Yom Kippur Reflect

Can you remember what we learnt in our last lesson? In our last lesson, we learnt about , one of the holiest days in Jewish culture . It means “head of the year”. It marks the creation of the world and the beginning of the Days of Awe - a 10 day period. The sounding of the is an important part of this celebration. It represents repenting (saying sorry) for their sins.

Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the Jewish year. It's the day of atonement (free from sins) after the Jewish new year. On this day, the Jews ask for God’s forgiveness for their sins. It's also known as the Sabbath of the Sabbaths. It is a day to reflect on the past year. Jews do not work or go to school on this day.

Have you ever asked for forgiveness? The story of Yom Kippur.

When the Israelite’s (people of Israel) left Egypt, they went to Mount Sinai. Moses climbed to the top of the mountain and God gave him two tablets with the Ten Commandments on them. The first commandment told people that they should not worship anyone other than God. However, when Moses went down the mountain, he found the Israelites worshiping a golden calf (baby of a cow). Moses was so angry that he threw the sacred tablets on the floor and they shattered. The Israelites then atoned (amended the mistakes) for their wrong doing. God forgave them and gave Moses a second set of tablets

What does atonement mean? Atonement means to amend/correct doing something wrong after feeling sorry for doing it. It’s being free from sins. How is Yom Kippur celebrated?

The Days of Awe The ten days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are called The Days of Repentance or Days of Awe. During these days, Jews think about everything they have done in the past year. If they've done something wrong, they can try to put it right, ask for God's forgiveness, and promise not to do it again. They blow the shofar to ask for forgiveness. Jews also give money to charity. What is the importance of this day? The Day of Yom Kippur Jews mark the day of Yom Kippur by (not eating anything) for 25 hours. They wear white colour clothes and no make-up, perfume, or leather shoes. The most important part of Yom Kippur is the time spent in the Synagogue. Even Jews who do not go to the synagogue very much, will go on Yom Kippur. The day is spent in continuous prayer

There are two meals taken during Yom Kippur: the pre-fast meal and the break–fast meal. No food or drink is allowed for the duration of the fast. The pre-fast meal is known as seudah ha-mafaseket. It means “meal of separation” or concluding meal. Some recipe choices include rice, challah (round bread), chicken or fish. Meals are usually prepared with less salt to avoid dehydration (a condition when your body does not have as much water as it needs). The break-fast meal usually consist of high carb and sugary foods. Some families have traditional meals with soup and brisket (a cut of meat).
