Course Overview

This embroidery course provides an overview of the embroidery concepts and techniques. It comprises of a combination of traditional and primary hand embroidery stitches. Typically, trainees need to bring their own equipment, including embroidery floss, needles and . Trainees learn the most common and simplest embroidery stitches used to decorate fabric. This course involves hand-stitching, but there may be some discussion about the use of digital embroidery machines. Trainees also learn to create original designs, so they can be used repeatedly on clothing, table cloth, bed sheets and pillow case.

Duration of course: 10 months

SYLLABUS:

Manufacture of items:

1. Health and safety in the workplace:  An understanding of the choice, purchase, safe use and care of small equipment during the course.

2. Processes:  Identify proper embroidery threads not limited to double twist and fine threads.  Identify and practice of hand embroidery stitches:  Back stitch  Button hole stitch   Lazy daisy stitch   Stem stitch  Cross stitch   French and bullions stitch

 Knowledge of textile fabric type;  Differentiate fabrics type for events and design type.  Work out design/motifs in appropriate fabrics.  Apply right colour combination theory.  Demonstration of embroidery stitches.  Ability to differentiate the sequences of the same type of hand embroidery on different type of fabrics. The trainees should not limit themselves to light weight fabrics only.  Cutting and sewing techniques.  Folding techniques.  Making of corners.

 Edge finishes:  Hems (hand or machine stitched),  Bindings (crossway strips and commercial binding),  Cutting and joining crossway strips,  Edged finishing using embroidery stitches.  The trainee should apply different folding techniques and making of corners.

 Pressing  Ironing and fusing process.  Pressing of textile items during and after construction.

 Identify basic sewing stitches and seams:  Hand-worked stitches: Tailor-tacking, tacking, even and uneven stitch, hemming, -stitch, loop-stitch, and bar tack.  Machined stitches: Straight stitch, zigzag, buttonholes, over locking, decorative stitches, over casting, bar tack.  Seams: Plain (to include various methods of neatening), French, flat felt seam, top stitching and over lock.

3. Assessments: At the end of the course, the trainee:  Should produce at least 6 to 8 finished products for the assessments (handkerchief, bed spread, and pillow case, bridge set showing “Chinese” embroidery, table runner different size and shape, frame / portfolio, all items must have a combination of traditional hand embroidery.

4. Entrepreneurial skills: The trainer helps the women in developing entrepreneurial skills. Empower them to be self- dependent, and encourage them in being entrepreneurs and to start a small home-base business. They can also group together to manufacture items to be sold on both regional and international exhibitions.
