The Painted Desert Respite
MJ APPROVED: TRAVEL The Painted Desert Respite The Saguaro, Scottsdale With its sandstone buildings and the rocky Sonoran desert surrounding it, Scottsdale, Arizona isn’t exactly known for eye-popping color. That’s why the Saguaro hotel, a 1960s motel renovated with vivid hues inspired by indigenous flora – not to mention mod design elements like solid-colored walls, light woods, and black-and-white photos of local cacti – makes a strong first impression. The 5.5.-acre property, however, offers more than good looks (as well as firm-but-comfy beds in spacious rooms with flatscreen TVs and iPod docks). It’s located in the city’s historic “old town” district and literally next door to the performing arts center, but inside the gates a party is going on. At least that’s one way to describe the lively, expertly DJ-ed pool scene, and you’ll want a room with a view of one of the two palm-lined swimming holes. ‘Iron Chef’ Jose Garces helms the in-house restaurant, Distrito, and he’s brought a Mexico City-style cuisine, full of bright flavors and fresh ingredients, to a spot that could have easily settled for another “New American eatery.” We frequented the area to tour Frank Lloyd Wright’s home and school Taliesin West, which is a short drive away, as well as to swing our drivers on some of the finest fairways in the southwest, especially at the Troon North Golf Club, which sprawls around natural ravines and boulders. Back at the hotel, which draws a hip, youthful adult crowd and may offer you a room with a cow’s skull on a side table, we enjoyed a powerful glass of rye at Garces’ bar Old Town Whiskey, which specializes in Americana-style spirits. -

Stehr ([email protected]) Abstract. Andean watersheds present important snowfall accumulation mainly during the winter which is later melted during spring and part of the summer. The effect of snowmelt on the water balance can be critical to sustain agriculture activities, 10 hydropower generation, urban water supply and wildlife. In Chile 25% of the territory between the Valparaiso and Araucanía Regions comprise areas where snow precipitation occurs. As in many other difficult-to-access regions of the world, in the Chilean Andes there is a lack of hydrological data like discharge, snow courses, snow depths, which complicate the analysis of important hydrological processes (e.g. water availability). Remote sensing provides a promising opportunity to enhance the assessment and monitoring of the spatial and temporal variability of snow characteristics, like Snow Cover Area (SCA) and 15 Snow Cover Dynamic (SCD). In the above mentioned context the objectives of this study are to evaluate the suitability of MOD10A2 to estimate SCA and to assess SCD at five watersheds (Aconcagua, Rapel, Maule, Biobío and Toltén) located in the Chilean Andes, between latitude 32.0ºS and 39.5ºS. -

One of Five West Coast, Low-Latitude Deserts of the World, the Namib Extends Along the Entire Namibian Coastline in an 80-120 Km Wide Belt
N A M I B I A G 3 E 0 O 9 1 L - O Y G E I V C R A U S L NAMIB DESERT Source: Roadside Geology of Namibia One of five west coast, low-latitude deserts of the world, the Namib extends along the entire Namibian coastline in an 80-120 km wide belt. Its extreme aridity is the result of the cold, upwelling Benguela Current, which flows up the west coast of Africa as far as Angola, and because of its low temperatures induces very little evaporation and rainfall (<50 mm per year). It does, however, create an up to 50 km wide coastal fog belt providing sufficient moisture for the development of a specialist flora and fauna, many of which are endemic to the Namib. In addition, the lagoons at Walvis Bay and Sandwich Harbour are designated wetlands of international importance, because of their unique setting and rich birdlife, including flamingo, white pelican and Damara tern. Larger mammals like the famed desert elephant, black rhino, lion, cheetah and giraffe can be found along the northern rivers traversing the Skeleton Coast National Park. Geomorphologically, the Namib includes a variety of landscapes, including classic sand dunes, extensive gravel plains, locally with gypcrete and calcrete duricrusts, elongated salt pans, ephemeral watercourses forming linear oases, inselbergs and low mountain ranges. Along the coast, wind-swept sandy beaches alternate with rocky stretches, in places carved into striking rock formations (e.g. Bogenfels Arch). Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013, the “Namib Sand Sea“ between Lüderitz and the Kuiseb River encompasses such well-known landmarks as Sossusvlei and Sandwich Harbour, while the fabled Skeleton Coast north of the Ugab River is notorious for its numerous ship wrecks. -

IMPACT OF MOUNTAINS: Himalayas: •The Himalayas are a mountain range with some of the tallest peaks in the entire world. •They have a significant impact on life in southwest China and northwest India. •Hydroelectric power plants have been built on glaciers throughout the Himalayas continued: •India is separated from the rest of Asia on three sides by mountain ranges. •On India’s side of the Himalayas, the high mountains trap rain clouds, so rainforests and grasslands can be found. •The Chinese side of the icy Himalayas receives very little rainfall and the population is much lower here. Tibetan Plateau: •The Tibetan Plateau covers the majority of western China and is the world’s highest plateau at 14,800 feet above sea level. •Because of the region’s extremely high elevations, it has been nicknamed “the roof of the world”. •Many of Asia’s major rivers begin in the Tibetan Plateau, and are fed by more than 30,000 glaciers that are located here. •In this region, summers are very short and winters are long and extremely cold. •During the few warmer months, farmers are able to let livestock graze in the region’s grasslands. -

Lucchitta U.S. Geological Survey 1 Pine Island Glacier Review 5 July 1999 N:\PIGars-13.wp6 Abstract The Pine Island Glacier ice-drainage basin has often been cited as the part of the West Antarctic ice sheet most prone to substantial retreat on human time-scales. Here we review the literature and present new analyses showing that this ice-drainage basin is glaciologically unusual, in particular; due to high precipitation rates near the coast Pine Island Glacier basin has the second highest balance flux of any extant ice stream or glacier; tributary ice streams flow at intermediate velocities through the interior of the basin and have no clear onset regions; the tributaries coalesce to form Pine Island Glacier which has characteristics of outlet glaciers (e.g. high driving stress) and of ice streams (e.g. shear margins bordering slow-moving ice); the glacier flows across a complex grounding zone into an ice shelf coming into contact with warm Circumpolar Deep Water which fuels the highest basal melt-rates yet measured beneath an ice shelf; the ice front position may have retreated within the past few millennia but during the last few decades it appears to have shifted around a mean position. -

Veenendaal supported by PREFACE II Fire and its effects on vegetation in the Okavango Delta, BoBotttswanaswana Preface The present MSc-Thesis (Diplomarbeit) describes the results of a one-year project about the effects of fire on vegetation, with special focus on the Okavango Delta region, Botswana. The study is based on a new initiated research co-operation between Harry Oppenheimer Okavango Research Centre (HOORC) in Maun, Botswana, part of University of Botswana and the Chair of Vegetation Ecology of the Technische Universität München (TUM), Germany funded by Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft within their programme “Forschung für Naturräume“ for young scientists. Under the topic “Elements in Conflict - Anthropogenic fires in the RAMSAR-wetland Okavango-Delta (Botswana)”, prerequisites were set for future co- operative research projects between HOORC and TUM during August 2000 to August 2001. Besides the theoretical introduction to the ecology of the study area ‘Okavango Delta’, this period was primarily used to gain first practical experience on the vegetation and the fire ecology of the Okavango Delta during the stays in Botswana in October 2000 and March/April/Mai 2001.
