Spiritual Theology By JORDAN AUMANN, O.P. Preface The present volume was written in response to numerous requests for a complete and definitive work on Christian spirituality. It is not an entirely new work, however, for some sections are taken substantially from The Theology of Christian Perfection by Antonio Royo and Jordan Aumann, published in 1962 by Priory Press. Spiritual theology is both speculative and practical, but it is eminently practical because it deals with Christian life in relation to the perfection of charity. Consequently, the study of the theology of Christian perfection should proceed scientifically and systematically, although its aim is not to produce scholars but to form holy Christians. Therefore the first part of this volume investigates the theological principles of Christian holiness; the second part deduces from those principles the general directives by which souls can be guided in their journey to the goal of the Christian life. The theology contained in this volume is based on the spiritual doctrine of three Doctors of the Church: St. Thomas Aquinas, St. John of the Cross, and St. Teresa of Avila. Moreover, it is fully in accord with the teaching of John G. Arintero and Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange. A final word of thanks is due to Laura Gillet, John Osman, Michael Balaria, and Sister Veronica Marie. They were most generous in contributing their time and labor in the typing of the manuscript. Portier, Ph.D. In its analysis of mystical body of Christ theology in the twentieth century, this dissertation identifies three major streams of mystical body theology operative in the early part of the century: the Roman, the German-Romantic, and the French-Social- Liturgical. Delineating these three streams of mystical body theology sheds light on the diversity of scholarly positions concerning the heritage of mystical body theology, on its mid twentieth-century recession, as well as on Pope Pius XII’s 1943 encyclical, Mystici Corporis Christi, which enshrined “mystical body of Christ” in Catholic magisterial teaching. Further, it links the work of Virgil Michel and Louis-Marie Chauvet, two scholars remote from each other on several fronts, in the long, winding French stream. -

The theology of such a denomination is practiced organically by the people and is seldom articulated by the academy. Thus one cannot find a well articulated theological understanding of what ordination means for the individual and the community in the Baptist context. A synthesis of Geertz’s thick description, Lindbeck’s approach to doctrine, and McClendon’s understandings of speech-acts and conviction will offer a methodology through which one can articulate a theology of ordination. In doing so, we will find that the “call” and a relationship with a congregation are essential for ordination to occur. Such a theology will suggest that one is changed through ordination, and this change is relational in nature. The Catholic concept of Sacramental Consciousness offers a way to articulate the community’s awareness of the pastor’s relational change while at the same time maintaining the egalitarian nature of a Baptist community. -

It is not a little astonishing to me to that I have finished it. There has been the struggle to work through a complex subject matter, of course. But more than anything, there has been the struggle to find my voice, to feel out what kind of theological, philosophical, and spiritual music I am capable of and to wonder, often anxiously, whether it is worth playing. There are those in the academy who would have the dissertation be simply functional, one last requirement on the way to the desired goal, The Degree (followed by The Job and The Career). I have never been able to approach my writing in such a teleological fashion. I seem to be unable to approach writing otherwise than as a practice of what Foucault called “the care of the self.” Learning and putting into practice such self-care in this dissertation has been a difficult pleasure. Thankfully, Kierkegaard was an unfailing companion and guide in this task even as he was my subject matter. There are many along the way who supported me with care and made this dissertation possible. I’d like to name a few of them here. -

Open Theology 2019; 5: 299–308 Existential and Phenomenological Conceptions of the Relationship Between Philosophy and Theology Raul-Ovidiu Bodea* Nikolai Berdyaev’s Dialectics of Freedom: In Search for Spiritual Freedom https://doi.org/10.1515/opth-2019-0023 Received May 10, 2019; accepted June 21, 2019 Abstract: In Berdyaev’s notion of freedom the borders between theology and philosophy seem to fall down. The same existential concern for spiritual freedom is at the heart of both theology and philosophy. From the point of view of existential philosophy as Berdyaev understands it, only a theologically informed account of freedom, could do justice to the concept of freedom. But a freedom determined by God is not what Berdyaev had in mind as representing authentic freedom. It was necessary for him to reinterpret Jakob Boehme’s concept of Ungrund to arrive at a notion of uncreated freedom that both God and man share. But the articulation of this freedom, and an account of it within our fallen world could only be done as a philosophical pursuit. To arrive at the authentic understanding of spiritual freedom, that is theologically informed, Berdyaev believes that a philosophical rejection of erroneous views of freedom should take place. The articulation of the notion of freedom that does justice to the complexity of the existential situation of both God and man is not for Berdyaev a purpose in itself. The purpose is the arrival at a non-objectified knowledge of freedom that would inform a theologically committed existential attitude. Keywords: -

Athens Journal of History - Volume 3, Issue 3 – Pages 235-250 The Ancient History and the Female Christian Monasticism: Fundamentals and Perspectives By Paulo Augusto Tamanini This article aims to discuss about the rediscovery and reinterpretation of the Eastern Monasticism focusing on the Female gender, showing a magnificent area to be explored and that can foment, in a very positive way, a further understanding of the Church's face, carved by time, through the expansion and modes of organization of these groups of women. This article contains three main sessions: understanding the concept of monasticism, desert; a small narrative about the early ascetic/monastic life in the New Testament; Macrina and Mary of Egypt’s monastic life. Introduction The nomenclatures hide a path, and to understand the present questions on the female mystique of the earlier Christian era it is required to revisit the past again. The history of the Church, Philosophy and Theology in accordance to their methodological assumptions, concepts and objectives, give us specific contributions to the enrichment of this comprehensive knowledge, still opened to scientific research. If behind the terminologies there is a construct, a path, a trace was left in the production’s trajectory whereby knowledge could be reached and the interests of research cleared up. Once exposed to reasoning and academic curiosity it may provoke a lively discussion about such an important theme and incite an opening to an issue poorly argued in universities. In the modern regime of historicity, man and woman can now be analysed based on their subjectivities and in the place they belong in the world and not only by "the tests of reason", opening new ways to the researcher to understand them. -

Spirituality: a Resource for Theology
SPIRITUALITY: A RESOURCE FOR THEOLOGY Over the last ten years we have witnessed a renaissance—or an explosion—of interest in spirituality. It followed upon the ferment of the sixties, with the invasion of America by spiritual teachers from the Orient and the journeying of Americans to the East to find spiritual meaning. Closely allied to psychology, the interest in spirituality was buoyed along by the development of existential, humanistic and trans- personal psychology. For many, psychoanalysis led to the discovery of interiority, which launched them on a spiritual quest with a search for a spiritual path and a spiritual discipline. In the Catholic community by the end of the sixties the pendulum had swung from the flight into the world to a rediscovery of contemplation. After Vatican II had thrust Catholics into the world and had effected radical changes in external forms of religious life, many felt the need to ground themselves in- teriorly by rediscovering their own spiritual traditions, assimilating the findings of psychology and opening to the wisdom of the East. Among the earliest signs of the reawakening of spirituality for Catholics were houses of prayer that mushroomed in the late sixties— with religious and lay members spending long periods of time cultivating the practice of prayer. The retreat movement itself was renewed by the return to the original Ignatian formula of the directed retreat, with emphasis on individual discernment and spiritual direction. The most dramatic development in Catholic spirituality was the charismatic movement, encompassing large numbers and flourishing in diverse groups throughout the country. As interest in spirituality spread, there sprang up throughout the country workshops, institutes and programs in prayer, spiritual direc- tion and contemporary spirituality. -

The Book of Mystical Chapters The Esoteric Spiritual Doctrine of the Early Christian Monks and Ascetical Teachers of the East Translated & Introduced by John Anthony McGuckin 1 The Book of Mystical Chapters The Esoteric Spiritual Doctrine of the Early Christian Monks and Ascetical Teachers of the East Introduction The early Christian monks formed an international society that flourished in all the Greek territories of the late Roman empire, as well as in Syria and Persia, in Egypt gathered around the Nile and as far into Africa as Nubia ( modern Sudan) and the highlands of Ethiopia. They inhabited the rocky and desert terrain of Sinai, Palestine, Arabia, and Cappadocian Turkey; and in the great capital of the late Roman Empire, Const- antinople, they became almost a civil service, so great were their numbers, with many dedicated scholars and aristocrats among them. After the fifth century the monastic phenomenon became descriptive of Western Christianity too, where Gaul (ancient France) and Italy became centres of Latin monasticism. Everywhere in the ancient Christian world that the four major languages, Greek, Latin, Syriac or Coptic, were spoken, Christian monks could be found living in solitary isolation near villages, in small communes of hermits gathered together in remote valleys, or in small houses, usually of a few dozen living the communal life together. These three forms of monastic lifestyle in the Early Church had become standard by the fourth century of the common era, and after Constantine had begun the transformation of the Roman State into the Christian Empire of Byzantium, the monastic movement flourished for more than a thousand years more with the patronage of Christian emperors. -

79 THE SANCTITY AND GLORY OF THE MOTHER OF GOD: ORTHODOX APPROACHES By KALLISTOS OF DIOKLEIA OVE AND VENERATION for the Virgin, the russian theologian Fr Sergei Bulgakov (1871-1944), states: is the soul of orthodox piety, its heart, that which warms and L animates its entire body. A faith in Christ which does not include the virgin birth and the veneration of his Mother is another faith, another Christianity, from that of the Orthodox Church. His words are typical, and they indicate the unique place held in orthodox devotion by her whom we like to describe in our prayers as 'the joy of all creation'. How has this living heart of our piety, the life-giving source of our hope and joy, been understood in orthodox thinking, greek and russian, during the past sixty years? Scarcely ever in the history of Eastern Christendom has the Blessed Virgin Mary been the subject of controversy. There is in the East nothing comparable to the elaborate discussions in the medieval West about the Immaculate Conception, or to the catholic-protestant debate from the sixteenth century onwards about the whole position of the Virgin in christian theology and devotion. The main eastern controversy involving our Lady -- the fifth-century conflict between Nestorius and St Cyril of Alexandria over the title Theotokos -- was concerned not so much with the person of Mary as with the doctrine of the Incarnation. The name of the Holy Virgin is constantly on our lips, her face is always before us in the holy icons, she is everywhere present like the air we breathe ~ to use the analogy of Gerard Manley Hopkins- she is honoured, revered, loved, but not the subject of critical analysis. -

ABSTRACT The Revival of Political Hesychasm in Greek Orthodox Thought: A Study of the Hesychast Basis of the Thought of John S. Romanides and Christos Yannaras Daniel Paul Payne, B.A., M.Div. Mentor: Derek H. Davis, Ph.D. In the 1940s Russian émigré theologians rediscovered the ascetic-theology of St. Gregory Palamas. Palamas’s theology became the basis for an articulation of an Orthodox theological identity apart from Roman Catholic and Protestant influences. In particular the “Neo-Patristic Synthesis” of Fr. Georges Florovsky and the appropriation of Palamas’s theology by Vladimir Lossky set the course for future Orthodox theology in the twentieth century. Their thought had a direct influence upon the thought of Greek theologians John S. Romanides and Christos Yannaras in the late twentieth century. Each of these theologians formulated a political theology using the ascetic-theology of Palamas combined with the Roman identity of the Greek Orthodox people. Both of these thinkers called for a return to the ecclesial-communal life of the late Byzantine period as an alternative to the secular vision of the modern West. The resulting paradigm developed by their thought has led to the formation of what has been called the “Neo- Orthodox Movement.” Essentially, what the intellectual and populist thinkers of the movement have expressed in their writings is “political hesychasm.” Romanides and Yannaras desire to establish an Orthodox identity that separates the Roman aspect from the Hellenic element of Greek identity. The Roman identity of the Greek people is the Orthodox Christian element removed from the pagan Hellenism, which, as they argue, the Western powers imposed on the Greek people in the establishment of the modern nation-state of Greece in 1821.
