The tools needed to restore disaster-ravaged lives aren’t always hammers and nails.

The hurt of disaster cuts much deeper than the eye can see. That’s why a caring touch and understanding can sometimes be the most powerful tools of all. When lives need rebuilding, The Salvation Army knows it takes much more than the tools that come from the hardware store...it takes the tools that come from the heart. So please give generously. Just last year, Fort Carson lost one Soldier, who was struck while camping. Already this year, lightning has struck Colorado Springs police officers. “People think that just because they’re inside, they’re protected,” said Hutchinson. “They’re safer than being outside, of course, but their safety is not guaranteed if they’re around electrical equipment and the building is not lightning protected. Being on the telephone during a thunderstorm is especially dangerous.” Hutchinson also warns about a phenomenon called the “bolt from the blue.” “Once a thunderstorm passes, everyone thinks they’re clear,” he said. “If you hear thunder or see a flash, count to 30. If you hear thunder within that time, the potential remains to get struck. With the bolt from the blue, the bolt comes from the back of the cloud that just passed and can reach up to 25 miles.” “Anytime a thunderstorm approaches, you should take precautions,” said Hutchinson. “On Fort Carson we have “Giant Voice,” we hear it go when lightning is in the area. Anytime you hear that you should try to stay inside and outside activities should be curtailed until the storm passes.” Visit www.lightningsafety.noaa.gov for more information about lightning safety. 20 MOUNTAINEER — July 31, 2008 Community

Fred Hutto was a four-sport player during his high school days and since joining the Army he continues to enjoy playing sports. He is a member of his unit’s softball team and can be seen making many special plays for his team. His father got him started in sports when he was four years old and he hasn’t stopped yet. What sports did you play growing up? I played baseball, football, pole vaulted in track and wrestled. What would you consider your favorite sport? Baseball! I just loved the game from the time I played it. It got to the point where I would just not miss a game. I was the kind of person that would play two or three games a day if I could. What is your best personal sports moment? In high school my school got to the semifinals in baseball, but we lost. I took it pretty bad. We were winning the whole game and then there was an error that pretty much cost us the chance to win. It was my senior year and even though we lost the game, it was a great game to have played in. What really made it so special is that it was my last game in high school so I will never forget it. What other moment do you remember in sports? A guy I played with in high school is a good pitcher for the University of South Carolina right now and I remember hitting a home run off him when we were playing little league ball. What would you change in sports today? Professional baseball needs instant replay. Sometimes it seems like it is so obvious how the play was not called right. Whenever your team gets a really bad call, you just wish that instant replay was available so the call could be reversed to what it should be. When you are a diehard fan of a team you just want to see the calls go the right way. Photo by Walt Johnson
