After wrapping up his PETUNIA most recent tour, during which he had road-tested several new songs, he anticipated an easy time in the INTERNATIONAL studio capturing these tunes for posterity. Lyon Cohen, Leonard’s paternal grandfather, a well- known businessman and philanthropist, was an important figure in the Jewish community. He started the Freedman Company, one of the largest clothing manufacturers in Montreal, and cofounded the Canadian Jewish Times (1897), the first English- language Jewish newspaper in Canada. Lyon Cohen was also president of several organizations, including the Canadian Jewish Congress and Congregation Shaar Hashomayim. He helped Jewish immigrants from the Russian Empire settle in Canada—among them, from Lithuania, the learned Rabbi Solomon Klinitsky- Klein and his family. Lyon’s son, Nathan Cohen, a lieutenant in the Canadian army and World War I veteran, later ran the family business. From his father, the young Leonard inherited a love of suits; from his mother, Masha, who trained as a nurse, he received his charisma and his love of songs. Cohen’s well- to- do family was quite different from the Jewish masses who arrived in Montreal in the early twentieth century. Many of these immigrants spoke Yiddish as their native language and worked in garment factories. Despite his extensive travels and his residence in Los Angeles, Cohen always returned to Montreal to “renew his neurotic affiliations,” as he often repeated in interviews. -

Leonard Cohen: Agency of Yes by Harvey Kubernik © 2017
Leonard Cohen: Agency of Yes By Harvey Kubernik © 2017 Canadian songwriter and poet/novelist Leonard Cohen waived a physical goodbye at age 82 on November 7, 2016, just after the release of his 14 th album, the uncompromising and urgent You Want It Darker. In December 2016 I was invited to guest deejay on Los Angeles radio station The Sound 100.3 FM Classic Rock KWSD My Turn program. KWSD is Southern California’s classic rock station with over 1.3 million listeners. The broadcast aired in January 2017. The studio overlooked the street in the mid-Wilshire district area where Leonard lived in a duplex. I dedicated “Hallelujah” to him. It was my audio service of sitting shiva for Leonard. November 7 th will be the one year yahrzeit of his death. My 2014 critically acclaimed book on him, Everybody Knows is now published in America, England, Russia, France, Germany, China and two different editions in Canada. It’s recently been published in paperback edition by Omnibus Press in the U.K. I’ve also been cited and quoted, and my archives utilized in three earlier books on Cohen by authors Ira Nadel, Anthony Reynolds and Sylvie Simmons. I recorded with Leonard in 1976 and ’77 (handclaps and percussion) on his Phil Spector-produced Death of a Ladies Man album . Long before the current century Leonard Cohen retail and media renaissance, an interview I conducted with Leonard in 1975 for Melody Maker is now published again in the spring 2017 first collection of essays on Cohen in the U.K. -
Son of Canadian Icon Brings His Father's Artwork to Town for Rare Exhibition and Sale of Leonard Cohen Artwork
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 10, 2008 SON OF CANADIAN ICON BRINGS HIS FATHER’S ARTWORK TO TOWN FOR RARE EXHIBITION AND SALE OF LEONARD COHEN ARTWORK VANCOUVER – Adam Cohen, the son of legendary Canadian singer, writer and artist Leonard Cohen will be in Vancouver December 3rd for an exclusive showing of his father’s work – the first time Cohen’s artwork has ever been shown on the West Coast. A renowned musician in his own right, Adam Cohen will launch the exhibition and sale of the 37 pieces that make up “Leonard Cohen: Artworks,” which runs until Dec. 31. The Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter says the collection of his father’s Jean Cocteau-like sketches, featuring multiple self-portraits, as well as images of Leonard Cohen’s homes in Montreal and on the Greek island of Hydra, “are all little fragments of Cohen family history.” Cohen spent countless hours drawing, both for himself and with his children – Adam and his sister, Lorca – purely as creative exploration. “I always just loved trying to find the shape of things,” Leonard Cohen has said. “I never thought of them as something to exhibit. I always thought of them as kind of notes – a kind of personal journalism.” “These drawings are not his effort to be remembered in the annals of history as a visual artist,” says Adam Cohen. “ But that distinct voice of his, which many of us know and love already, is evident here in his graphic work.” Cohen, who says his father has been “nothing but a positive influence,” is currently working on two musical projects that pay homage to his family roots, having recently become a father himself.
