The endeavours of IUCAA span different fronts, as outlined in the pages of this report. Here is a quick summary and highlights. IUCAA has an academic strength of 15 core faculty members (academic), 15 post-doctoral fellows and 18 research scholars. The core research programmes by these academics span a variety of areas in astronomy and astrophysics. These topics include quantum theory and gravity, classical gravity, gravitational waves, cosmology and structure formation, cosmic microwave background anisotropy, observational cosmology, magnetic fields in astrophysics, active galactic nuclei, quasar and intergalactic medium, galaxies high energy astrophysics, stars and interstellar medium and instrumentation. These research activities are summarised in pages 15-39. The publications of the IUCAA members, numbering to about 75 in the current year are listed in pages 67-70. IUCAA members also take part in pedagogical activities, the details of which are given in pages 77-78 of this report. The extended academic family of IUCAA consists of about 90 Visiting Associates, who have been active in several different fields of research. Pages 40-57 of this report highlights their research contributions spanning gravitational theory and gravitational waves, classical and quantum cosmology, galaxies and quasars, compact objects and X-ray binaries, stars, stellar systems and interstellar medium, Sun and solar system, plasma physics, dynamics, theoretical physics, e-content development, instrumentation and radio astrophysics. The resulting publications, numbering to about 95 are listed in pages 71-76 of this report. A total of about 1216 person-days were spent by Visiting Associates at IUCAA during this year. In addition, IUCAA was acting as host to about 400 visitors through the year. IUCAA conducts its graduate school jointly with the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics, Pune. Among the research scholars, three students have successfully defended their theses and obtained Ph.D. degrees from the University of Pune during the year. Summary of their theses appears in pages 58-66. Apart from these activities, IUCAA conducts several workshops, schools, and conferences each year, both at IUCAA and at different university/college campuses. During this year, there were 7 such events in IUCAA and 6 were held at other universities/colleges under IUCAA sponsorship. Another main component of IUCAA’s activities is its programme for Science Popularisation. On the National Science Day, several special events were organised. There were posters displayed by the academic members of IUCAA, which elaborated on the research work at IUCAA and topics in the field of astronomy. There were public lectures given by the faculty members and programmes for school students consisting of quiz, essay and drawing competitions. During the Open Day, more than 3000 people visited IUCAA. These activities were ably supported by the scientific and technical, and administrative staff (20 and 33 in number respectively) who should get the lion’s share of the credit for successful running of the programmes of the centre. The scientific staff also looks after the major facilities like library, computer centre, and instrumentation lab. A brief update on these facilities is given on pages 101-106 of this report. A major milestone which we reached during the year is the successful completion of IUCAA Girawali Observatory and the installation of the Telescope. The final acceptance was done in early February and the Telescope was handed over to IUCAA on February 14, 2006. IUCAA scientists are actively involved in the task of making the Telescope ready for observations as soon as possible. T.   • Professor Helen Quinn
    Professor Helen Quinn Helen Quinn was born in Australia and grew up in the Melbourne suburbs of Blackburn and Mitcham. She attended Tintern Girls Grammar School in Ringwood East. She matriculated successfully and obtained a cadetship from the Australian Department of Meteorology to fund her studies at the University of Melbourne. After beginning her undergraduate studies at the University, her family migrated to San Francisco in the early 1960s. Professor Quinn finished her undergraduate, and eventually graduate education at Stanford University. After receiving her doctorate from Stanford in 1967, she held a postdoctoral position at Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron in Hamburg, Germany, then served as a research fellow at Harvard in 1971, joining the faculty there in 1972. She returned to Stanford in 1976 as a visitor on a Sloan Fellowship and joined the staff at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Centre (SLAC) in 1977. In her current position as a theoretical physicist at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), Professor Quinn has made important contributions towards unifying the strong, weak and electromagnetic interactions into a single coherent model of particle physics. In 2000 she was awarded the Dirac Medal and Prize for pioneering contributions to the quest for a unified theory of quarks and leptons and of the strong, weak, and electromagnetic interactions. The award, shared with Professors Howard Georgi of Harvard and Jogesh Pati of the University of Maryland, recognized Professor Quinn for her work on the unification of the three interactions, and for fundamental insights about charge-parity conservation. She has also recently developed basic analysis methods used to search for the origin of particle-antiparticle asymmetry in nature.

    Large-Scale Structure under Λ-CDM Paradigm Timothy Faerber Astrophysical Tests of Physical Theories - May 2020 1 Introduction We live in a universe dominated by matter and energy. On the smallest scale, all matter and energy is composed of \elementary particles", as predicted by the standard model of particle physics, seen in Figure 1. Figure 1: The Standard Model of Particle Physics All of these particles interact or are influenced via one of the four funda- mental forces of nature: the electromagnetic force (responsible for every- day forces, i.e. friction and tension), the nuclear weak force (responsible 1 for beta decay), the nuclear strong force (responsible for binding of neu- trons and electrons to form more atoms), and the gravitational force (responsible for the gravitational attraction between two massive bod- ies) [4]. In this paper we will focus on the gravitational force and the effect that it has on carving out the Large-Scale Structure (LSS) that we see when observing our universe on the scale of superclusters of galaxies (≈ 110 − 130h−1Mpc) [5]. The LSS in our universe is composed of many gravitationally-bound smaller-scale structures such as groups of galax- ies (less than ≈ 30 − 50 giant galaxies, individual galaxies, gas clouds, stars and planets. On scales the size of superclusters, gravity dominates the other three fundamental forces, however without them, small-scale structures could not exist to form the LSS observed. Responsible for holding together every atom in the universe, and thus making it possi- ble for matter to exist as we know it, is the electromagnetic force.

Jagadesh Kumar Vice Chancellor Jawaharlal Nehru University New Delhi-110 067, India Dear Prof. Kumar, We are writing, as a group of academics, to express our deep disappointment with your actions in the event leading up to the arrest of several students last week. We understand that last Tuesday, a student group organized a rally to commemorate the death anniversary of Afzal Guru. The police alleges that some of the students voiced controversial opinions. The police then proceeded to arrest the president of the JNU Students Union, Kanhaiya Kumar, and charged him with sedition. This has been followed by a number of further arrests. What is most disturbing is that the JNU administration appears to have defended and aided these repressive actions by the police, rather than defending the students who were involved in a non-violent activity. The arrest of the president of the JNUSU is especially troublesome since he was not even an organizer of the rally but merely present to express his solidarity. However, even as far the organizers and the speakers at the event are concerned, we hope that you recognize that expressing controversial views in a peaceful forum cannot be equated with sedition. For example, many people believe that Afzal Guru was let down by a lack of appropriate legal representation in his trial, and that his execution was therefore a grave miscarriage of justice. One may agree or disagree with this viewpoint — and, indeed, signatories to this letter hold different positions — but we are unanimous that students should have the right to freely discuss this issue.

Raman with the main objective of promoting the progress and upholding the cause of science (both pure and applied). It was registered as a Society under the Societies Registration Act on 24 April 1934. The Academy commenced functioning with 65 Fellows and the formal inauguration took place on 31 July 1934 at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. On the afternoon of that day its first general meeting of Fellows was held where Sir C.V. Raman was elected its President and the draft constitution of the Academy was approved and adopted. The first issue of the Academy Proceedings was published in July 1934. The present report covering the period from April 2007 to March 2008 represents the seventy-fourth year of the Academy.
