Methods

Measurements were takenfrom dried material,detergent-softened where possible. All taxa have been studiedin the field to record habit and habitatdata, as well asflower colour. voucher specimens have been Iodged at PERTH.

Stem tissueswere examinednicroscopically using preparedstained cross_sections. The number oflarge open vessels was comparedwith the number of thick-walled fibre tracheidspresent for each sample.

selected populations of Pericarymma, including thoseshowing the extremesof variation in the charactenbeingrecorded, wereinvestigated using Anarysis ofvariance (ANoVA), a statisticalmethod toestablish differencesbetween populations and within (species)populations. This study was based primarily on the analysisofthe meanlengths of the bracteoles, although others characterriwere tested (Cranfieldunpublished).

Material housedin PERTH was examined, incruding a photographof the type of pericarymma .floridum. The type material of elripticurnwas borrowed from w and a photographic record retained pericaLymma at PERTH. The type of cras. pes was located but not seen. and assumptionshave been made basedon the type description.

Localities recordedon all availableherbarium collections were used to producedistribution maps, but vague and general localities have not been mapped. The conseryationstatus of a speciesand infraspecific taxa has been assessedand coded where appropriate, according to the Departmentof Conservationand Land Management'sConservation Codes ior WesternAustralian Flora.

Morphology lllabll. AII speciesare shrubsless than 3 m tall. The original descriptionsindicatethat periccrlymmct ellipticun grows to 3 m. This study found that throughout the spicies range the maximum height attained was usuallyunder 2.5 m. Two speciesappear to attaina heightless than 0.45 m and have inflated gnarled erector stems. All specieshave dichotomousspreading branchlets with various leaf densitiesand clustering.

Srems. Severalspecies have inflated or swoilenstems with softbrittle tissue and are usuallv sinsle- stemmed. Onespecieshasnon-inllated stems with hardertissue that is structurallystronger. Thi-s is usually multi-sternmedat ground level.

Leaves. The leavesare simple and subsessile. The lamina is from l to 12 mm lons and is flat or conduplicate. The considerablerange of size anclshape of the larger leavesis depictedin Figurc 1. All leaves aredrawn at the samemagnification. The leafshapesare generally nanowly obovaie with the exception of one sample which has large obovate leaves and correspondsto the new species Pericalymmamegaphyllun. The midrib is obvious mainry in specimensthat representper iroiym*o ellipticum pericalymma andrs not vislblein crassipesarthough varying degreesofribbing can be secn in the other two sDecies. HabitaL Occruftingin Type 1 andType 2 habitatswith sandypeaty soils containing some lateritic gravel.

Floweringperiod. Octoberto January.

Conservationstatus. Widespread, not consideredrare or endangered.

Etymology.Named from theLatin spongiosus- porousand caale - stem, in referenceto the soft, swollenstems.

Noler. In bothofitshabitats Pericalymma spongiocaule overtops most associated species displaying its largerand showier flowers above the surounding . This suggests that this speciesis insect- pollinatedwith little selfingoccuning, possibly creating considerable genetic variation within and betweenpopulations.
