BEST FACTORY KNIVES OF BLADE’S FIRST 40 YEARS Table of Contents Chapter 1 Best Factory Knives 1973-1988 Chapter 2 Best Factory Knives 1989-2000 Chapter 3 Best Factory Knives 2001-2012 Chapter 1 Best Factory Knives 1973-1988 They may have been your father’s knives or your grandfather’s knives—they may even be your knives. To help celebrate its 40th anniversary, BLADE released a three-part series recognizing the top 40 factory knives over that span (1973-2013). The first chapter pinpoints the top factory knives from 1973-88. We compiled a list of some top factory knives over that stretch and submitted them to a panel of veteran knife observers and asked them to select their top five to 10—or however many they felt comfortable choosing. Though “top factory knives” can be subjective, we determined a top factory knife is one that excelled in terms of setting a standard that other companies attempted to emulate, and/or excelled in quality of craftsmanship, originality and creativity—or both. We no doubt inadvertently omitted knives that should be included. As a result, we asked our panel members to add those and rank them in their lists, too. The panel members: knife writers James Morgan Ayres, BLADE field editor Kim Breed, Durwood Hollis, Blade Magazine Cutlery Hall-Of-Fame member Bernard Levine and Mac Overton; Pete Cohan, former curator of the National Knife Museum; writer/photographer Terrill Hoffman; Roy Huntington, editor of American Handgunner Magazine; and Rick Thronburg of William Henry. Some of the knives ranked herein were made before 1973.

Recently, he has presented a series of kitchen knives that look extremely sympathetic and also released custom knives like Monte Carlo and Casino. Well, there seems to be a theme there. Common to all of these knives are a restrained design language and elegance. Very elegant knives as said but they are far from as bold as say models like Amok or Crash from his early years. That goes for the collaborations as well. In the beginning, knives such as Spyderco Zulu, Böker 67 and Albatross were representative of that segment. Nowadays, the models that are released are somewhat less challenging but also more practical I would argue. This is a good example of that. The model is called Ziggy and comes from Fox Knives. However, the detection of these metallic objects in videos faces an important Revised 15 October 2018 problem: their surface reflectance under medium to high illumination conditions blurs their shapes in Accepted 15 October 2018 the image and hence makes their detection impossible. The objective of this work is two-fold: (i) To de- Available online 15 November 2018 velop an automatic cold steel weapon detection model for video surveillance using Convolutional Neural Communicated by Prof. Zidong Wang Networks(CNN) and (ii) strengthen its robustness to light conditions by proposing a brightness guided preprocessing procedure called DaCoLT (Darkening and Contrast at Learning and Test stages). The ob- Keywords: Cold steel weapon detection tained detection model provides excellent results as cold steel weapon detector and as automatic alarm Convolutional Neural Networks system in video surveillance. The SXB, or Skullcrusher’s X-treme Blade, was designed by EJ Snyder. He is an extreme survivalist, a decorated Army Combat Vet, and a 3 time Naked and Afraid participant. He had one major goal: build a tool to aid in surviving the toughest challenges the world has to offer. His life experiences ultimately led him to design such a knife. Every part of its design was carefully thought out from the tip to the Skullcrusher on the pommel. Whether on the battlefield or in the harshest terrain, this beast will get you through any tough situation. #TOPSKnives SXB Skullcrusher’s X-treme Blade www.topsknives.com facebook.com/TOPSknivesofficial DEALER INQUIRIES WELCOME Call for a FREE catalog P.O.
