Words of Welcome to our Dutch Partners
Dear students, on behalf of our headmaster Mr. Rink we wish to welcome you to Grashof Gymnasium in Essen. We hope your stay will be enjoyable with your German hosts. Students, parents and teachers alike are proud to welcome our Dutch guests from Pius X-College.
Essen is located in the Ruhr Area which used to be the industrial heartland in Germany. It is now eight years ago that we proudly called Essen the Cultural Capital of Europe. Our city is a very busy one (580,000 inhabitants) undergoing restructuring since the end of heavy industry which many associate with our region. Last year Essen was European Green Capital which reflects the effort to reinvent itself. Essen is a city of contrasts as you will find out in the next four days. The heavy industry was not located in the well-to-do and green south of Essen (where our school is) but in the city centre about four kilometres from here. There is no city in Germany where the divide between rich and poor is as big as here, even though you may not notice. All but two mines in the Ruhr Area are closed now and you’ll see how green our part of town is. You're going to see how scenic and picturesque the area is in contrast to the densely populated parts of Essen further north. We believe the Ruhr Area to be a very interesting topic. Zeche Zollverein is the landmark which we will visit on Thursday. One of the students' favourite places is definitely the Seaside Beach Club where we will be having our traditional barbecue on Thursday evening.
We expect you have been looking forward to this exchange given the successful experience back in January. It goes without saying that you are required to speak English as much as possible because another objective

of the exchange is to use this language both in a learning environment and outside school.
Having seen how well Dutch and German students got along, we’d love to see you taking an active interest in each other once again. We also expect our German students to take care of our Dutch friends at all times.
As always we have tried to make the workshops as interesting and varied as possible.
However, you are also invited to look around and see how things are done here. The teachers /workshop leaders are here to assist you if you have any questions or problems. Teachers and students alike are happy to help you.
We believe that taking part in the exchange is a privilege. This is why we expect the exchange to be successful.

Tuesday, 15th May 2018:
10.30 - arrival of Dutch students at Grashof Gymnasium
10.30-11.00 - take luggage to P01 - buffet/drinks
11.00-11.30 - welcome and briefing of the group/film: 1950s Essen circa 11.45 - walk to Villa Hügel (2km from school)
12.30-2pm - two Dutch guided tours (split into two groups) 60 minutes
1pm-2pm - tour of the German group
2.00-2.30pm - return to school - free afternoon

One of the goals of your stay in Essen is to make you familiar with the recent past of this city and to give students a general overview of the industrial development of the Ruhr Area and its structural change now that the times of the heavy industry are long over. I have a real gem for us. The New York Board of Education made a film of Essen after WWII. Having watched the film, you are going to talk about your observations and compare them to your impressions later today. Therefore I'd like to ask you to take photographs and see what our part of Essen is like. Among other things I'd like you to find out about living and working conditions in the past, about mass migration to Germany after the war and some other structural changes in the Ruhr Area in the recent past. You are going to work with your partner while the teachers are happy to assist you if need be.

Villa Hügel - a "house" for the Krupps, today a museum
We are going to walk to Villa Hügel which is a fine opportunity to show you the surrounding area. The walk is takes about 35 minutes and will allow you to walk the ground and enjoy the beautiful view of the Ruhr valley and the south of hilly and green Essen.
Luckily I have been able to organise tours for us at Villa Hügel. That is the only time that the two schools are separate which means that the tours in
Dutch will start at 12.30pm while the German group will follow at 1pm.
The Krupps were a family of extremely successful enterpreneurs and very rich people who manufactured wheels for locomotives, weapons - not just for the German army - and also ships in their long history since the early
1800s.

On your way to the Villa Hügel as well as in the afternoon, take photos of the area and places you visit in the afternoon with your partners. We’ll need your pictures for the workshops on Wednesday.
After the tours and the quiz we will meet outside the main building, take a photograph of the group and head back for the school. Once you have picked up your luggage, you are free to spend the rest of the afternoon indepedently, but don't forget the photos for the day after. That means you and your Dutch hosts shall remain together at all times which does not mean you can't meet the other students.

Workshops: Biology and history of Essen (8.30am-1.30pm)

As lessons have started already be quiet on your way to your classroom on the second floor.
In his biology workshop Mr. Zill is going to examine the flora and fauna near our school. You will have to find out what kind of plants and insects/animals live in the near-by wood and creek. If you have got wellington boots (maybe your father’s or mother’s), bring them as you might step into the creek to look for plants and insects. Waterproof shoes might also be useful.
In Mr. Schäfer’s and my history workshop we are going to make you familiar with the rise of Essen during the Industrial Revolution in the early 19th century. We will mainly focus on changes in the lives of ordinary people and how the industrial change shaped their lives, i.e. working and living conditions. Only then you will realize the dramatic changes taking place in the period between the 1830s and the 1960s. When contrasted to the film the New York Board of Education made after World War II you will again learn about the transformation of Essen when the coal and steel industry gradually declined after WWII in Ms. Florian's class.
You will be free between 1.30pm and 4.30pm when we meet at Schillerwiese. There we are going to play football, badminton, you might go for a run or exercise on a trail next to the football pitch. Students who love running can do so as well either on Schillerwiese or in the wood adjacent to it. You may want to bring a bottle of water to quench your thirst. I have got bibs for the football teams. Since they are orange, it is obvious what team is going to wear them.
IN THE AFTERNOON: SPORTS (4.30PM-6.00PM) You are going to have a break now before all of us meet again at Schillerwiese at 4.30pm. Do not forget to bring your sports gear (as well as your bats, badminton rackets, frisbees etc.). Schillerwiese is in Eichenstraße close to the roundabout in Stadtwald.

Visit to Zeche Zollverein and RuhrMuseum (finishing at 2pm)
Excursion to Word Heritage Site Zeche Zollverein on Thursday - The royal Dutch family on their visit to Zeche Zollverein in 2011 - King Willem-Alexander was crowned in 2013.
In the morning
We are going to meet at the tram stop Frankenstraße at 9.05am. Leave some space for pedestrians to pass our large group! Make sure you have got valid tickets (Zone A, Kinder, Vierfahrtenausweis) BEFORE coming to the stop in the morning, I suggest you buy the tickets before the Dutch group arrives on May 15. We will take the 9.15am 108 train to Zeche Zollverein via Essen main station (Hbf) where we willl need to change trams. The 107 tram will take you to Zollverein where we need to get off. All of us will change for the 107 leaving the main station at 9.27 arriving at Zeche Zollverein at 9.42am. The journey takes 25 minutes, from the stop it is a short walk to the former coking plant. We'll take a group photo first and afterwards you'll have a few minutes on your own before the

tours start at 10.15am. The museum opens at 10am; unfortunately they won't let us in before that. Leave your coats and rucksacks in the cloak room near the toilets (downstairs). The tours in English at Zeche Zollverein last about 90 minutes. Since there are no toilet breaks planned during the tour use them before. If someone needs the toilet during the tour, the guide will have to take you there leaving the rest inside the museum.
After the tours you will have a lunch break lasting about 30 minutes before we go to the RuhrMuseum which we'll explore on a self-guided basis at 12.15. We will leave the RuhrMuseum at about 2pm. There is a small restaurant inside the coking plant and another one outside (best when sunny) but some of you might want to bring your own sandwiches and drinks. In preparation for the visit you'll need to download an application called Quizlet as well download the quiz made for the visit. While exploring the museum with your partner you will be able to answer the questions offline. You'll be free for the rest of the day, well, that is until we meet at the Seaside Beach for the barbecue. Maybe your chance to pay a visit to the local mall, or, more interestingly, visit the beautiful cathedral (Dom) and the cloister not too far from the main station on your way back home.
Note that the official programme ends at Zollverein once we debriefed you and said goodbye at around 2pm. Tell your Dutch partner what your plans for the afternoon are in the afternoon before going to the Seaside Beach.
Make sure you have a valid ticket for the journey to the museum and back before we leave. Please do not wait to buy a ticket just before leaving unless you arrive at the stop in time. For more information about public transport in Essen go to: VRR: http://www.vrr.de/de/index.html

In the early evening - Seaside Beach
Barbecue: 5.30 until 8pm. Bring your own meat/food/plates, cups and crockery. Sausages, however, are provided for everyone. We aren't going to be able to bring our own drinks as we need to buy them there. Please note that if you come earlier, you'll have to pay for the admission. So wait for the teachers as we are going to cover the admission as well as the drinks. We meet at the entrance at 5.30 pm. If the weather is sunny or dry, you can do a lot of hanging around or sports, too. So bring a football, frisbee or anything to make this visit an enjoyable one. The barbecue officially ends at 8pm by which time will I need everyone to help us clean up the place. If you like, you can stay at the Seaside Beach longer but talk to your host family so they know when to pick you up.
Friday, 18th May 2018 -
Scenic walk through the green south of Essen. Today we will take a walk from Essen-Schuir to Essen-Werden which is not too demanding but be ready to climb some minor hills in the beautiful south of Essen. In Werden you will have some time on your own and a chance to buy an ice cream at one of the parlours in this medieval part of town. One of the striking features are the half-timbered houses still inhabited by locals in the historic old town of Werden. On our way back to school we will take the 169 bus from Werden to Bredeney where our school is. Bring a bottle of water and a sandwich so you can take a bite before we will be having our lunch break at school. Either before or after your lunch break we will ask you for a written feedback on the exchange.

In particular the German students might want to bring their lunch snack from home if they haven't ordered a pizza or a different dish before.
Lunch or other snacks will be waiting for the Dutch students at 12.30 in the school cafeteria and for those German students who have also ordered the pizza.
You can leave your luggage in the pavilion in room 1 before you set off for Essen-Schuir in the morning. A teacher will be waiting for you between 8.00-8.15am. Be on time!
If your host family or friends can bring your luggage to the school in the afternoon just before departure (2.30pm), that's fine as well.

Meine Kollegen und ich informieren Sie in dieser Mitteilung über den Ablauf des Gegenbesuchs im Rahmen unseres Austausches. Zusätzlich weisen wir auf einige organisatorische Dinge hin, die Ihnen eine Hilfe sein sollen bzw. bei denen wir Ihre Hilfe benötigen. Falls Sie Fragen oder Anregungen haben, bitten wir Sie uns zu kontaktieren (siehe unten).
Wir hoffen, dass Sie und Ihre Kinder sich auf den Besuch aus den Niederlanden freuen. Wir wünschen uns auch, dass die Schüler den Austausch auch in diesem Jahr als Gewinn betrachten. Die niederländischen Schüler kommen am 15.5.2017 gegen 10h30 an der Schule an und verlassen Essen am 18.5.2017 gegen 14.30h (Treffpunkt Ankunft/Rückfahrt: Grashof Gymnasium). Da alle Schüler am Donnerstag zur Zeche Zollverein und zum Seaside Beach sowie vielleicht am Freitagmorgen nach Bochum (insbesondere, die aus den Niederlanden) Tickets für den ÖPNV (am günstigsten Viererticket, Tarif A, Preis €5,90, Stand: 2017) Wichtig: Die Tickets vor der Fahrt kaufen, nicht bei Fahrtbeginn! Nachmittagsgestaltung / Freizeit: Der Nachmittag am Dienstag (ab etwa 14h) kann nach dem offiziellen Programm von den Schülern/Familien zur individuellen Gestaltung genutzt werden. Am Mittwochnachmittag (16.30- 18h) treffen wir uns alle zu Spiel und Sport auf der Schillerwiese in Essen-Stadtwald (Eichenstraße). Am Donnerstagabend ab 17.30h wird ein BBQ organisiert, wozu wir auch die Eltern ganz herzlich einladen. Treffen ist im Seaside Beach am Baldeneysee. Bitte denken Sie daran, dass jeder für seinen Partner und sich eigenes Besteck, Teller und Gläser (Becher) mitbringt. Von dem eingesammelten Geld kaufe ich Würstchen, gerne auf Anfrage auch ein paar Veggie-Würstchen oder Rindswürstchen (bitte vorab eine Rückmeldung an mich). Beiträge zum Buffet in Form von Brot, Salaten etc. werden in den Klassenpflegschaften bzw. Klassen organisiert. Diesbezüglich habe ich mich mit Frau Schimmele und Frau Hanson-Fendel ausgetauscht. Wir sind auf mindestens 2 Helfer am Grill angewiesen, die gerne die Kohle (4 Säcke und Grillzangen) mitbringen können.

Getränke werden vor Ort angeboten, wir dürfen keine eigenen Getränke mitbringen. Den Eintritt für die Schüler bezahle ich von dem eingezahlten Geldern genauso wie die Miete für den Grillplatz, daher treffen wir uns pünktlich um 17.30 am Eingang und gehen gemeinsam rein. Eltern müssen den Eintritt selber bezahlen. Planen Sie mit Ihren Kindern und den Gastschülern das Mittagessen bzw. Lunchpakete an den Tagen mit Ausflügen und Workshops. Am Freitag haben wir für die Gäste aus Bladel in der Cafeteria einen warmen Snack bestellt. Für die Schüler vom Grashof gibt es die Möglichkeit, ebenfalls diesen Snack zum Preis von 3€ zu bestellen. Ich nehme die Bestellungen und Bezahlung bis zum 11.5.2017 entgegen (Geld mit Namen in einem Umschlag). Die Schüler werden verschiedenen Workshops von uns zugeordnet werden, ein eingenmächtiges Wechseln ist nicht möglich. Es versteht sich von selbst, dass während des gesamten Austausches Rauch- und Alkoholverbot besteht. Die Eintrittsgelder für die gebuchten Führungen und Besuche begleichen wir von den eingezahlten Geldern, wobei wir ein kleines Defizit haben. Besprechen Sie frühzeitig, wie das Gepäck jeweils von und zur Schule transportiert werden kann. Es gibt sicherlich Familien, die die Koffer mitnehmen können. Wir bieten an, dass die Schüler Freitagmorgen zwischen 8h und 8h15h die Koffer in Raum P01 (Pavillon) deponieren können. Ein Lehrer wird diesen Raum aufschließen, ich selber werde direkt zum Treffpunkt für die Wanderung in Schuir. Andernfalls müssen die Koffer nachmittags zur Schule gebracht werden (Abfahrt 14:30h). Wenn es Ihnen möglich ist, können Sie das Gepäck am Ankunftstag gegen 10h30 von der Schule abholen. Ansonsten können die Schüler

ihr Gepäck in P01 deponieren und nach dem Besuch der Villa Hügel gegen 14h30 dort wieder abholen.
