  • The Book of Mormon Keystone of My Life!
The Book of Mormon Keystone of my life! ¾ Keystone of Our Religion We all know the Book of Mormon is the keystone of our religion. As the Prophet Joseph Smith stated on the introduction page, “…. I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on the earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man (or woman) would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book.” In October Conference 1986, Elder Boyd K. Packer stated, “…true doctrine understood, changes attitudes and behavior. The study of the doctrines of the Gospel will improve behavior quicker than a study of behavior will improve behavior.” ¾ A Remarkable Difference As I have grown in the gospel and also watched my children grow in the gospel I have noticed a remarkable difference as we have studied the Book of Mormon. Any study of Christ and his life will bring you closer to the Lord, but there is a power in the Book of Mormon like no other book. In 1980, when we were young parents Marion G. Romney in his April conference address said, “....I believe that if, in our homes, parents will read from the Book of Mormon prayerfully and regularly, both by themselves and with their children, the spirit of that great book will come to permeate our homes and all who dwell therein. The spirit of reverence will increase; mutual respect and consideration for each other will grow. The spirit of contention will depart. Parents will counsel their children in greater love and wisdom.

See the attached description of FSY conferences for more information. Beginning in 2021 and 2022, all stakes in the U.S. and Canada will participate in FSY conferences every other year. During 2020, a smaller number of FSY conferences will be held at locations in the U.S. and Canada to prepare for full implementation. Attached is the list of stakes participating in 2020. If your stake has been selected to participate in FSY in 2020, please do not plan treks or youth conferences to be held during that year. Young Women and Young Men camps may be held annually, as usual. • Premortal Spirits: Implications for Cloning, Abortion, Evolution, and Extinction
Premortal Spirits: Implications for Cloning, Abortion, Evolution, and Extinction Kent C. Condie /~\ny organism (animal or plant) living on Earth today or any organism that lived on Earth in the geologic past is largely the product of its genes, which in turn are inherited from two parents—or, in the case of asexual re- production, one parent. No other parents can produce this organism. Hence, if each organism is patterned precisely after a spiritual precursor, as we are commonly led to believe by some interpretations of Moses 3:5, only one set of parents can produce this organism in the temporal world. Car- ried further, this scenario means that all of our spouses and children are predestined from the spirit world and that we really have not exercised free agency in selecting a mate or in having children in this life. It also means that each plant and animal that has ever lived on Earth was predestined to come from one or two specific parents. This would also seem to require that events in Earth history are predestined, because specific events are necessary to bring predestined individuals into contact with each other in the right time frame. But how can a predestined or deterministic temporal world be consis- tent with traditional LDS belief in free agency? From the very onset of the restoration of the LDS Church, Joseph Smith taught that God "did not elect or predestinate." As Bruce R. McConkie states, "Predestination is the false doctrine that from all eternity God has ordered whatever comes to pass." Determinism advocates that all earthly events are controlled by prior events (usually in the premortal existence), but not necessarily by God.

“Thou Wast Chosen Lesson Before Thou Wast Born ” 2 Abraham 3; Moses 4:1–4 Purpose To help class members understand the doctrine of foreordination and their own responsibility to help build up the kingdom of God and bring souls to Christ. Preparation 1. Prayerfully study the following scriptures from the Pearl of Great Price and the Doctrine and Covenants: a. Abraham 3:11 –12, 22 –23; Doctrine and Covenants 138:53 –57. Abraham talks with the Lord face to face and learns that in the premortal life many “noble and great ” spirits were foreordained to their mortal missions (Abraham 3:11 –12, 22 –23). President Joseph F. Smith learns more about the “noble and great ones ” in a vision of the Savior ’s visit to the spirit world before His Resurrection (D&C 138:53 –57). b. Abraham 3:24 –28; Moses 4:1 –4. Abraham and Moses are shown in vision that Jesus Christ was chosen in the Council in Heaven to be our Savior and that we chose to follow him. They are also shown that Lucifer (Satan) and the spirits who followed him were cast out of heaven. 2. Additional reading: Isaiah 14:12 –15; Revelation 12:7 –9; Alma 13:3 –5; Doc- trine and Covenants 29:36 –39; and the rest of Abraham 3 and Doctrine and Covenants 138. April 2011 No. 8 Dean’s Message Chapter Officers A little over a year ago, I was struck with the impression that I would soon be serving as the Dean Florence Hawkinson dean of our AGO chapter. To help this thought settle within me, I started asking myself [email protected] what I would want to have happen within our chapter. W hat was important to me? W hat was important to our chapter members? W hat was important to the organization? A few Sub-Dean things came to my mind immediately. Some other ideas have come “in process of time.” Ruth Eldredge [email protected] One thing that was clear to me from the beginning was that I definitely wanted to continue Registrar two of my favorite annual chapter traditions: the Member Bach Recital and the Super David Chamberlin Saturday Organ Training W orkshop. I am very pleased with the way our chapter has [email protected] responded to these events this year. Secretary th Miranda Wilcox Our Member Bach Recital, held March 25 , was a tremendous success. I believe all the [email protected] performers put forth their best efforts to create an evening filled with beautiful music, and the feeling of friendship and respect between chapter members was evident throughout Newsletter Editor the evening.

Comes ly Fi mi r a st F A Workbook to Transform the Justice System by Partnering With Families tice & T e h Jus Alli out anc r Y e F fo o n r Y g The Campaign for Youth Justice i ou a (CFYJ) is a national nonprofit organization t p working to end the practice of trying, sentencing, h m a and incarcerating youth in the adult criminal justice system. Ju Part of our work involves improving the juvenile justice system and s C t i e ensuring that youth and families have a voice in justice system reform c efforts. Through these efforts we have seen and heard first-hand the trouble e T that families face when dealing with the justice system and were approached by the Annie E. Casey Foundation to write this publication. CFYJ was started in 2005 by a family member whose child was being prosecuted in the adult system. Since our founding, we have placed a significant emphasis on making sure that youth and families who have been directly affected by the justice system are involved in our advocacy efforts. Becoming more family-focused means that everyone, including advocacy organizations such as ours, need to start working differently. We are responsive to families by making a concerted effort to meet the needs of families who call our offices looking for help, and we involve family members in discussions around our strategic goals and initiatives. One of the major components of our work is staffing and supporting the Alliance for Youth Justice, formerly known as the National Parent Caucus.
