1 4 4 New Event Ongoing Outbreak Outbreak HIGHLIGHTS: WEEK 18, (27April -- May 3, 2020)

* In the total number of confirmed COVID -19 cases raised to 250, Recoveries 105 and 5 deaths recorded as of 11th May, 2020. * People who were in close contact with the confirmed cases are being traced and quarantined. . * The national surveillance completeness and timeliness rate were 91.2% and 89.1% respectively * Transmission of Guinea worm is ongoing, the second Baboon infection with Dracunculiasis medinensis (morpholog- ically confirmed) reported from Woreda, Gambela region of Ethiopia on May 9, 2020. . * Cholera outbreaks continued in SNNPR, Somalia and regions, Dasenech Woreda of SNNPR the most af- fected and reported 836 suspected Cholera cases and 12 deaths since from 27 April=11 10 May 2020. * Measles outbreaks continued across the country with Oromia region affected most, acively ongoing in Oromia,Am- hara and Afar regions during the week, a total of 612 suspected measles cases and 4 death were reported during the week. * A total of 18,085 confirmed and clinical malaria cases with 1 deaths were reported during the week. * A total of 4,834 SAM cases and 8 deaths reported, showed 325 (7%) cases decrement as compared to last week * A total of 24 Maternal deaths were reported during this week, showed 6(20%) decrement as compared to last week. * A total of 123 Perinatal deaths were reported during this week, showed 9(7%) decrement as compared to last week. * Atotal of 133 suspected rabies cases and 1 death were reported during the week. * Response to the ongoing outbreak strengthened by the team deployed from the national and regional health bureau

Surveillance report Completeness and Timeliness The national surveillance data reporting completeness and timeliness rate were 91.2% and 89.1% respectively. All regions have achieved above WHO minimum requirement of 80% Except City and .

Epi /Bulletine/ Week 18,2020 Page Number 1 Ethiopian Public Health Institue GUINEA WORM: Transmission of Guinea worm is ongoing in Duli Village, Gog woreda, Gambela region of Ethiopia. The second Baboon infection with Dracunculiasis medinensis reported from Gog Woreda, Gambela region of Ethiopia on May 9, 2020. Ethiopia reported a total of 7 Human cases Guinea worm disease since the beginning of April up to May 10, 2020. Active surveillance is maintained and strengthened in area to interrupt the guinea-worm disease transmission. activities such as abating of ponds, Detail case investi- gation, Active case search, case management, filter distribution, and health education are major activities are ongoing. Cholera: is ongoing in SNNPR, Somali and Oromia region, a total of 432 suspected Cholera cases and 12 deaths were reported during the week (week 18, 2020). The highest 387(86%) were reported from SNNPR, 42 (8%) were from Somali and 3(1%) were from Oromia region. Of all reported 12 deaths reported during week 18,2020, 9 deaths were from Dasenech woreda and 3 were from Dolo Ado woreda of . Dasenech woreda of South omo zone reported 836 Suspected Cholera cases and 12 deaths from 27 April -11 May 2020.

Anthrax: A total of 24 Suspected Anthrax cases without death were reported during the week, which showed 3(13%) cases increment as compared to last week. The suspected Neo- natal case and death was reported from SNNPR.

Maternal Death: A total of 24 maternal deaths were reported nationally during this week, which showed 6(20%) maternal deaths decrement as compared to last week. Highest 11(46%) deaths were from Oromia region followed by 6(25%) from Amhara region and 2(8.3%) were from SNNPR.

Perinatal Death: A total of 123 Perinatal deaths were reported nationally during this week, which showed 9(7%) Perinatal deaths decrement as compared to last week. Highest 43(35%) deaths were from Amhara region followed by 32(26%) of deaths were from city and 18(15%) were from Oromia region.

Measles: During the week, a total of 612 suspected measles cases and 4 deaths were reported and showed 57(8.5%) cases decrement as compared to last week. The highest 450(73%) suspected measles cases were from Oromia region followed by 136(22%) from Amhara region and 8(1.3%) from Afar region. Of total 4 deaths reported, 3 deaths were from Oromia region (2 from Guder Hospital and 1 from Olanciti woreda) and 1 death was reported from Chifra woreda of Afar region.

Epi /Bulletine/ Week 18, 2020 Page Number 4 Ethiopian Public Health Institue Rabies: Nationally 133 suspected rabies cases and 1 death were reported during the week, which showed 55(41%) increment of cases as compared to last week. Highest 52(39%) suspected rabies cases were from Tigray followed by 32(24%) from Addis Ababa city and 19(14%) were from Amhara region. One death was reported from Enemay Woreda, East Gojam Zone of Amhara region.

Malaria: During the week a total of 18,085 confirmed and clinical cases and 1 deaths were reported during the week, which showed 1070(5.9%) cases increment as compared to the last week. Highest 5417(30%) cases were from Amhara region followed by 3738(21%) cases were from SNNPR region and 2101(12%) cases from Oromia region. One malaria death was reported from Chifra woreda of Afar region.

Meningitis: A total of 159 suspected meningitis cases without death were reported during the week, which showed 95(60%) case increment as compared to last week. The highest 122(77%) suspected cases were from Oromia, followed by 16(10%) cases were from Somali and 4(0.05%) were reported from Harari and Amhara region for each.

Relapsing fever (RF): A total of 53 relapsing fever (RF) cases without death were reported during the week, showed 25(32%) cases decrement as compared to the last week. Highest 25(47%) RF cases were from Oro- mia region followed by 15(28%) cases from Addis Ababa city and 13(25%) were from Somali region.

Scabies: A total of 3,614 scabies case were reported during the week, showed 484(13%) cases increment as compared to the last week. Highest 1529(42%) scabies cases were from Amhara followed by 865(24%) cases were from Oromia and 488(14%) from Addis Ababa city.

Epi /Bulletine/ Week 18, 2020 Page Number 5 Ethiopian Public Health Institue Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM): During the week, a total of 4,834 SAM cases and 8 deaths were reported which showed 325(7%) cases increment as compared to last week. The highest 2104(44%) SAM cases were reported from Oromia region followed by 1256(26%) from Somali region and 497(10%) from SNNPR. Of total eight deaths reported, 3 SAM deaths were from Oromia region, (2 from Afar and SNNPR for each) and 1 death was from Amhara region.

Epi /Bulletine/ Week 18,2020 Page Number 6 Ethiopian Public Health Institue Major Public health action Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI), in collaboration with WHO and other health partners, are responding to the outbreak in the affected woredas. Response Teams have been deployed to all outbreak affected woredas and continued remote support is being provided to all regions.

COVID-19: In Ethiopia the total number of confirmed COVID -19 cases raised to 250, Recoveries 105 and 5 COVID-19 deaths recorded as of 11th May, 2020.

Globally 4,255,942 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 287,332 deaths were reported as of 11th May, 2020, in a 212 countries/territories/ areas.

Major Public health actions in Ethiopia for 2019 novel coronavirus

• Contact identification, contact listing and follow-up of Confirmed cases strengthened and well maintained. • Aggressive rumor investigation, Infection prevention and Control and epidemiologically linking of contacts and confirmed cases are major activities ongoing. • Collecting sample and conducting the tests for the suspected cases are also ongoing. • Case Detection and testing of SARI and Pneumonia like illness from Hospitals are ongoing. • Peoples who were in close contact with the confirmed COVID 19 cases are being traced and quarantined.
