Note Maureen McTeer was born on February 27, 1952 in Cumberland, , . McTeer is a public spokesperson, educator, author and lawyer. McTeer earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at the in 1973 and a Bachelors of Common Law (LL.B) in 1976, also at the University of Ottawa. McTeer later attended Dalhousie University, in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she earned a Master's in Health Law (LL.M). McTeer also holds a graduate degree from the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom in biotechnological law and ethics. She holds honorary doctorate degrees from Athabasca University, Carleton University and the University of Sheffield. McTeer has been a member of the Clinical Ethics Committee at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, the Committee of Accreditation for Canadian Medical Schools, National Council of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada as well as the national spokesperson for the Osteoporosis Society of Canada. McTeer is the Canadian Representative of the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood. McTeer is also the founding member of the Ottawa Women's Health Council, Canada's Royal Commission on New Reproductive Technologies and Chair for the Shirley E. Greenberg Women's Health Centre Advisory Board. McTeer is the author of five books, including: Residences: Homes of Canada's Leaders (1982); Tangled Womb: The Politics of Human Reproduction (1992); Parliament: Canada's Democracy and How it Works (1995); Tough Choices: Living and Dying in the 21st Century (1999) and the memoir In My Own Name (2003). McTeer also hosted the web show Science Bytes between 1999-2001, a series of short videos highlighting recently published scientific studies and interviewing scholars about discoveries shaping the future. McTeer is currently head of the international health and maternal health policy group in the consulting firm, & Associates Limited.
