Reading Buddies Program

This term, Year 9 are demonstrating leadership by joining with Year 4, 5 and 6 once a fortnight to pilot our Reading Buddies Program. The students read and discuss various texts developing literacy skills in a supportive environ- ment.

Benefits for our 'Little Buddies' include:

 hearing stories read-aloud (modelling of reading fluency, phrasing and expression)  having conversations with an older student about topics that interest and involve them (extending their vocabulary, oral language abilities)  having regular opportunities to practice familiar reading with assistance  enjoying fun, positive experiences with ‘big kids’ who are now a recognisable face in the school community

The ‘Big Buddies’ benefit from:

 further developing their own literacy skills  fostering leadership and problem-solving skills, improved self-confidence that comes from being looked-up to

 a very real and important reason to be responsible, and an opportunity to be ‘caught’ (and praised) for positive behaviour  bragging rights!

Reading Buddies programs promote a higher interest and engagement in reading, improvement in social and communication skills. Most importantly, it’s just FUN!

RAP LAWN BOWLS DEFEATED IN REGIONAL FINAL ON THURSDAY 11th MAY

The RAP Lawn Bowls team was defeated by ’s Billabong High School last Thursday at the local Ardlethan Bowling Club.

Billabong HS jumped out to a 7 nil lead after 2 ends and despite the RAP team scoring 5 on the third end Billabong were never headed to eventually win 26 to 11.

Jayden Woodward performed well as the lead against an very steady Billabong lead. Thomas Madden tried hard in his role as second but was outclassed by his older Billabong opponent. Loclan Nau, as skip, got the team out of trouble on several ends when Billabong held a large number of shots, mostly restricting their scoring to 1 or 2 shots. The Billabong skip plays pennants for the Culcairn Bowling Club and is a very accomplished bowler.

The Billabong HS team go to the NSW CHS finals at the Warilla Bowling Club on the NSW South Coast in June. We wish them all the best in their games.

Well done to Thomas Madden from Ariah Park Central School, Jayden Woodward and Loclan Nau from from Ardlethan Central School on their efforts to reach the Riverina Regional Final but also on doing their best and being good sports, in all four games, to each opposing school team member.

Thank you to the boys parents for supporting their children in participating NSW CHS sport, particularly Thomas’ mother who drove him to three of the games.

Thanks to The Ardlethan Bowling Club for their support and cooperation in hosting the last two games. A special thanks to Smiley Smith for his excellent preparation of the greens, and to the bowling club members who came along to support the boys.

Mr Gordon

Inspiring Performance by 7/8 Debaters

On Tuesday our Year 7/8 debating team travelled to Harden/Murrumburrah to participate in their first round debate for 2017, against Murrumburrah High School.

The team consisting of Mae Lucas, Alice Doyle, Jack and Jo Bray received the topic, ‘That all teachers should have to spend at least one year teaching in the country’ and chose the negative argument.

The younger students, under the tutelage of Mae, delivered their arguments in a mature manner and then Mae delivered the final argument.

All the students were a credit to our school with their performance and the manner in which they conducted themselves. I would like to thank Mae for her support and coaching of the younger students and Jack, Alice and Jo for putting their hands up to undertake their first ever debate in a team one age group above their own. It was truly inspiring.

We wish them well in their future debates.
