This study assesses the effect of shifting cultivation cycles on soil quality in the North-eastern Himalayan region using a minimum of soil properties. To achieve this goal, a soil quality index (SQI) approach and multivariate techniques were used for surface (0-30 cm) and subsurface (30-70 cm) layers of soils in the forest, jhum land, and jhum fallow areas. The highest variability among land uses was found for clay content, SOC (soil organic carbon), exchangeable Mg and K, CEC (cation exchange capacity), and the Ca/Mg relationship. On the contrary, the lowest variation was recorded in bulk density (BD), porosity, and pH.

In this paper, Acutogordius sulawensis is reported for the first time in this country, with new locality records of some Chordodes, Gordius and Acutogordius species from the north-east region of India. The total number of nematomorph species now known from India is thus raised to twenty-two species. This paper supplements information about nematomorph species added to the Indian fauna after 2004. Keywords: Gordiida; biodiversity; Acutogordius 1. Introduction Around 360 species of Nematomorpha are known today [1]. New species are described constantly, but the geographical coverage of records is still very fragmentary. More intensive sampling often reveals an increase in records. One of these countries is India, where, until 2004, only 13 species of Gordiida (the terrestrial/freshwater Nematomorpha) and one undetermined Gordius were known [2]. With one exception and one additional undetermined Gordius species, all Indian gordiid species were reported prior to 1912.

Hatt. has been described along with mature sporophytes for the first time from Nagaland state. This taxon has been previously reported from Sikkim Himalaya (Inoue, 1964). Therefore, the present investigation shows the extension of distributional range from Sikkim to Naga- land state (rediscovered after a gap of 49 years). Hand drawing illustrations have been provided for its identification. Introduction Plagiochilion S. Hatt. belonging to the family Plagiochilaceae was seg- regated from the genus Plagiochila by Hattori (1947). The genus Plagi- ochilion S. Hatt, was later accepted by Inoue (1958) and Schuster (1959). In India, the genus Plagiochilion is poorly understood and so far no inten- sive work has been done on this taxon. The genus Plagiochilion are dis- tinct from the genus Plagiochila in having opposite and connate leaves, rhizoids are fasciculate and restricted to near the postical of leaves, and the branching of stem is predominantly intercalary and postical (Inoue, 1964). Inoue (1964) has described the species P. mayebarae S. Hatt. and reported the occurrence of the taxa from Sikkim Himalaya from Kurseong, Nagkli, Singalelak, Jongli and Senchal. Therefore, the present investigation on the genus Plagiochilion sporophytes have been described for the first time and the occurrence of the genus Plagiochilion is an un- 23 known hitherto to the North East Indian Sub-Himalayan region.
