Thank you for your request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the Act) received on 25 January 2011, seeking the following information:

‘How much does the BBC spend on recruitment advertising in the press, please?

Why does it spend anything when it has its own recruitment web area?’

The unique reference number for your request is RFI20110092, and I now respond as follows;

We have interpreted the request as relating to external recruitment advertising sources that the BBC has used across jobs related websites, nation press job sections and local press jobs sections.

In response to part 1 of your request, the attached 3 documents provide a breakdown of recruitment advertising spend by the BBC for each of the 3 calendar years 2007, 2008 and 2009.

The data includes recruitment advertising spend by Capita on behalf of the BBC and recruitment advertising spend by the BBC directly with our recruitment advertising agency, Bernard Hodes.

The BBC chooses the most suitable recruitment advertising media on a vacancy-by-vacancy basis to ensure that the most appropriate media source is used to attract the best candidates for the role. This is usually based on a discussion between the line manager and the recruitment consultant, managed by our outsourced recruitment partner Capita, who manage recruitment advertising spend on behalf of the BBC. As can be seen from the attached breakdown, this includes national press, local press, trade press and a wide range of job boards. Please note that in a similar trend as other organisations, over the period 2007 to 2009, the BBC recruitment spend has moved from traditional press to more online-based job boards.

In response to part 2 of your request, the BBC's main recruitment channel is our jobs website (bbc.co.uk/jobs). In order to attract the widest range of candidates we sometimes use a range of recruitment advertising in the press, online and at career events to raise awareness of specific vacancies that are traditionally harder to recruit for. Our direct recruitment advertising drives candidates to the jobs website where they apply for the vacancy.
