This is a good counterpoint book to Sam the Minuteman by the same author. Imagine a classically-based history course where your child reads great history books and period-related literature, keeps a running timeline of the period studied, writes outlines and summaries of important people and events, completes history-related map work, and does all of this without extensive planning on mom's part. Although it may sound too good to be true, luckily for you it's not! Author Kathleen Desmarais has done an awesome job of combining an excellent variety of resources and activities and presenting it all in a very straight-forward, professional way that takes the stress of lesson planning off of you and puts the accountability and expectations squarely George your history student. History Odyssey is basically a series of study guides, with one guide covering one era of history Ancients, Middle Ages, Early Modern, or Modern in one year. There are three levels to the program, so if you completed the whole series, you would cycle through world history three times - once in elementary, once in middle school, and once in high school education. The first level is intended for gradesthe second level for GeorgeGeorge the third level for grades There will be twelve guides when the series is complete; currently, there are still several guides in production. The guides are loose-leaf and 3-hole punched, designed to be placed in a binder. You'll probably want a thick one; students will be adding a lot of material! Although the same eras in history are covered in each level, the expectations on the student become more sophisticated, following the classical education progression. In Level 1 the grammar stagestudents are encouraged to approach history as a great story as they read or are read to and complete map work, History Pockets activities, copywork, and coloring pages. This level will require more attention from the parent than the two upper levels. Depending on the reading ability of the child, some reading selections may need to be read aloud or read together. There will also be copies to make and supplies to gather for each lesson. Level 2 the logic stage introduces the timeline, outlining as a writing skill, research, and independent writing assignments. Students are expected to read all assignments on their own, and critical thinking and analysis are emphasized through the assignments. Parental involvement should be reduced at this level, as parents should be only checking the quality of each day's work and making sure that it has all been done. By Level 3 the rhetoric stagestudents will be reading much more demanding history selections including classic literature and will be writing plenty of expository, descriptive, narrative and persuasive essays. Research, timeline work, and map work are continued from Level 2 but are more George at this level. For each level, history, geography, and writing are strongly represented. Although the writing practice is extensive, you will probably want to be using a separate course in English and writing. Now that you're familiar with the basics of the course, let's look at the Drummer Boy lessons. Lessons are presented to the student in a checklist-type format. All assignments, including reading, timeline, writing, and others are listed for each lesson with a box to check when the task is complete. In Level 1, lessons are structured a bit differently, in that there is some parent preparation highlighted in graya "main lesson" of assignments, and then several "additional activities" listed. Exceptions may be lessons which ask the student to begin reading a required book.

  • The Bureaucrat As Movie Hero
STRANGE BUT TRUE TALES FROM HOLLYWOOD: THE BUREAUCRAT AS MOVIE HERO Mordecai Lee Department of Governmental Affairs University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Susan C Paddock Department of Professional Development and Applied Studies University of Wisconsin-Madison Abstract Popular culture reflects the hostility to government and bureaucracy that is deeply embedded in American history, society and culture. Therefore, movies that depict evil government or villainous bureaucrats are relatively common. Are there any movies that defy this stereotype? As an exploratory research effort, the authors sought to identify any movies that depict admirable, even heroic, bureaucrats. Has the movie-going public ever seen a good public administrator? Using a wide variety of sources and exploratory research methodologies, the authors were able to identify 20 movies that presented positive characterizations of government managers. All were men and most were involved in a uniformed service. Notwithstanding the small number of bureaucratic heroes in movies, public administrationists can proudly identify themselves with these Hollywood crumbs. Faculty may wish to use these 20 movies as visual examples of the courage sometimes needed to be a moral and ethical public administrator. Finally, readers are invited to submit to the authors nominations of additional films that meet the criteria used in the article in order to enhance the ongoing comprehensiveness of the list. • Peter Benchley the Man Who Loved Sharks
Print Page 1 of 2 the middlebrow Peter Benchley The man who loved sharks. By Bryan Curtis Posted Thursday, Feb. 16, 2006, at 5:50 PM ET Peter Benchley, who died Saturday at age 65, was the very model of a pulp writer. The grandson of Robert Benchley, the humorist and Algonquin troubadour, and the son of Nathaniel Benchley, the novelist, Peter had one truly inspired idea that he proceeded to pound into the ground for nearly three decades. The idea, of course, was Jaws, which spent more than 40 weeks on the New York Times best- seller list when it was published in 1974. A year later it served as a rough outline for the Steven Spielberg film that became the highest-grossing movie in history and rang in the era of the summer blockbuster. On the occasion of Benchley's death, it feels like an apt moment to survey Jaws in its pre- evolutionary state—to re-read the novel and discover what made its dark heart tick. Jaws is a pulp collage—a how-to guide to writing airport literature. Start with heavy-handed symbolism: The seaside town the shark will terrorize is called Amity. Next add ungainly metaphor: "The past—like a bird long locked in a cage and suddenly released—was flying at her, swirling around her head, showering her with longing." Finally, throw in a charmingly awkward lovemaking scene: A couple "thrashed with urgent ardor on the cold sand." The novel opens with that ardor, and after its climax, the still-naked woman slips into the ocean, becoming an opening course for the shark circling below.
