When Hull was established in 2003, it was founded on a strong partnership between the Universities of Hull and York, and the NHS. The aim was to draw on the strengths of those partners to deliver high-quality medical education, and produce outstanding doctors who would make a difference to the communities and patients they serve. Today that partnership is stronger than ever.

The annual student-led Teaching Excellence Awards have become a real highlight of the Medical School’s spring calendar, providing an opportunity to recognise the outstanding contribution of colleagues across the region to our Medicine and Physician Associate programmes.

This year we’re hosting the event online, in accordance with the latest Covid restrictions, and in light of the clinical commitments of many of our NHS-based colleagues. While we may not be able to celebrate together in person at the moment, I hope you’ll join us online throughout the coming week, as we celebrate with nominees and winners alike.

Our winners will be announced between 31 May and 4 June on our social media channels. Follow along on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram using the hashtag #HYMSAwards, or on our website at hyms.ac.uk/teaching- excellence-awards-2021.

I would like to extend my personal thanks to all of our tutors and support colleagues, and my congratulations to all those who have been nominated for an award. Best of luck!

PROFESSOR UNA MACLEOD Dean, Hull York Medical School

3 | hyms.ac.uk/teaching-excellence-awards-2021 | #HYMSAwards A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF OUR STUDENT STAFF COMMITTEE

As Chair of the Hull York Medical School Student Staff Committee, I am delighted to represent my fellow students in welcoming you to the Teaching Excellence Awards week.

The great thing about the annual Teaching Excellence Awards is that the categories, nominees and winners are all chosen by students. The Awards really are our opportunity to recognise those who have inspired us, supported us, and had a positive impact on our lives and education as medical students.

I have met some amazing staff in my time as a Hull York student, and it is an absolute pleasure to be able to say thank you, especially in a year where we have all faced such huge challenges. I know how hard you all work to make a positive impact on students’ lives, and for that I know everyone is hugely grateful. For now, it just remains for me to say best of luck to all of our nominees this year!

OLIVER SIMMONDS 4th year Medic and Chair, Hull York Medical School Student Staff Committee

As a School, we pride ourselves on delivering clinical placements in both primary and secondary care settings from the very beginning of our Medicine and Physician Associate programmes. We are delighted to recognise the achievements of the tutors and colleagues from across the region who make this possible.

5 | hyms.ac.uk/teaching-excellence-awards-2021 | #HYMSAwards THE AWARDS

The annual Teaching Excellence Awards are entirely student- led. Students from our undergraduate Medicine/Medicine With a Gateway Year and postgraduate Physician Associate Studies programmes are invited to nominate academic and clinical tutors and non-clinical support staff who have delivered exceptional medical education, and impacted positively on their experience. Winners are chosen by a committee of student representatives, based on both the quality and quantity of nominations. This year, we received an incredible 150 nominations!

Students also have the opportunity to nominate University- employed staff for and Teaching Awards, and we are delighted that many of our campus-based colleagues are nominated each year in recognition of their efforts.
