DOI: h t t ps :// doi.org/10.5334/jpl.268 RESEARCH PAPER How missionaries applied Portuguese and Latin descriptive categories in the classification and explanation of verb conjugations and paired verbs of Tamil Cristina Muru University of Tuscia, IT [email protected] Tamil verb stems may be inclusive of a voice morpheme that encodes the degree of agency of the verb. Hence, using Paramasivam’s (1979) terminology, these kinds of verbs are paired verbs of which one is the affective and the other its effective counterpart. In the former, the action expressed by the verb is realised by an agent and affects a patient, whereas in the latter the consequences of the action fall on the subject who realises the action. This paper intends to analyse how missionaries described the verb system of Tamil which differed substantially from their own model of reference (Latin and Portuguese), and how they understood paired verbs, as defined above. As such, taking into account the Western sources that missionaries used to compose and organise their descriptions, this paper focuses on both verb conjugations and paired verbs in Tamil. It also demonstrates how the Latin grammatical framework was applied for the description of Tamil verbs and discusses the Indian grammatical sources available to missionaries. Given that the present classification of Tamil verbs is based on the one offered by a missionary, Karl Friedrich Leberecht Graul (1814–1864), this study highlights how earlier missionaries’ descriptions contributed to the current classification. -

Patil Benjamin Luke Williams ABHINAVAGUPTA’S PORTRAIT OF GURU: REVELATION AND RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY IN KASHMIR ABSTRACT This dissertation aims to recover a model of religious authority that placed great importance upon individual gurus who were seen to be indispensable to the process of revelation. This person-centered style of religious authority is implicit in the teachings and identity of the scriptural sources of the Kulam!rga, a complex of traditions that developed out of more esoteric branches of tantric "aivism. For convenience sake, we name this model of religious authority a “Kaula idiom.” The Kaula idiom is contrasted with a highly influential notion of revelation as eternal and authorless, advanced by orthodox interpreters of the Veda, and other Indian traditions that invested the words of sages and seers with great authority. -

Karunakaran / Lost in Translation “Lost in Translation”: A Study of the History of Sri Lankan Literature Shamila Karunakaran Abstract This paper provides an overview of the history of Sri Lankan literature from the ancient texts of the precolonial era to the English translations of postcolonial literature in the modern era. Sri Lanka’s book history is a cultural record of texts that contains “cultural heritage and incorporates everything that has survived” (Chodorow, 2006); however, Tamil language works are written with specifc words, ideas, and concepts that are unique to Sri Lankan culture and are “lost in translation” when conveyed in English. Keywords book history, translation iJournal - Journal Vol. 4 No. 1, Fall 2018 22 Karunakaran / Lost in Translation INTRODUCTION The phrase “lost in translation” refers to when the translation of a word or phrase does not convey its true or complete meaning due to various factors. This is a common problem when translating non-Western texts for North American and British readership, especially those written in non-Roman scripts. Literature and texts are tangible symbols, containing signifed cultural meaning, and they represent varying aspects of an existing international ethnic, social, or linguistic culture or group. Chodorow (2006) likens it to a cultural record of sorts, which he defnes as an object that “contains cultural heritage and incorporates everything that has survived” (pg. 373). In particular, those written in South Asian indigenous languages such as Tamil, Sanskrit, Urdu, Sinhalese are written with specifc words, ideas, and concepts that are unique to specifc culture[s] and cannot be properly conveyed in English translations. -

A young worker at a brick factory near Chennai | brianindia/Alamy The DMK faces new challenges in expanding social justice alongside economic modernisation: internal fault lines have emerged in the form of cracks in the Dravidian coalition of lower castes and there are external ones such as reduced autonomy for states. As anticipated, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led alliance has come to power in Tamil Nadu after winning 159 out of the 234 seats in the state assembly. Many within the party had expected it to repeat its 2019 sweep in the Lok Sabha elections. The All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), despite having been in power for a decade and losing its long-time leader J. Jayalalithaa, managed to retain a good share of its vote base. The AIADMK government was often seen to compromise the interests of the state because of pressure from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with which it had allied. The DMK’s election campaign had, therefore, emphasised the loss of the state’s dignity and autonomy because of the AIADMK-BJP alliance and promised a return to the Page 1 www.TheIndiaForum.in June 4, 2021 Dravidian ethos that had earlier informed the state’s development. Apart from welfare, the DMK’s election manifesto emphasised reforms in governance of service delivery, and growth across sectors, agriculture in particular. The DMK’s victory has come at a time when Tamil Nadu is faced with a series of challenges. -

P T R Palanivel Thiagarajan is the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam MLA from the Madurai Central constituency. A former America-based merchant banker, he returned to Tamil Nadu to contest a seat his father P T R Palanivel Rajan had represented in the state assembly. His observations during the discussions on the budget in the assembly were acknowledged by then chief minister J Jayalalithaa. P T R Palanivel Thiagarajan draws the trajectory of Tamil Nadu politics after Jayalalithaa's death. It will be difficult for All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam members to find a common cause. They had a towering personality for a leader and filling that vacuum will not be possible. I don't see another leader taking her place in the near future. There is nobody of her stature. It is a generational shift and in her case the successor is not obvious. It is a inter generational transfer. It started with Perarignar Anna (the late Tamil Nadu CM C N Annadurai, founder of the DMK and the inspiration for the AIADMK) and then MGR (the late Tamil Nadu CM M G Ramachandran). With Anna, the politics was based on ideology which was different from the earlier Congress government in Tamil Nadu. During MGR's time, it was a big shift from ideology governance to a personality cult. With the DMK and the Congress, there was a marked difference in ideology. -

Pashupata cult Received: 10 June 2016 was established around 200 BC by Lakulisha. Born to a Brahmin family Revised: 10 July 2016 according to Karavana Mahatmya, he died in the seventh month and during Approved: 20 August 2016 his short span he displayed remarkable spiritual powers. His mother floated Published: 1 September 2016 his body in a river as per the tradition and as said a group of tortoise carried the body to a Shiva shrine. Lord entered his body and preached the Pashupata moral and ethics to the Shaivism; world. The place of his rebirth is today a town called Kayavarohana "to Lakulisha; incarnate in another's body". This miracle is still celebrated among the Kaurusha; Pashupata believers. The archeological department takes care of two stone Pashupata; inscriptions there with the names of Lakulisha’s four disciples- Kushika, Kayavarohana; Maitreya, Gargya, and Kaurusha. Lakulisha was a basically a dynamic Pashupata reformist. -

In an age where the state of the economy is driven more and more by knowledge and skill, it is clear that the future of our country will depend crucially on education at all levels – from elementary schools to research universities. It is equally clear that the question is not one of talent or innate abilities of our country men, as more and more Indians begin to win top jobs in US business and industry, government and academia. Indian talent is almost universally acknowledged, as demonstrated by the multiplying number of R&D centres being set up in India by an increasing number of multinational companies. So what is the real problem? There are many problems ranging from poor talent management to an inadequate teaching system in most schools and colleges where there is little effort to make contact with the real world in general rather than only prescribed text books. -

Quotes Basics Science History Social Other Search h o m e u n k n o w n h i n d u r e v i v a l i s t s c o n t e n t s Of the many nineteenth-century Indo-Western cultural confrontations, none was more troublesome than that of evangelical Christianity's challenge to indigenous religious beliefs and practices. The British conquest of most of the subcontinent had thrust aside the indigenous rulers and their pattern of rule, as well as an increasingly aggressive propagation of the Christian gospel by Western missionaries. The East India Company's initial policies toward Christian missionaries were at best ambivalent. Until pressure at home was created by the evangelical Christian interests, the British parliament eliminated these restrictions in the charter renewals of 1813 and 1833, opening British India to missionary endeavor. While some Britons admired the achievements of Indian civilization, others, including the evangelical Charles Grant, believed that India was a backward place, stagnated by Hindu beliefs and practices. If Britain was obligated to uplift India, then surely Hinduism, which Grant conceived as the ultimate source of India's many social evils, must be undermined. As early as the 1830's Christian representatives were visiting towns in the remote corners of the countryside. As these endeavors became more widespread, so too did popular antipathy and antagonism. It is generally accepted by most scholars on the subject that in many Asian countries political nationalism was preceded by religious awakenings that arose in response to Christian missionary activities.
