Margules Outraged and Disappointed at Urango Comeback Reports Promoter Leon Margules of Warriors Boxing wishes to issue the following warnings to the fighter and those involved with former IBF junior welterweight world champion Juan “Iron Twin” Urango’s supposed comeback fight on April 26 at the Centro Bancomer in Mexico City, reportedly against Mexican veteran Cristian Chavez (23-18, 11 KOs). “Juan Urango is still under contract to me,” stated Margules. “He’s still under contract to Warriors boxing and does not have permission to do this fight and we intend to pursue our legal remedies and will seek redress against anyone who interferes with our contract.” Urango (22-3-1, 17 KOs) hasn’t fought since a March 2010 loss against Devon Alexander. “He fought Devon Alexander and after the fight, told me he was going to retire. I congratulated him on his retirement and told him if he ever decided to fight again, he still had a certain period of time left on his contract.” Margules says he’s shocked the fighter is even attempting this without contacting his promoter, who guided the Colombian slugger to multiple regional titles, two world titles and several high-profile fights. “I am outraged and disappointed. We took him to the world title twice. He earned way over a million dollars in the ring and had many big fights including Ricky Hatton, Devon Alexander, Randall Bailey, Andre Berto. How many boxers can say that? I don’t know who is talking to him or leading him to believe he no longer has an obligation to Warriors, but they should be aware: I have an exclusive promotional contract and whoever is putting him on is interfering.”.

Sunrise, FL — Fighting for Haiti was the name of the card and the name of the game tonight for WBC Welterweight Champion Andre Berto. Berto 26-0 (20KO) retains his WBC strap with an exciting KO win over Carlos Quintana 27-3(21). Berto was able to fight through an early fight torn bicep muscle to overpower the southpaw Quintana. Berto showed blazing speed right from the opening bell in round one however, was knocked down by the southpaw early, the clean shot was called a rabbit punch, and a knockdown was not credited. In round 2 Quintana caught Berto with a big straight left that stunned the champ and turned the boxing match into a slugfest. Round three found both fighters throwing mean shots and Berto catching Quintana with a clever left hook mid round and putting him on the ropes with a variety of body head shots. Quintana was deducted 1 point for hitting behind the head, which he did often. Berto answered the bell of the fourth round with fast sharp punches, but kept the southpaw in front of him creating a power punch fest. Berto’s pressure served up intense infighting that produced a barrage of heavy shots. The tempo was just as fierce in the 5th round with several exchanges as these two warriors battled for punching positioning by doing just that, punching. In the seventh Berto came out swinging hard and caught Quintana with some crisp shots all the while being the aggressor.

Alexander Is a Good Story Trying to Be Great
Alexander is a good story trying to be great Devon Alexander is the irresistible story that explains the battered game’s inexhaustible resiliency. As reports of the Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather talks continue to sound like a sequel to Seinfeld’s theme about nothing, along comes Alexander and the junior-welterweight division with a chance to talk about something real. I’m not sure what to make of Alexander, unbeaten (20-0, 13 KOs) and in possession of the World Boxing Council and International Boxing Federation titles. Not yet anyway. Don King, who loves references to ancient history and is old enough to be one, is calling him The Great. Maybe he is. Or will be. Standing in his way, however, are Tim Bradley, Amir Khan, Marcos Maidana and Victor Ortiz, just a few who will try to turn him into Alexander The Wannabe. In Alexander’s immediate path Saturday night in hometown St. Louis on HBO, there is Andriy Kotelnik (30-3-1, 13 KOs), an able Ukrainian who probably finds motivation in Russian Dmitry Pirog’s stoppage last Saturday that knocked-much hyped Danny Jacobs, The Golden Child, out of the ranks of middleweight contenders. Pirog’s stunner is a timely memo, reminding Alexander that a nickname only makes the target a lot bigger. If Alexander doesn’t get deluded and decked by historical allusions, headlines and assorted other feints, he can help recreate interest in a business that has been backed into a dark and dull corner by the Pacquiao-Mayweather talks to nowhere.
