My forty five years at Holy Cross has been a reward­ ing experience. I have deep feelings and affection for our parishioners and friends who were affiliated with Holy Cross, resulting in a close relationship with one another and making us feel like a family. In the course of time, many parishioners relocated to different areas. However, they always found time to attend our church and its functions. The parish, through the years had the foresight to create a sinking fund in order to balance our financial needs. We are looking forward to our 70th Anniversary and will strive to improve a stronger path for our new gneration to come. And yet today the Armenian nation is affumed in the 60th anniversary of the Holy Cross Church of Annenia in New York City. In Merrwry Of Our Beloved Archbishop Tiran Nersoyan DADOUR AND SARA DADOURIAN ·' ARCHBISHOP TIRAN NERSOYAN Archbishop Tiran was born Nersess Tavookjian in Ainteb, Cilida on August 23, 1904, one of six children of Fr. Nersess and Yeretzgin Annitza Tavookjian. He attended preparatory school in Ainteb and was deported with his family to Syria in 1915. After a long period of hardship, which included Fr. Tavookjian's exile into the desert and the death of his baby daughter, the family returned to Ainteb after the Armistice of 1918. With Archbishop Elisha Tourian of Constantinople, elected Patriarch of Jerusalem in 1921, 17-year-<>ld Nersess Tavookjian left his birthplace before the withdrawal of the French military forces and entered the Seminary of the Armenian Patriarchate of jerusalem. The young seminarian's father had been a pupil of the great educator, Tourian, at the Seminary of Armash near Constantinople. Nersess Tavookjian was ordained a deacon in 1926 after having graduated from Seminary in 1924. He taught at the Armenian Elementary School run by the Patriarchate and did editorial work on Archbishop Ortnanian's Azgapatoon, whose third volume was posthumously being published under the direction of Bishop Papken Gulesarian, dean of the jerusalem Seminary. Nersess Tavookjian was ordained a celibate priest on July 22, 1928 by Patriarch Elisha Tourian, who named him Tiran Nersoyan.

The intellectual basis for this climate of opinion is that the world we know today, metaphysically, historical­ ly, scientifically, and socially, is one that does not admit to a secure and stable interpretation. Within such a climate of opinion one hesi­ tates to enumerate metaphysical truths about the universe; one doubts historical eschatology, except perhaps in a diabolical sense; one speaks scientifically in terms of probability and the statistics of randomness rather than absolute order; and one analyzes social problems in terms of specific values in specific situations rather than from an unchanging and absolute frame of reference. Indeed, it is because of a diminishing hope of achieving an absolute or even satisfying control over the world that many have come to live with contingency as a way of life, and have little reason to believe that their partially articulated values rever­ berate much beyond themselves. Through their fictional characters William Styron and Joseph Heller are contemporary observers of this climate of opinion. Styron reveals in his novels a vision of man separated from his familiar values and unable to return to them.

    A Brief History of the Armenian Studies Program at Fresno State 1960(1977)-2014 Prof. Barlow Der Mugrdechian Director, Armenian Studies Program Armenian Studies courses have been taught at Fresno State for fifty-two years. Dr. Richard Hovannisian of UCLA taught Armenian courses through extension in 1960- 1962. Dr. Louise Nalbandian of the History Department began teaching Armenian history at Fresno State in 1967, soon developing a broader program, including language and culture classes. Serpouhie Messerlian taught Armenian language courses beginning in 1970 and Dr. Arra Avakian taught a variety of Armenian culture and history courses from 1970- 1973. Upon Dr. Nalbandian’s untimely death in late 1974, the University pledged to open an international search to select a candidate to head a new Armenian Studies Program. After an unsuccessful initial search, a second search resulted in the hiring of Dr. Dickran Kouymjian (Columbia University), who at the time was teaching in Paris. He took up his duties in the spring semester of 1977, ending a two-year hiatus at Fresno State. Dr. Kouymjian was appointed as Director and charged to develop an Armenian Program of the highest standards. In the years since Dr. Kouymjian’s arrival the Armenian Studies Program developed an international reputation in terms of excellence in teaching, quality of scholarship, and active student and community outreach. In the variety and depth of courses offered, the Program quickly became the most dynamic undergraduate Armenian Studies Program in the United State (and perhaps anywhere), teaching hundreds of students each semester. The Armenian Studies Program has successfully integrated its courses in the general curriculum of the University.

Z díla tohoto autora slouží jako primární texty p ředevším povídky ze dvou knih, a to sbírky povídek Odvážný mladý muž na létající hrazd ě (The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze , 1935) a knihy Jmenuji se Aram (My Name Is Aram , 1940). První a druhá kapitola této práce se věnují obecnému ukotvení otázky etnik a jejich kultur v díle Williama Saroyana. T řetí kapitola pak analyzuje, jak jsou jednotliví členové etnických subkultur zobrazováni v povídkách, které jsou sou částí sbírky Odvážný mladý muž na létající hrazd ě. Čtvrtá kapitola se posléze v ěnuje otázce Saroyanova arménského p ůvodu a jeho zobrazení v Saroyanovì literatu ře, p ředevším ve sbírce Jmenuji se Aram.
