  • Cobbling Together the Dream Indian Eleven
COBBLING TOGETHER THE DREAM INDIAN ELEVEN Whenever the five selectors, often dubbed as the five wise men with the onerous responsibility of cobbling together the best players comprising India’s test cricket team, sit together to pick the team they feel the heat of the country’s collective gaze resting on them. Choosing India’s cricket team is one of the most difficult tasks as the final squad is subjected to intense scrutiny by anybody and everybody. Generally the point veers round to questions such as why batsman A was not picked or bowler B was dropped from the team. That also makes it a very pleasurable hobby for followers of the game who have their own views as to who should make the final 15 or 16 when the team is preparing to leave our shores on an away visit or gearing up to face an opposition on a tour of our country. Arm chair critics apart, sports writers find it an enjoyable professional duty when they sit down to select their own team as newspapers speculate on the composition of the squad pointing out why somebody should be in the team at the expense of another. The reports generally appear on the sports pages on the morning of the team selection. This has been a hobby with this writer for over four decades now and once the team is announced, you are either vindicated or amused. And when the player, who was not in your frame goes on to play a stellar role for the country, you inwardly congratulate the selectors for their foresight and knowledge.

  • When Swami Blessed Sachin A.Prasanna Kumar “Life Is a Game
When Swami blessed Sachin A.Prasanna Kumar “Life is a game, play it, a simple yet complicated game, a complicated yet simple game,” famously said Sri Sathya Sai Baba in a message. The message itself is simple yet profound. When Sunil Gavaskar and Alvin Kallicharan, two ardent devotees of Sri Sathya Sai Baba, requested him to host an international cricket match, Swami was pleased to consider it favourably and he graciously chose the game of cricket to spread the message of unity and oneness. Things began to happen with rapid speed. EAS Prasanna came up with plans to transform the Sathya Sai Hill View Stadium in Puttaparthi into a first class venue. On December 30, 1997 a One Day International Cricket match for Sri Sathya Sai Unity Cup was hosted between India XI led by Sachin Tendulkar and International XI led by 1996 World Cup Champion side’s Captain Arjuna Ranatunga. The Unity Cup match, the first of its kind to be held anywhere, became a mega sporting event with the presence and participation of top cricketers, past and present, from almost all leading cricket playing countries. Thanks to ACA Secretary N.Venkata Rao I was also privileged to go there to witness the unique event. The previous evening Venkata Rao and I went to the ground where former India fast bowler G.Kasturirangan, along with Kallicharan, was supervising the ground preparations as per the advice of EAS Prasanna. As the few of us were chatting away a limousine slid into the stadium. Lo behold! Bhgawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba came out of the car and behind him walked with folded hands Sunil Gavaskar, Arjuna Ranatunga and Sachin Tendulkar.

  • Education and Sports
Chapter X EDUCATION AND SPORTS Ancient educational institutions in the form of agraharas, Shivapuris, brahmapuris, ghatikasthanas and mathas existed in the State following traditional methods of teaching. Mathas were residential schools where the teacher and the taught lived together. Agraharas and brahmapuris were settlements of scholars and separate arrangements existed there to teach the three R’s. Ghatikasthanas were meant for conferring degrees or certifying scholarships. Rich families engaged teachers to teach their children privately. There also grew institutions like Koolimatha, Salimatha or Odisuvamatha where a teacher ran a school either in his house or in a public place like a temple or a choultry and was paid in cash or kind during the harvesting season. Reading, writing and arithmetic were taught and much of the learning was through memorising or repeating the sentences or verses collectively. The cane played a major role in disciplining mischievous pupils including those who were slow of learning. Vocational learning was mostly hereditary. A boy who was to pursue the career of an accountant or a government servant was sent to a shop or government office after he mastered the three R’s. He was to be a probationer for long years. Government servants initiated their own young wards into their offices and were later absorbed into service. Administrative service was also hereditary before the advent of the British and for long even after. The offices of a Shanbhag (village accountant) is a case to remind the old practice. The

  • Why Does One Not 'Walk'?
Aum Sri Sai Ram Why does one not ‘walk’? Virendra Sehwag slashes hard and Taufiq Umar spills the offering at the slips. Mistake : By the Fielder. Beneficiary: Batsman. Sachin Tendulkar caught bat-pad but appeal turned down. Mistake: By the Umpire. Beneficiary: Batsman. These two seemingly different scenarios have more similarities and lessons than what meet our eyes. A moment’s reflection on the above two instances perhaps will have more than mere academic value, for as it so often happens in sports as in life, it is one’s reactions to the happenings on the field that characterize him / her more accurately than even the wealth of knowledge, and possibly talent too, that one is supposed to possess on the game itself. Firstly, in both the cases it is the batsmen who stand to gain. Secondly, it is the fielding team that is left with heartburns as a result. Perhaps the only difference in the above two scenarios is that the fault lies on different ends. Why then do we not complain in the first case, but take a moral high ground, in the latter, and condemn the beneficiary? What is so special in the second case that catapults us on to a pedestal and hands us a judge’s gavel to brand the beneficiary? How is it that we condemn the person who committed the mistake in the former but overlook, or sometimes even sympathize with, the person who had not lived up to his professional commitment, in the latter? In fact, in the latter case we readily denounce the beneficiary.

  • Dr. Gokaraju Gangaraju Book
It gives me immense pleasure to inform that Dr. Gokaraju Gangaraju has done exemplary service to Andhra Cricket Association. I know Dr. Gangaraju and his father and both of them are people of noble heart. They are always keen to serve the society. Recently I inaugurated the picturesque twin grounds at Mulapadu in Krishna District. I also inaugurated the first- ever historical Test match at Visakhapatnam. After taking a look at the grounds and other infrastructure in different districts of A.P, I am thrilled by the dedicated efforts put in by Dr. Gangaraju and his team. I requested Dr. Gangaraju to give a proposal for developing adventure sports on the hillocks of Mulapadu and other sports infrastructure across the State. Top officials of BCCI, recognising his services made him the Vice President of BCCI. I would like to appreciate Dr. Gangaraju, his team of office bearers and members of ACA, who stood by him in all his endeavours in moulding ACA as a role model association in the country. 1 1 I take it as honour to inform that Andhra Cricket Association, under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Gokaraju Gangaraju, has made tremendous progress in terms of development of game and infrastructure across the state of AP. I have been watching Dr. Gangaraju in BCCI meetings. He comes to the meetings with one agenda - to seek facilities to ACA, demand postings for ACA members in sub committees of BCCI and more number of international matches for the association. He always sought the coveted Test status to Dr. Y.S.R.
