The Darkest Part of the Forest Holly Black Reviewed By: Anika 16 Star Teen Book Reviewer of Be the Star You Are! Charity The Darkest Part of the Forest Holly Black Reviewed by: Anika 16 Star Teen Book Reviewer of Be the Star You Are! Charity www.bethestaryouare.org Hazel and Ben were raised in the small strange town of Fairfold. The town is known for the horned prince sleeping in a glass coffin deep inside the forest. As children, Hazel and Ben once told stories of the prince and fought off magical monsters in the forest. As they grow up, the siblings admire the prince, but no longer do they continue their childhood fantasies. That all changes when the prince wakes up and causes mayhem within the town of Fairfold. Mysterious deaths and disappearances follow the princes return and now Hazel and Ben must put a stop to it before it’s too late. The Darkest Part of the Forest is an enchanting fairytale full of mystery. Fairfold is certainly a magical place and I very much enjoyed exploring it. Strange magical creatures lurk out in the forest, but they are not all that kind. Any bargain made with them comes with a price. And that price can make things interesting indeed. All in all, I loved the fairytale/fantasy element to this story. The amazing array of characters was also something to behold. Each one of them had their own quirks, ambitions, and flaws. It was interesting to learn more about the backstories and secrets of all these characters. The readers surely won’t expect what’s coming to them. Despite this, the author’s story follows a rather confusing plot. It can be difficult to keep track of what happened along with the new revelations in the story. Readers may also want to avoid the bad language, violence, and bits of romance in this book. Therefore, I would recommend this book to anyone 14 years or older. This would make an amazing gift for fans of fantasy and dark fairytales. Alastair brought the car to a stop and they piled out along with Havoc, who ran along the edge of the grass, barking. Alastair glanced at Call once before locking the car — there was no suitcase to carry out, no duffel bags or luggage to worry about. Call had come home from Master Joseph’s with nothing. Not exactly nothing, said Aaron’s voice in his head. You’ve got me. Call tried not to smile. It would be weird if his dad saw him grinning at nothing, especially since lately there hadn’t been much to smile about — Master Joseph and his forces had been defeated by the Magisterium, but there had been a high death toll. Call’s best friend, Aaron, had been raised from the dead only to die again. As far as anyone knew. “Are you all right?” Alastair squinted at Call. “You look dyspeptic.” Call abandoned the attempt not to smile. “Just glad to be home.” Alastair hugged him awkwardly. “I don’t blame you.” The house looked smaller inside, too. Call went into his bedroom, Havoc panting at his heels. It was still weird to see Havoc with regular green wolf eyes instead of the coruscating eyes of the Chaos-ridden.

They are the reason why heroes and heroines struggle to fight against, but at the same time they balance the whole realm, existing side by side with the heroes. There have been numerous children stories which depict the monsters as the villains, but they have rarely done so in portraying monsters as the wronged ones. In Holly Black’s Valiant (2005), the troll character named Ravus is presented as an outcast, a banished figure from his folk because of a misjudged rumor in his former kingdom. Unlike others who constantly challenge and trap humans, Ravus becomes a scholar who loves to explore his alchemy.

Tales of the Fey: The use of traditional Faerie folklore in contemporary young adult fantasy novels by Caralyn Andersen B.A. Simon Fraser University, 1992 B.Ed. University of British Columbia, 1996 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Children's Literature) The University of British Columbia (Vancouver) June 2008 © Caralyn Andersen 2008 Abstract There are many examples of novel-length renditions of traditional fairy tales to be found in young adult fantasy literature. Although there is a significant amount of research on the evolution of the fairy tale into novel length narratives, there is little focused on the use of the folklore of Faerie in fantasy novels. This thesis examines the Faerie-related folkloric themes and motifs to be found in four examples of contemporary young adult fantasy novels: An Earthly Knight, Thomas the Rhymer, Tithe, and The Hunter's Moon. Each of these narratives is rich in Faerie folklore. The authors, Janet McNaughton, Ellen Kushner, Holly Black, and O.R. Melling, have gone beyond the pop-culture image of the fairy and explored the many aspects of Faerie to be found in folklore. In their unique ways, these authors each explore Faerie as a realm full of marvels and contradictions, while remaining true to the nature of Faerie found in folklore. This strong base in traditional sources strengthens and adds depth to these narratives. Table Of Contents Abstract ii Table Of Contents iii Acknowledgements v Chapter 1: Introduction

2012 Frankfurt Rights Guide Barry Goldblatt Literary LLC 320 7 th Avenue #266 Brooklyn, NY 11215 [email protected] www.bgliterary.com GOBLIN SECRETS William Alexander Atheneum March 2012 Ages 8+ The day began like any other in Southside, with sweepers whisking away street dust, dustfish swimming around sweepers, and Rownie waking up when Graba summons him to run an errand. Graba is a grandmother to many Southside children, but "grandmother" does not mean "mother's mother" or "father's mother" to any of them. Neither mothers nor fathers are a part of this household, and here the word grandmother simply means Graba, a powerful witch who walks on long and artificial bird-legs. The word "goblin" here means Tamlin rather than monster , and the word "brother" means someone who disappeared, suddenly, while hidden behind a mask. For Rownie the day ends very differently, with a theatrical performance outlawed by the Lord Mayor of All Zombay. After Rownie sets foot on a Tamlin stage, he is forced to face fearful curses, haunted masks, gearwork soldiers, and an outraged Graba. Rownie will do what he must, and wear masks of his own, to find a lost brother, a voice that speaks to rivers and holds back floods, and a place to belong. “Goblin Secrets is a knockout, in case I haven't made myself clear. It's an original, owing absolutely nothing to Tolkien, or to any of his descendants, disciples or imitators. As a lifelong sucker for theatre and books about theatre, I don't know a fantasy novel that's used performing and maskmaking in just that way.
