  • Siemens Technology at the New Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
Siemens Technology at the new Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Lake Buena Vista, FL – Since 1937, Snow White and Seven Dwarfs have been entertaining audiences of all ages. As of May 28, 2014, the story found a new home within the largest expansion at the Magic Kingdom® Park. The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, along with a host of new attractions, shows and restaurants now call New Fantasyland home. The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, an exciting family coaster, features a forty-foot drop and a series of curves that send guests seated in mine cars swinging and swaying through the hills and caves of the enchanted forest. As part of the systems used to manage the operation of this new attraction, Walt Disney Imagineering chose Siemens to help automate many of the attraction‟s applications. Thanks to Siemens innovations, Sleepy, Doc, Grumpy, Bashful, Sneezy, Happy and Dopey entertain the guests while Siemens technologies are hard at work throughout the infrastructure of the attraction. This includes a host of Siemens‟ systems to ensure that the attraction runs safely and smoothly so that the mine cars are always a required distance from each other. Siemens equipment also delivers real-time information to the Cast Members operating the attraction for enhanced safety, efficiency and communication. The same Safety Controllers, SINAMICS safety variable frequency drives and Scalance Ethernet switches are also found throughout other areas of the new Fantasyland such as the new Dumbo the Flying Elephant®, and Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid attractions. And Siemens Fire and Safety technologies are found throughout Cinderella Castle.

  • Disney and His Worlds
DISNEY AND HIS WORLDS Disney and his Worlds is a thorough overview of what is by now quite a large literature on the Disney organization, in particular the theme parks and their significance for contemporary culture. The author looks at Walt Disney’s life and how his biography has been constructed; the Walt Disney Company in the years after his death; and the writings of various commentators on the Disney theme parks. He raises important issues about the parks: whether they are harbingers of postmodernism; the significance of consumption at the parks; the nature of the parks as tourism; and the representation of past and future. The discussion of theme parks is central but links with the presentation of Walt Disney’s biography and his organization by showing how central economic and business considerations have been in their development, and how the significance of these considerations is typically marginalized in order to place an emphasis on fantasy and magic. In the process, the book questions the assumption that the parks are sites of postmodern sensibility. Disney films, merchandizing and theme parks are one of the defining features of our times and one of the more effective elements in American cultural imperialism. It is impossible to imagine an encyclopedic sociology of contemporary culture that did not devote at least a chapter to Disney and his Worlds. In particular the parks are often employed as examples in areas like cultural studies, the sociology of postmodernism, tourism and leisure studies, while Walt Disney and his organization are important to the area of organization studies.

For more information, please contact [email protected]. FUTURE WORLD(S): A Critique of Disney's EPCOT and Creating a Futuristic Curriculum by ALAN BOWERS (Under the Direction of Daniel Chapman) ABSTRACT In my dissertation inquiry, I explore the need for utopian based curriculum which was inspired by Walt Disney’s EPCOT Center. Theoretically building upon such works regarding utopian visons (Bregman, 2017, e.g., Claeys 2011;) and Disney studies (Garlen and Sandlin, 2016; Fjellman, 1992), this work combines historiography and speculative essays as its methodologies. In addition, this project explores how schools must do the hard work of working toward building a better future (Chomsky and Foucault, 1971). Through tracing the evolution of EPCOT as an idea for a community that would “always be in the state of becoming” to EPCOT Center as an inspirational theme park, this work contends that those ideas contain possibilities for how to interject utopian thought in schooling.

  • Optimizing Greenhouse Tomato Production: Light and the Physiological Disorder Edema
OPTIMIZING GREENHOUSE TOMATO PRODUCTION: LIGHT AND THE PHYSIOLOGICAL DISORDER EDEMA A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science by Dylan Charles Kovach May 2020 © 2020 Dylan Charles Kovach ABSTRACT Greenhouse production of tomatoes through the use of sophisticated environmental controls and precision hydroponic growing techniques allows for significantly higher yields within a smaller footprint when compared to traditional field production. One of the challenges faced by year-round greenhouse tomato operators in the Northeast U.S. is the low availability of solar radiation during the winter months, which results is a heavy reliance on supplemental lighting to maintain the photosynthetic processes required for suitable yields. During preliminary experiments evaluating multiple daily light integral (DLI) and CO2 combinations with juvenile tomato plants grown in acrylic miniature growth chambers under cool white fluorescent lights, we began to notice the development of the physiological disorder edema on the lower, oldest leaves. Multiple studies have evaluated the effect of light quality on the development of edema in tomato, with many finding a correlation between increasing rates of edema in UV-deficient environments. Given the UV-filtering characteristics of acrylic and a lack of literature evaluating the interaction of multiple cultivars to edema, the objective of our study was to evaluate the development of edema in one rootstock cultivar, ‘Maxifort’, and four hybrid scion cultivars: ‘Sweetelle,’ ‘Trust,’ ‘Merlice,’ and ‘Torero.’ We began our experiment with 4-week-old tomato plants, with two of each cultivar being placed into four identical acrylic miniature chambers and a remaining eight of each being grown in a control walk-in chamber with no acrylic.

  • THRILL RIDE - the SCIENCE of FUN a SONY PICTURES CLASSICS Release Running Time: 40 Minutes
THRILL RIDE - THE SCIENCE OF FUN a SONY PICTURES CLASSICS release Running time: 40 minutes Synopsis Sony Pictures Classics release of THRILL RIDE-THE SCIENCE OF FUN is a white- knuckle adventure that takes full advantage of the power of large format films. Filmed in the 70mm, 15-perforation format developed by the IMAX Corporation, and projected on a screen more than six stories tall, the film puts every member of the audience in the front seat of some of the wildest rides ever created. The ultimate ride film, "THRILL RIDE" not only traces the history of rides, past and present but also details how the development of the motion simulator ride has become one of the most exciting innovations in recent film history. Directed by Ben Stassen and produced by Charlotte Huggins in conjunction with New Wave International, "THRILL RIDE" takes the audience on rides that some viewers would never dare to attempt, including trips on Big Shot at the Stratosphere, Las Vegas and the rollercoasters Kumba and Montu, located at Busch Gardens, Tampa, Florida. New Wave International was founded by Stassen, who is also a renowned expert in the field of computer graphics imagery (CGI). The film shows that the possibilities for thrill making are endless and only limited by the imagination or the capabilities of a computer workstation. "THRILL RIDE-THE SCIENCE OF FUN" shows how ride film animators use CGI by first "constructing" a wire frame or skeleton version of the ride on a computer screen. Higher resolution textures and colors are added to the environment along with lighting and other atmospheric effects to heighten the illusion of reality.

A few forms of commercial recreation have been dealt with in this thesis, concentrating on the development of amusement parks, from the first pic- nic parks built by the traction companies and others in order to increase the use of their particular means of transportation through the develop- ment of traditional amusement parks which we see today on the edges of met- ropolitan areas struggling against the forces of rising property prices and declining business, to the advent of Disneyland and the beginning of a new era in the history of amusement parks - the theme parks.
