starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez improved to 12-5 on the season with a 2.39 ERA. The 31-year-old left-hander has won each of his last four starts, permitting just one earned run over 27.2 innings pitched (0.33 ERA). According to Elias, the only other pitchers in Expos/Nationals history to post an ERA below 0.50 over four straight starts within one season (all wins), are Charlie Lea (0.28 in 1981), Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez (0.30 in 1997) and Javier Vazquez (0.28 in 2001). With his next start, Gio will attempt to become the fourth pitcher in Montreal/Washington franchise history to pick up a victory while tossing at least 6.0 innings and allowing one earned run or less in fi ve consecutive starts, and just the second to do so in a single season. Jordan Zimmermann accomplished the feat in six consecutive starts in 2012, while Martinez did so in six straight starts across the 1996-97 seasons. Gonzalez’ teammate Joe Ross compiled a streak of fi ve such starts between 2015-16. The two-time All-Star has now pitched into the sixth inning in 19 consecutive starts, and he has lasted at least 5.0 innings in 25 straight outings. Steve Rogers holds the all-time franchise mark of 62 straight starts of at least 5.0 innings pitched from May 22, 1977 - April 15, 1979.
