Locations SOAR has two Outdoor Education Centers – one located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Balsam, North Carolina, and the other in the majestic Wind River Mountains just outside of Dubois, Wyoming. In addition, we also offer programs in the Florida Keys, the Los Angeles area, Northern California, Northeast and in Belize.

The Balsam Base is a modern facility designed with a rustic charm. The Lodge is the center of activity at Base. It houses the kitchen, business office, equipment room, recreation room, group meeting space and dining area. A bathhouse complex is adjacent to the Lodge with private bath and shower facilities, a group meeting room, and a twenty-four foot climbing wall. In close proximity to the Lodge are the low and high ropes course, activity field, and Adirondack-style shelters scattered throughout the woodlands of the base. These shelters serve as the student and staff living quarters while they are on base. When out in the field, students will sleep in tents at various campsite accommodations. 2 012 Adventure Opportunities

Eagle View Ranch is located four miles west of Dubois, Wyoming. The dining pavilion and riding arena are centers of activity at Eagle View. The dining pavilion is constructed of lodgepole pine and houses the kitchen, bath and shower facilities and covered dining area with fireplace. The Riding Arena not only has an unforgettable view of the surrounding mountain ranges, but also provides a wonderful venue for students to work on equestrian skills. The Eagle View Lodge sits on the lower property and houses the administrative office and classrooms. A second kitchen complex is adjacent to the Lodge as are the horse corrals and tack buildings. Several outfitter-style shelters and two tipis are scattered throughout the Douglas firs of the ranch and serve as student and staff living quarters while they are on base. There is also a 6-hole Frisbee golf course, in addition to the hatchet throwing range and the archery range.

Success Oriented Achievement Realized features success- oriented, high adventure programs for preteens, teens and adults with Learning Disabilities (LD) and Attention Deficit/ Hyperactive Disorder (AD/HD). Emphasis is placed on developing self-confidence, social skills, problem-solving techniques, a willingness to attempt new challenges and the motivation which comes through successful goal orientation.

SOAR’s nationally recognized program has successfully challenged young people since 1975. Operating out of Balsam, North Carolina and Dubois, Wyoming, the SOAR staff lead expeditions throughout the Southeast, Northeast, Florida Keys, Central America, Rockies, Desert Southwest, and California. The out-of-doors provides an ideal classroom where relevant learning can occur and life skills can be taught. Adventure activities include: wilderness backpacking, horsepacking, llama trekking, rock climbing, caving, mountain biking, whitewater rafting, wildlife studies, fishing, SCUBA diving, snorkeling and sea . Summer expeditions range from two to four weeks in length and can be linked together for a longer experience. The Academy at SOAR offers academic credit opportunities through semester-length courses available during spring and fall. A parent weekend adventure is offered in the Spring.

Participants include young men and women, between the ages of eight and twenty-five, who are of average or above average intelligence and physical aptitude. Such an individual may have been identified as having a specific learning deficit or diagnosed with AD/HD and may be characterized as an underachiever in the traditional academic setting. The only ability required of participants is that they be able to enjoy the beautiful out-of-doors and be willing to challenge themselves. Youth who are diagnosed with emotional or behavioral handicaps or are demonstrating significant behavioral problems are discouraged from applying.

Experiential learning activities allow each student many opportunities to discover and develop his or her own learning abilities. The result is an individual who is cognizant of personal strengths and more willing to confront areas of challenge. Each student comes to view life as a series of challenges and opportunities, rather than a series of problems, just as the students come to view themselves as problem-solvers, rather than only part of the “problem.”

“We had such a great experience with SOAR. Eli stepped off the plane more confident than ever. Last week when he faced a tough situation, I encouraged him to think of rock climbing, his eyes lit up and his face immediately relaxed.” JM

www.soarnc.org 2 Experience the Challenge!

“I really appreciate you having camps geared towards ADHD kids. My son has so many special talents that are never appreciated when he is expected to sit quietly in a classroom seven hours a day. I think it is wonderful that the environment there was structured to his needs.” AH

Instructors are selected for those qualities of maturity, sensitivity and caring which enable them to relate well to young people and enhance the adventure program. SOAR staff are trained in such fields as special and secondary education, recreation therapy, counseling, outdoor and experiential education. All SOAR instructors have first aid and CPR certifications. Many staff members also have advanced medical credentials, such as Wilderness First Responder and Wilderness EMT certifications.

Student Interests and Groupings In recognizing the uniqueness of each human being and the variety of interests each student brings to SOAR, we offer a rich range of adventure programs. Activities and course sites range from snorkeling and kayaking in the Florida Keys; backpacking and whitewater rafting in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina; surfing and sea kayaking along the California coast; and horsepacking and fishing in the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming. This incredible array of activities and sites gives SOAR students many options from which to choose and allows them to match their interests with specific courses. We encourage parents to involve their child in the selection process as this increases their level of investment in and enthusiasm for the program.

Four factors are considered when grouping students within a program: age, maturity, experience and personal characteristics. Students are placed in groups with aged peers, recognizing that maturity and experience level can influence this placement. SOAR reserves the right to accept students into programs outside of the advertised age ranges. Each student’s characteristics are also considered. When possible, students with a specific learning disability are placed in groups with other LD students. The same occurs for our students dealing with ADD or AD/HD characteristics. Such grouping creates an optimum setting in which to maximize personal growth and development. Each team is limited to eight students with courses being comprised of two or three teams.

Physical and emotional well-being are of top priority to SOAR staff. These essential elements are planned into every program activity. Social, physical and emotional security are continual considerations.
