About the Estate
Nestled between the Highway and Cable Street, the Glamis Estate is a 70s The estate comprises properties in: -built estate located in the heart of Cable Street built 1976 Shadwell. The estate is split into 2 distinct areas, Glamis East and Glamis Elf Row built 1976 West. Although the majority of 1-47 Glamis Road built 1976 properties are mainly low rise flats and maisonettes intermingled with some Gordon House built 1965 houses, both Glamis East and Glamis Redcastle Close built 1982 West have a high rise block towering above the rest of the estate. The Glamis estate formally transferred to EastendHomes in October 2007 .
The Glamis Estate has excellent transport links as both the Docklands Light Railway and the East London Overground Line are accessible from Shadwell station, just a short distance away. There are also 2 bus routes, D3 and 100 that pass the Estate providing links to Whitechapel, Wapping, Bethnal Green and Canary Wharf. The Glamis Estate's closest shopping area is Watney Market, a vibrant mix of local shops, stalls and cafés. Whitechapel’s shops and market stalls www.eastendhomes.net are also close by and both the D3 bus and Docklands Light Railway make the
shops, restaurants and cafés of Canary Wharf accessible. The Estate is also well situated for schools as both Mulberry and Bishop Challoner secondary schools as is the Bluegate Fields primary school. Glamis’ local church is St Mary’s, located on Cable Street and the estate is served by a few local mosques within walking distance. Whilst Glamis has a number of communal greens for residents to use, King Edward’s Memorial Park, opposite the Estate is a popular place for residents to go. The park was opened by King George V and Queen Mary in 1922 and opens up onto the north bank of the River Thames. As well as providing an open green space (Green flag award) the Park offers an all-weather football pitch, tennis courts, a bowling green, a bandstand and a children’s play area, so all generations are catered for. Shadwell Basin which offers a large number of recreational activities is also nearby and is particularly popular for waterborne activities.

The Glamis Estate has its own community hall which is run by the residents and which offers a number of activities ranging from Bingo to dance classes. There is also the independent Glamis Adventure Playground which is conveniently situated between the Glamis East and West estates.

Green Areas The estate has a number of grassed communal areas, many of which have received environmental works and planting in the past few years. EastendHomes has worked with resident volunteers, environmental experts from Trees for Cities and corporate volunteers from large companies to plant trees and improve the appearance of communal areas on both parts of the Glamis estate. Using volunteers has allowed EastendHomes to carry out works www.eastendhomes.net ahead of the planned regeneration works to the estate, and with no costs for the works being passed to tenants or
leaseholders.
Regenerating the estate Since transfer extensive works to the Glamis estate have been carried out, including: • Upgrade of communal heating and hot water systems • Glazing repairs to Roslin House • Renewal of guttering and rainwater goods • New windows Proposals for the development of new housing, including new affordable housing, have been discussed at length with residents. Following discussions with the Glamis Estate Board and the planning authority the scale of plans have been scaled down considerably. It is anticipated that plans for development will generate approximately £1 million for reinvestment in the estate.

ACTION PLAN
In reviewing the information gathered in preparing this Neighbourhood Plan, and following discussions with local residents, we have three key goals to improve the services EastendHomes provide to residents of the Glamis estate. These are: • Continue to develop horticultural plans with Trees for Cities to improve the green areas of the estate • Continue to work with police Safer Neighbourhood Teams to maintain current record low levels of anti-social behaviour • Continue our regeneration work to improve the estate
