An acquisitive division, by the time of the divestment announcement, it was reckoned by iC’s sister magazine International Rental News to be the fi fth largest rental franchise in North America. Th e rationale for selling it was similar to Volvo’s divestment of its Aero business in 2012, in that it wanted the group to have a tighter core focus on machinery with diesel engines at their heart. And while the US$ 1.1 billion selling price will have swollen the company’s coff ers, where does it leave Volvo CE in terms of making in-roads into the globally expanding equipment rental sector? “Th e rental business is about selling to independent rental houses now we no longer own Volvo Rents, and working with our distribution network to feed their rental fl eets to provide services to the customers,” said Mr Weissburg. He continued, “We approach this primarily with and through our Volvo CE distributors. Th ey typically have in-house rental fl eets and/or leasing companies to provide mid-term, long-term and even short-term rentals, rental purchase options and so on. In addition, we as Volvo sell through our dealers to the large rental houses as well. “So we utilise both channels, but the traditional equipment distributor is increasingly coming into the rental business as well. We as the equipment supplier are very well aligned to support them in that process. Not just for the right cost/benefi t spec of the product, but also as the Volvo Group, we have invested very heavily in the Volvo Financial Services (VFS) company, with about a US$ 20 billion portfolio today. Th is includes the introduction of its own series of products such as its latest icon builder 60 and icon robot 60 for automated measuring and positioning tasks. He pointed to a clear trend of younger “Nintendo generation” project managers who had engaged with latest techniques such as using computer- based tablet planning of surveying tasks and BIM computer-based monitoring of construction site surveying. >

With the Stage IV/Tier 4 Final emissions laws coming into force, engine manufacturers have been hard at work to meet tough pollution limits. Sarah McCay takes a closer look at some of the new, lean, clean and effi cient engines hitting the market

egislation on exhaust emissions has been focusing the minds of diesel engine manufacturers for years, and 2014 L will be remembered for regulation landmarks, with Stage IV coming into force in Europe and the equivalent US Tier 4 Final and Japanese Stage 4. Although this is the end of the road for now, a further Stage V is in the works for implementation around 2019. Th is is likely to regulate engines with power outputs not covered by the current standards, as well as tightening the requirements on particulate matter (PM) emissions. PM has been the focus of the last two rounds of emissions reduction along with nitrous oxide (NOx). Th e current levels being achieved put the concentrations of pollutants emerging from exhaust pipes around the same level as the ambient air in many cities. In fact, many engine manufacturers will say – only half jokingly – that their engines now act as air cleaners in some places. However, legislators feel there is still more to do. Research shows that it is the extremely fi ne particles – those many times smaller than the thickness of a human hair – that cause the most health issues, and it is these that will be regulated. Current laws place limits on the weight of particles that can be emitted, but Bobcat is risk of thermal damage and do not require ash cleaning, it said, in future this is likely to shift to a mechanism that will control introducing its adding that non-DPF engines also had fewer service needs and the number of fi ne particles, possibly by some sort of count per own Stage IV off ered better fuel economy. unit of mass. engines and Bobcat is part of the Doosan group, and the new non-DPF But that is a concern for the future. Automotive manufacturer Scania announced that its industrial engines were ready for EU Stage IV in early 2014. Its new engine range has been developed with EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) and SCR (selective catalytic reduction) technology. Scania has also opted for a non-DPF engine, which reduces the unit’s footprint. Available in 9-litre, 13-litre and 16-litre capacities, the new Scania engines all have the same installation dimensions. Scania said its new engines off ered high uptime, generous torque at low revs, good fuel economy and prompt engine response. All three engines feature the same cylinder design, and share the same cylinder heads, replaceable liners and many of the moving parts, designed to make them easy to repair and maintain. Th e DC09, DC13 and DC16 engines will be used in agriculture, mining and material handling equipment as well as construction machines. Field testing Cummins has recently completed a two-year fi eld test programme on its Stage IV engines, logging 140,000 hours. Th e manufacturer has put 70 machines to test, working under tough duty cycles and extreme temperatures, to provide an insight into engine performance ahead of the manufacturer entering into full production. hell Global Solutions has developed a range of heavy- duty diesel engine oils that are designed to react and S adapt to challenging operating conditions. The Shell Rimula engine oils have been tested extensively in what Hans Wildeboer, product application specialist at Shell Global Solutions, called “real-world scenarios, working with equipment manufacturers to meet and exceed their demands”. The latest formulas, Shell Rimula R5 LE, Shell Rimula R4 X and Shell Rimula R4 L, offer long oil drain intervals, which helps to cut back on the time and cost associated with oil changes, and keeps equipment available for longer. Shell Rimula R5 LE is a semi-synthetic heavy-duty diesel engine oil. In fact, up to 38 generators can fi t in a single 40 foot container,” said Mr Garnham. Another common design feature across the QS range is a single piece steel roof on the canopy, which helps to stop water getting in. The four mid-range generators – the G65QS, G90QS, G115QS and G140QS – are powered by JCB’s four cylinder Dieselmax Stage IIIA engine, providing very low noise levels. Features include a 285 litre fuel tank, for up to 12 hours of continuous operation. The most powerful models in the QS range meanwhile, the G165QS, G200QS and the G220QS, are powered by JCB’s six-cylinder Dieselmax engine, which the company says delivers a 7% fuel saving over the earlier QX range and using as much as -8% less fuel than competitive generators. The QS machines can be supplied with JCB’s Live Link telematics system.

The DYNAVIS® effect for fl eets: XXL Savings

Giovanni Maffi a, Nuova Ghizzoni S.p.A. manager for Engines & Equipment, was curious: How much fuel could he save, when fi lling their fl eet of excavators with a DYNAVIS® formul- ated hydraulic fl uid instead of the formerly used conventional monograde oil? Nuova Ghizzoni, specialized in the construction of pipelines, was using a fl eet of 14 excavators to restore the topsoil of a pipeline, spanning 144 kilometers. The DYNAVIS® competence team of Evonik went to Parma and started the test.

Few weeks later the results were out: an average reduction of fuel consumption of 9.38%, equalling monthly savings of 10,215.– EUR for the whole fl eet. Plus: impressive improvements of the excavator handling and better cold start abilities. Or to sum it up in Giovanni Maffi a’s words: “The hydraulic fl uid with DYNAVIS® additive is a good choice!” Visit us on
