“The State of the VAA”

It’s hard to believe that 2017 is well under way. The VAA started off 2017 with the annual convention in Short Pump, VA. We had an outstanding attendance and I trust those who attended enjoyed the fellowship, education and events that were provided. At our convention, I saw a lot of members embracing new ideas to take their auction businesses to the next level. The auction industry is rapidly changing and I believe as we all work together our association will continue to move forward and provide excel- lent educational opportunities and support for our members.

The VAA officers and committee members are already hard at work planning the events for this year. Our President-Elect, Brian Damewood, is in the process of gath- ering speakers for our Spring Conference, Mid-Year Conference and the 2018 Con- vention. The 2017 Committees are posted and if you are serving as a Committee KellyIke SwartStrauss Chair, please be sure to make contact with your committee members. Also, it’s never Leesburg, VA too early to begin thinking of nominations for our annual awards. Please contact Je- King George, VA rome Clark, Awards Committee Chair or a member of the Awards Committee if you have any questions regarding award guidelines or would like to make a nomination.

We need to continually expand our membership. If you know of a Virginia auctioneer who is not a member of the VAA, please share your personal experiences with them and refer them to the VAA website or contact Tony Wilson, the Membership Committee Chair.

The opinions, questions, concerns and thoughts of all VAA members are a priority to me. Please feel free to contact me by phone at 703/401-7085 or by email at [email protected].

The Virginia Auctioneer/Spring 2017 Page 7 Come Get a Bargain?

“Some awesome bargains … name your price … we have no bids yet, so bid now … we’re practically giving things away … heavy discounts … almost free … pennies on the dollar” and the list goes on, and I cringe every time I see such so-called auction marketing.

Let’s start with this premise: Auction marketing is distinctly different than other marketing. Retail operations need buyers and when they get some, they order or manufacture more product to sell. Auctioneers need buyers and when they get some and sell property, they need more sellers.

To describe this difference, I met with some potential clients at a house/barn the other day filled with personal property — 5 cars, guns, coins, jewelry, tools, and much more. The sellers (the two daughters) had interviewed one other auctioneer before I arrived to meet with them.

After looking around at the inventory, I sat down with them, where they disclosed that were ready to sign with the “other” auctioneer. Noticing his business card on the cocktail table, I asked if I could show them an ad he had recently placed on Fa- cebook?

I asked these two women if they were looking for someone to “give their parents’ stuff away — sell it all at steep discounts — and/or provide all the buyers big bargains?” Their reply was, “Of course not!” They were now ready to sign our con- tract.

Auction marketing is almost as much about getting buyers there for the current auction as it is finding sellers for the next auc- tion. Auction marketing needs to suggest — imply the possibility of discounts (the prospect of a deal) but not expressly say so, as to not drive away future sellers.

We regularly discuss at (The Auction School) that auctioneers during the auction shouldn’t be announcing “Wow! What a deal you just got!” nor “You stole that” or the like. We then pose the question, “Would a seller in attendance go home and tell their spouse, ‘Boy, that’s the auction we should take our stuff — they were giving things away!'” Probably not.

Auctioneers are advised to either get up-to-speed on this subtle but material part of auction marketing or hurry and find someone more schooled to place their advertising — unless, of course, an auctioneer wants their last auction to possibly be?

Focusing on retaining membership numbers was first priority and trying to gain new members was a close second priority. The overall number of members grew in 2016 which met our goal. I encouraged each board member to recruit new members and hope you all had some success in doing so. I encourage everyone to keep this as a goal every year to keep our association growing. In order to mentor our new members, there will be a 1st timer’s welcome at our 2017 winter convention and more time to follow up with those new members during the fun’d auction/dinner hours. The following goals have been set forth for the three year projection.

The Town Hall allows you to find regulations and track proposed changes, as well as to submit on-line comments about regulatory changes. This will keep you informed of the actions of the Auctioneers Board.

(2) The General Assembly Citizen Legislative Tracking Service at (http://www.virginia.gov/liab/citizen.htm). In partner- ship with the General Assembly's Division of Legislative Automated Systems, DLAS, the Virginia.gov, is offering a free legislative tracking service. The new service allows users to track up to five bills in their profile. The new legislative track- ing service is based on the popular Lobbyist-In-A-Box service which has been widely used by professional lobbyists and public entities for several years.

(3) The General Assembly Legislative Information System (LIS) (http://leg1.state.va.us/lis.htm). Users will find a wide array of legislative information contained at this site. Included is general information about the legislative process and its participants as well as the full text, summaries, status history of bills and resolutions and schedules of activity. Full text searching is also available for the Code of Virginia, Virginia Administrative Code, Rules of the Supreme Court, Bills and Resolutions, and House and Senate Documents. Several legislative agencies provide information about their organizations and topics of interest related to their function.
