Revista Alicantina de Estudios Ingleses 12 (1999): 19-36 Postmodernist Narrative: In Search of an Altemative. Brian Crews Universidad de Sevilla ABSTRACT The development of the novel form is an exploration of the possibilities for realistic representation which is increasingly informed by an understanding that distortion and fabrication are inevitable consequences of the mediating process of narrative. The search for alternatives to conventional modes of representation as a way of defamiliarizing this state of affairs draws attention to the fact that the ordered human constructs that compose knowledge are fictitious systems that inevitably invade reality. A number of contemporary authors, through a variety of strategies emphasize the inevitable distortion involved in representation. The world is always transposed, reality is always framed in terms of the conventions we know and becomes an unfamiliar absence continually deferred by the fictitious construct we cali knowledge. Martin Amis, Angela Cárter and Ian McEwan are just a few of the authors who question existing realisms and posit alternatives but in the knowledge that reality is always other than what we make it. Postmodernism is really all about forms of representation and the ways in which we depict and come to terms with what we cali reality (no matter the médium involved); or even if we can talk about reality or truth at all. J.F. Lyotard suggests that all forms of representation rely upon narrative in order to validare themselves, and it could be said that all knowledge is primarily narrative as, no matter their médium, all artistic and cultural representations require some metanarrative to explain, validate or justify them (1984: 7). -

Plozza The troll under the bridge Independent scholar Shivaun Plozza The troll under the bridge: should Australian publishers of young adult literature act as moral-gatekeepers? Abstract: In the world of Young Adult Literature, the perceived impact of certain texts on the moral, social and psychological development of its readers is a cause for debate. The question ‘what is suitable content for a pre-adult readership’ is one guaranteed to produce conflicting, polarising and impassioned responses. Within the context of this debate, the essay explores a number of key questions. Do publishers have a moral obligation to avoid certain topics or should they be pushing the boundaries of teen fiction further? Is it the role of the publisher to consider the impact of books they publish to a teenage audience? Should the potential impact of a book on its reader be considered ahead of a book’s potential to sell and make money? This article analyses criticism and praise for two ‘controversial’ Australian Young Adult books: Sonya Hartnett’s Sleeping Dogs (1997) and John Marsden’s Dear Miffy (1997). It argues that ‘issues-books’ are necessary to the development of teens, and publishers should continue to push the envelope of teen fiction while ensuring they make a concerted effort to produce quality, sensitive and challenging books for a teen market. Biographical note: Shivaun Plozza is a project editor, manuscript assessor and writer of YA fiction. Her debut novel, Frankie, is due for publication by Penguin in early 2016. She has published short stories, poetry and articles in various journals, both online and print, and has won numerous awards and fellowships. -

ISSN: 1944-6934 © InternationalJournal.org Heroes of Humanity in Literature Tamar Mebuke, Tbilisi State Technical University, Georgia Abstract: Rebellious spirit of man, rejection of evil, and the imperfection of the world find their archetypal reflection in the image of Prometheus, fighter for the progress of man who dared to oppose God himself. The fire, obtained by him for man, is identified with reason itself. At the same time this image carries the duality of benefactor and criminal, since creation of something new and advanced leads to mutiny against reality itself and rejection of its laws. Nevertheless, through this myth Western civilization has been trying to understand itself in its cultural self-consciousness. Keywords: Prometheus, creators, the tragedy of culture. Myths represent basic, archetypal ideas of man. One of the “basic” thoughts of humanity, characteris- tic of any mythology, is the myth about demarcation of gods and people. It reveals the need for a compromise between arbitrariness of human will and reaction of the outer world. On the other hand, it is connected with the supposition of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe that the only question, standing behind the history of humanity is the question of God existence. Russian philosopher N. A. Berdyaev (1938) wrote: “For nearly half a millennium European Christian humanity has been having a trial with God. In the Christian world scepticism, agnosticism, disbelief, atheism are the symptoms of this process that takes the form of speculation over the problem of theodicy. But if there is a trial, then there must be the one with whom it is. -

Comparative Philosophy Volume 2, No. 2 (2011): 23-49 Open Access / ISSN 2151-6014 www.comparativephilosophy.org THE FUTURE OF HUMANITY: HEIDEGGER, PERSONHOOD AND TECHNOLOGY MAHON O‟BRIEN ABSTRACT: This paper argues that a number of entrenched posthumanist positions are seriously flawed as a result of their dependence on a technical interpretive approach that creates more problems than it solves. During the course of our discussion we consider in particular the question of personhood. After all, until we can determine what it means to be a person we cannot really discuss what it means to improve a person. What kinds of enhancements would even constitute improvements? This in turn leads to an examination of the technical model of analysis and the recurring tendency to approach notions like personhood using this technical model. In looking to sketch a Heideggerian account of personhood, we are reaffirming what we take to be a Platonic skepticism concerning technical models of inquiry when it comes to certain subjects. Finally we examine the question as to whether the posthumanist looks to apply technology‟s benefits in ways that we have reflectively determined to be useful or desirable or whether it is technology itself (or to speak as Heidegger would – the “essence” of technology) which prompts many posthumanists to rely on an excessively reductionist view of the human being. Dowd was terminally ill with cancer himself when she started the story and died before she could write it. [3] Ness and Kay won the Carnegie Medal and the Greenaway Medal in 2012, the year's best children's literature awards by the British Libraries (CILIP). A monster Calls is the only book both Medals won. [5] [6] [6] The novel was adapted in the 2016 movie of the same name. Origin Siobhan Dowd pregnant the novel while she had cancer. She discussed and contracted it to write it with editor Denise Johnstone-Burt at Walker Books, who also worked with Patrick Ness. After Dowd's death in August 2007, Walker arranged for Ness to write the story. Later, Walker and Ness arranged for Jim Kay to illustrate it, but Ness and Kay did not meet until after it was published in May 2011. -

The Politics of Estrangement: Tracking Shklovsky’s Device through Literary and Policing Practices Cristina Vatulescu Society of Fellows, Harvard Abstract Critics have frequently accused Russian Formalism of supporting an apo- litical separation of art from life. As a central Formalist term, estrangement (ostranenie) often bore the brunt of this accusation. Taking issue with this critique, this essay focuses on the entangled relationship betweentheaestheticsandpoliticsofestrange- ment and argues that an attentive look at the history of estrangement reveals its deep involvement with revolutionary and police state politics. This essay traces estrange- ment’s conflicted development through Victor Shklovsky’s oeuvre and beyond, in the work of Nicolae Steinhardt and Joseph Brodsky, and also in secret police interroga- tion and reeducation practices and in CIA manuals. In Sentimental Journey, Shklovsky wrote that during the civil war, life itself was made strange and became art. Shklovsky’s memoirs shed light on the effects of this revolu- tionary estrangement on the self. Furthermore, the memoirs reenacted this unsettling estrangement by incorporating elements of official Soviet genres, such as the trial deposition, the interrogation autobiography, and the letter to the government. Is he right to feel betrayed by Lily? 3. “Stories are wild creatures,” the monster says. “When you let them loose, who knows what havoc they might wreak?” What does the monster mean by this? In which ways does the rest of the novel prove the monster’s point? 4. Discuss the role that humour plays in this novel. Where are the best comic moments? 5. “Sometimes people need to lie to themselves most of all,” the monster tells Conor. In what sense is Conor lying to himself? Is his mother lying to herself? What does each of them need to believe? 6. “This is all sounding pretty fairy tale-ish,” Conor says to the monster. However, the monster’s stories deviate from the traditional fairy tale norm.
