In the Year One Thousand Nine Hundred and Fifty-Five.

Resolve providing for a mural in commemoration of COLONEL THOMAS CASS AND THE OFFICERS AND MEN OF THE NINTH REGIMENT OF INFANTRY, MASSACHUSETTS VOL- UNTEERS, FOR SERVICES RENDERED TO THE STATE AND NATION DURING THE CIVIL WAR, AND TO PERPETUATE THE GLORIOUS TRADITIONS OF THAT REGIMENT.

1 Whereas, The commonwealth of Massachusetts honors 2 the faithful services of her sons who formed a part of 3 the land and sea forces of the in suppress- -4 ing the War of the Rebellion, maintaining the integrity 5 of the nation and Union of States, and emancipating a 6 race of people from slavery; and 7 Whereas, Among her sons was Colonel Thomas Cass, 8 organizer and first commander of the Ninth Regiment 9 of Infantry, Massachusetts Volunteers, who gave his life 10 in defence of the flag and whose regiment established a 11 record of gallantry and devotion to duty; and 12 Whereas, The glorious traditions of that regiment 13 have been exemplified in times of peace and in times of 14 national peril in the Spanish-American War, on Mexican 15 Border Service, and in World Wars I and II by the 16 valiant successors of the original regiment, namely, the 17 Ninth Regiment of Infantry, Massachusetts Volunteer 18 Militia, the Ninth Regiment of Massachusetts Infantrv, > HOUSE No. 1988. 19 United States Volunteers, the Ninth Regiment of In- -20 fantry, Massachusetts National Guard, the One Hun- -21 dred and First Regiment of Infantry, United States 22 Army, and the One Hundred and First Regiment of 23 Infantry, Massachusetts National Guard; therefore, in 24 testimony of the people’s gratitude for their patriotism 25 and services rendered to state and nation; be it 26 Resolved, That for the purpose of providing a suitable 27 commemoration of Colonel Thomas Cass and the officers 28 and men of the Ninth Regiment of Infantry, Massachu- -29 setts Volunteers, a mural entitled “Colonel Thomas Cass 30 of the Ninth Regiment of Infantry, Massachusetts Vol- -31 unteers, receiving the State Colors from Governor John 32 A. Andrew, June the twenty-fifth, eighteen hundred and 33 sixty-one”, be placed in the large wall space north of 34 the main entrance to the office of the secretary of the 35 commonwealth, room three hundred and thirty-three, 36 and extending to room three hundred and thirty-four 37 on the third floor of the state house, with appropriate 38 reference to the perpetuation of the glorious traditions 39 of thatregiment by its valiant successors, and the equally 40 glorious traditions of its predecessor units. For this pur- -41 pose, such sum as may be appropriated therefor may be 42 expended by a commission to be designated as the 43 “Colonel Thomas Cass Mural Commission” to consist 44 of seven persons, namely, the Colonel Commanding the 45 One Hundred and First Regiment of Infantry, Massa- -46 chusetts National Guard; his immediate predecessor as 47 such Colonel Commanding; the chairman of the Cass 48 Memorial Committee; the Commander of the Ninth 49 Regiment Veterans’ Association, Massachusetts Volun- -50 teer Militia; the President of the Ninth Regiment of 51 Massachusetts Infantry, United States Volunteers, Vet- -52 erans’ Association; the Commander of the One Hundred 53 and First Infantry Veterans’ Association, a veteran of 54 World War 11, and a Past Commander of the said Asso- -55 ciation; a veteran of World War I, appointed by the 56 governor, which commission shall, together with the art 57 commission of the commonwealth, arrange therefor and 1955.] HOUSE— No. 1988. 3

58 who shall, subject to the approval of said art commission 59 select the aforesaid site or some other suitable site within 60 the state house, for such mural decoration; and be it 61 further 62 Resolved, 1hat chapter forty-five of the resolves of 63 nineteen hundred and forty-nine is hereby repealed.
