Alamo ASHRAE’s Very Own Christopher Delgado was selected to attend ASHRAE’s Leadership U Program at this year’s 2014 winter conference in Ney York City! We asked him to share his thoughts and this is what he had to say about the experience…

How did you get selected for the Leadership U Program? I was encouraged by our chapter president to submit an application (thanks Rey!) and went ahead and applied never thinking I would be selected. The application was just a few short response questions, focusing on any past involvement with ASHRAE, future goals, and interest in the Leadership U program. What helped me the most was attending the conferences held in San Antonio and Dallas, and have also started to be more involved with the local chapter. I have also been a member since I gradu- ated eight years ago, and have completed several continuing education courses through ASHRAE Learning Institute. ASHRAE accepts applications for the Leadership U program for both the Winter and Annual Conferences each year. There are multiple ongoing opportunities, and I would encourage anyone with interest to submit an application. https://www.ashrae.org/membership--conferences/leadership-u

What was the program like? The program pairs up each of the four participants with a current ASHRAE Vice President. I was attached at the hip of my men- tor for the week going to the same meetings and events. It was like drinking from a fire hose with each conversation loaded with all the great ASHRAE/HVAC acronyms we’ve all come to love. I was able to ask questions about what the greatest challenges are for the society, where the money comes from, and so on. The program was all about transferring knowledge, which is vital- ly important for the society, the HVAC industry, and the entire engineering field. It is really important senior level folks, with all their knowledge and experience, give back and mentor the next generation. Otherwise as they exit the workforce, their knowledge leaves with them. I realized that the people involved all the way to the top of the society care a great deal about not only the industry but each ASHRAE member. They recognize the importance of the society’s role in getting young people in- volved and active. It was really humbling to meet so many intelligent, dedicated, generous people.

What was the Winter Conference like? This was my third conference, and all of them have been great experiences. I was able to volunteer as a monitor and attend the first two for free. I encourage everyone to try and attend at least one conference, because it will really give you an idea of what ASHRAE is involved in and where you might be able to get involved as well. The conference was information rich. From the short courses being offered, to the bookstores, the technical presentations, and even the technical committees, the conference has something for everyone. And, of course the conferences offer the opportunity to network with peers globally.

PAGE 3 THE SQUIRREL CAGE —ALAMO ASHRAE Leadership U Program -Continued From Previous Page-

What did you learn about ASHRAE that you didn’t know before? What struck me, is how big ASHRAE is. How it’s almost completely a volunteer run organization. There are over 50,000 members worldwide. It is growing, especially internationally, with some of the biggest increases in countries such as Egypt and Qatar. You can imagine there are challenges that come along with a society this large. For instance, how to make sure that each member gets a monthly copy of the ASHRAE Journal, or gets access to translated design guides, standards, and eLearning courses. ASHRAE is clearly recognized as a global authority for best practices within the built environment. At the same time, the standards and policies it is trying to help shape tend to change and be adopted at the local level. For instance, this is why ASHRAE established its Grassroots and Government Affairs Committee (GGAC) to make sure members are keeping up with what is happening to building codes and standards at the local level.

What else would you like to share with others? I would just encourage everyone to make the time to get involved within ASHRAE or a similar group. Every handbook chapter, every design guide, every standards, etc. was created by a volunteer member just like you and I. If you’ve been in the industry for a while, take the time to give back. Present your recent projects, host a lunch and learn, encourage your employees to pro- mote ASHRAE. If you are new to the industry, there is a lot of knowledge out there to be gained, keep learning. Attend a socie- ty meeting, come to a YEA event, or just check out the website. I think there is something for everyone. Note: In addition to the Leadership U Program, ASHRAE also offers the LeaDRS Program. This program is intended for those interested in serving at the regional and society level. Participants will have the opportunity to shadow DRCs. You can down- load the information packet at the link below (this is from the region X website, could not find on the society page): http://www.regionx.org/LeaDRS%20Information%20Packet.pdf

Every commercial kitchen requires proper ventilation, and like most mechanical systems without proper design, the ongoing operational costs can dwarf upfront system cost. Join us this month for a presentation on proper ventila- tion control. The presentation will review traditional exhaust and make-up air system design approach, as well as demand control ventilation systems. We will also review codes pertinent to kitchen ventilation, and integration of fire/smoke control systems.

ASHRAE PRESS RELEASE—ANNOUNCEMENT

ASHRAE Announces Call for Papers for 2015 Winter Conference, Jan. 24-28, Chicago

ATLANTA – ASHRAE has announced a call for papers for its 2015 Winter Conference in Chicago, Ill., Jan. 24-28.

“With the Conference being held in the big city of Chicago, the Technical Program itself is going big with a fo- cus on big projects, the big picture and big impacts,” Doug Cochrane, Conference chair, said.

The Conference seeks papers and programs for the tracks, which address trends in the industry; are relevant to the design community in the area; and introduce a unique topic and include core tracks on systems and equipment and fundamentals and applications.

New tracks for the Conference include:

 Industrial Facilities. Manufacturing and processes can have some different requirements for HVAC. This track explores design and practices for industrial buildings.

 Large Buildings: Mission Critical Facilities and Applications. Facilities like data centers have some different characteristics. This track looks at what is required for these unique applications.

 Life Safety. This encompasses egress, sprinklers, alarms, emergency lighting, smoke barriers and special hazard protection. This track gives you the tools for all the factors to consider in life safety and lessons learned.

 Design of Energy and Water Efficient Systems. The trend is to green sustainable buildings. This track will look at what works and what doesn’t to attain these efficient systems.

 Hospital Design and Codes. Healthcare design takes into account some unique aspects. This track ex- plores design and code requirements to ensure patient comfort.
