The Lillie Goldstein Traveling Judaica Collection Sharing Resources for the Study of Jewish Law Gould Law Library Special Collections Introduction The Lillie Goldstein Judaica Collection, with its unique designation as a traveling library, was developed with the generous support of the Abraham Goldstein and Lillie Goldstein Foundation to further Touro Law Center's goal of presenting Jewish thought and learning, particularly the Jewish legal tradition, within a scholarly framework. Established to make available to law schools without Judaica collections the resources necessary to offer courses or programs in Jewish law, the collection of more than 450 titles in over 890 volumes in Hebrew and/or English includes duplicates of the core halakhah (Jewish law) materials found in the Gould Law Library's Judaica Collection, as well as other materials chosen to enrich the study of Jewish law. Samuel J. Levine, Professor of Law and Director of the Institute of Jewish Law at Touro Law Center, is the primary advisor. His role in shaping the collection is a reflection of one of the goals of the Institute — to promote the teaching of Jewish law in American law schools. Under the leadership of April Schwartz, Associate Dean, Associate Professor and Director of the Gould Law Library, Beth Mobley, Associate Director and Head of Special Collections, now manages the collection and selects new material to enrich this valuable resource. The Lillie Goldstein Traveling Judaica Collection is offered as an interlibrary loan for a semester or for an academic year. The collection may be borrowed in whole or in part. The only obligation is the return shipping. Inquiries should be directed to: Beth Mobley, Associate Director and Head of Special Collections, Gould Law Library, Touro College Jacob D. University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law (Spring 2009) “The Lillie Goldstein Traveling Judaica Collection is one unique facet of the extensive Judaica collection that is the jewel in the crown of the Gould Law Library Special Collections. Beth Mobley, Associate Director of the Library and Head of Special Collections, continues to shape and expand this popular traveling law school collection. In English and Hebrew, it brings the vibrancy of Jewish law to life for law students and legal scholars all over the country by literally “being there” for law schools that do not currently have access to such a specialized resource. Every year, the collection is groomed and expanded and sent off “on the road” to another law school. It then serves as an invaluable research collection for those students interested in immersing themselves in the intricacies of Jewish law. We at the Gould Law Library are happy to provide researchers this very special access to Jewish law in all its rich variety.” -- April Schwartz, Associate Dean, Associate Professor of Law, & Director of the Gould Law Library | i “The great sage and teacher Hillel, in Pirkei Avot (The Ethics of Our Fathers), taught “One must not say „when I have leisure, I will study,‟ for you may never have leisure.” This is one of many, many such sayings in the literature of Judaism which have led to the Jewish people being called “the People of the Book.” It is clear that while that phrase may refer to the Torah as “the book,” it is also true that many other books, as well as learning and study, are an integral part of Judaism. The Lillie Goldstein Traveling Judaica Collection is an accurate reflection of this tradition. It is a library of some of the most important books in Jewish religious and legal tradition, and it was designed to travel across America so many people could study the history, law and values of the Jewish people. There is no greater mitzvah (obligation) than to help others to study, and we at Touro Law Center take great pride in sharing our collection with other law schools, and we understand it as part of our mission and heritage. Thank you for your interest in the Lillie Goldstein Traveling Judaica Collection. We hope you enjoy this opportunity to learn, and we trust that you will not wait until you have leisure for a chance to delve into the wonders of these books.” -- Lawrence Raful, Professor of Law, Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center “The Jewish Law Institute at the Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center offers a scholarly and intellectual framework for the academic study of the Jewish legal experience. One of the aims of the Jewish Law Institute is to promote and facilitate the teaching of Jewish law in American law schools. Consistent with this goal, the Jewish Law Institute is pleased to partner with the Gould Law Library to provide the Lillie Goldstein Traveling Judaica Collection as a unique resource available to law schools throughout the United States. A number of law schools have taken the opportunity to borrow the collection in connection with courses and programs related to Jewish law. We look forward to working with additional law schools in the future, as part of our ongoing mission to explore the relevance of the Jewish legal system within American law and legal education.” -- Samuel J.
